Filling Donkatsu Gwangju Cheomdan Direct Store is a katsu restaurant on the 2nd floor of the IBC Knowledge Industry Center in Buk-gu, Gwangju, chosen as Gwangju's representative pick on the 'Great Donkatsu Map.' Have any of you heard of the Great Donkatsu Map? If you love katsu and have eaten your fair share, you might know it.

I thought I'd eaten around enough, but I'd never heard of it before haha. The 'Great Donkatsu Map' is a list of 100 top katsu restaurants across Korea, compiled by a self-described katsu obsessive. I went to check out Filling Donkatsu Cheomdan, the pick for Gwangju.

## Inside Filling Donkatsu Cheomdan and the Naver-booked table

Filling Donkatsu, this Gwangju Cheomdan katsu spot, sits on the 2nd floor of the IBC Knowledge Industry Center building in Buk-gu, Gwangju. Sitting by the window means enjoying your meal with a city view outside, and there's also a private room space that can seat up to 10.

I visited during lunchtime, and the restaurant was already full, with people waiting too. Still, since I'd made a Naver Reservation three days earlier, I had a table waiting for me :)

Filling Donkatsu takes its katsu seriously — the menu ranges across katsu, cutlets, pasta, pilaf and risotto, with plenty of variety. Low-temperature tenderloin katsu is the signature dish, but since my kid loves sweet potato and cheese so much... we ordered the sweet potato king cheese katsu solo set (+cola) and the mushroom cream pasta.

## The self-serve bar: Korean napa cabbage kimchi, refilled twice

Before the main dishes arrived, there was a self-serve bar set up prominently to one side of the restaurant. Basic salad, diced radish kimchi, napa cabbage kimchi (kimchi), pickles, danmuji (pickled radish), and even soup and toast. The taste I still remember is the domestic napa cabbage kimchi — I'll admit I was skeptical when I saw 'domestic cabbage' on the label, but it really lived up to it. Delicious, freshly-made kimchi. I refilled it twice, haha. Highly, highly recommend.

My kid went for two whole slices of pre-meal toast... and loaded them up with strawberry jam. As for me, soup is a must — you have to have soup before katsu, right?

## Mushroom cream pasta

The moment it was served, the smell alone told you how thick and rich the cream flavor would be.

The visual, packed with button mushrooms, and the springy bounce of the ricacconi pasta was just a bonus. The cream sauce made it all look even richer.

This is the kind of dish where you can't help but spear two pieces at once with your fork — that good.

## Sweet potato king cheese katsu solo set

I'd already been surprised by the pasta's visuals, but that was nothing compared to this. A bright yellow sweet potato mousse piped on top of the katsu — so cute, and how did they pipe it so perfectly? Haha, skilled hands. Distracted by the mousse, I only noticed the thickness of the katsu afterward. I think this might be the thickest katsu I've seen even before it's cut. Genuinely thick, but the sauce drizzled over it hid it well. The rice, salad, and corn salad were completely out of sight underneath... lol. But not-so-secretly, I finished it all.

I cut into it once, and it sliced smoothly — thin, crispy coating, juicy meat, with cheese oozing out. It was a bit much even for an adult, so I cut it into thirds. My kid just kept saying the sweet potato was so delicious, haha, and got full after just a few bites.

Right about when the mushroom pasta and sweet potato cheese katsu started to feel a bit heavy, there was the kimchi. Worth saying again — the kimchi is another standout dish at Filling Donkatsu, so make sure to have plenty.

## Free dessert: ice cream and iced coffee to go

On the way out, everyone seemed to grab either ice cream or coffee. I figured it had to be good, so I went for the iced coffee. What was genuinely thoughtful was that they give you a store-bought-style ice cup, the kind you'd buy at a convenience store, included for free... the owner is really something.

And it turned out to be a great coffee too — personally I like a clean taste without acidity, and this was exactly my style.

From the self-serve bar before the meal, to the main dishes, to dessert — a Gwangju Cheomdan restaurant where you can eat until you're stuffed. Turns out the kimchi and the coffee are just as much of a draw here too.
