## Yuil Jangeo, a domestic eel specialist on Donggok-ro in Gwangsan-gu

Yuil Jangeo is an eel restaurant at 343 Donggok-ro, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, right across from Songjeong Outlet. Live eel runs ₩29,000 per kg, and they say they only use domestic native eel.

The heat just won't let up these days. So I went out for eel under the excuse of restoring my energy, haha. I'd wanted eel for a long time, but the price always made me hesitate. Then a friend recommended this Gwangsan-gu eel spot, Yuil Jangeo! Hearing they only use domestic native eel, I trusted them and rushed over.

## How big is the hall, and what are the day-of-the-week rooms like?

The main hall at Yuil Jangeo was way bigger than I expected. Down both sides of a hallway, rooms named Monday through Sunday are lined up in a row.

> An enormously spacious hall

Tables stretched out across the wide-open hall, and there were quite a lot of customers, so the place felt lively.

The interior exceeded my expectations too. A modern feel, an accent brick wall, small pieces of art scattered around — pretty stylish for an eel restaurant.

Further in, both sides of the hallway are lined with rooms named Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. 'Wait, is this for real?' — there were that many rooms, haha. Perfect for family gatherings or group visits, I thought.

## How ordering works at Yuil Jangeo: pick your eel first, then sit

At Yuil Jangeo, you pick your eel at the seafood counter and pay first, then sit down. The pre-searing is done in the kitchen and brought to the table, and after that you grill it yourself over charcoal.

Make sure to read the sign at the entrance before you go in.

![Self-serve bar where diners bring their own side dishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-dongok-eel-room-preorder-counter/gwangju-dongok-eel-room-preorder-counter-08-g07lb-966.webp)

Side dishes are also self-serve from a bar. (For reference, the eel itself is VAT-exempt, but the table setting charge is billed separately.)

## How did the pre-seared eel taste on the charcoal grill?

The pre-seared eel arrived on the charcoal, and the self-serve side dishes had quite a variety — green onion kimchi, salad, all kinds of sauces. They said they only use domestic Japonica eel, and sure enough it was clean and savory with no fishy taste.

Once I sat down, the basic side dishes were already set out, so I ran to the self-serve bar and loaded up. Green onion kimchi, salad, all kinds of sauces — the variety was great.

You could tell right away the charcoal was good quality. There's even a separate spot on the side for setting down the fully cooked eel — such a nice touch!

My eyes went wide the moment the pre-seared eel landed on the table. Plump, springy eel spread out across the charcoal — such a good visual. Nice color, generous size — I basically ate it with my eyes first, haha.

Watching it turn golden brown as you flip it around was fun even while waiting. It's great dipped in soy sauce, and wrapped in a perilla leaf with green onion shreds it's a whole different treat. They said only domestic Japonica eel — and it really did taste clean and savory with zero fishiness.

![A piece of eel topped with onion strips and ssamjang](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-dongok-eel-room-preorder-counter/gwangju-dongok-eel-room-preorder-counter-11-eytcj-966.webp)

I topped the eel with just onion strips and ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste) to taste the eel's own flavor as much as possible... and it was seriously so good!

## Eel soup to round out the meal

After eating a fair amount of grilled eel, I also ordered Yuil Jangeo's eel soup. It comes bubbling in an earthenware pot, with a savory broth.

It wasn't spicy, just clean-tasting — perfect for polishing off a bowl of rice in no time. If I'd only had the grilled eel it might have felt a bit lacking, but with the soup added, the whole meal felt complete and hearty.

## Self-serve coffee after eating

![Two self-serve coffee machines near the entrance](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-dongok-eel-room-preorder-counter/gwangju-dongok-eel-room-preorder-counter-12-1iovt-966.webp)

On the way out, I noticed there were two self-serve coffee machines. Americano, espresso, sweet coffee options too — a good number of choices for a light cup after the meal. Nice — that kind of detail, haha.

## Final verdict: would I go back to Yuil Jangeo?

₩29,000 per kg of live eel is quite reasonable for an eel specialist. Knowing it's domestic Japonica eel adds to the trust, and with private rooms available, it's a solid choice for bringing your parents or a family meal out.

If you've usually felt eel prices are a bit much, or you want to properly try a good eel restaurant in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, I'd recommend visiting at least once. Would I go back? Of course, haha.
