## In short

Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu is a Chodang sundubu (soft tofu stew) Korean restaurant on Nanseolheon-ro in Gangneung, Gangwon. Still remembering the sundubu hot pot broth from a visit years earlier, the writer booked through Naver Reservation and came back for a late breakfast, ordering the Chodang Myeongpum table for two at 25,000 won per person plus bossam (boiled pork) for 31,000 won and gajami sikhae (fermented flounder) for 6,000 won. Served with the dadaegi (chili paste) left out for the children, the white broth at Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu tasted exactly as remembered.

I couldn't forget the broth of the sundubu jeongol (soft tofu hot pot) I had a few years ago on a trip to Gangneung, so this time I made a point of coming back to Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu. Even after all this time, that deep broth flavor kept popping into my head. It's such a popular Gangneung sundubu restaurant that I booked ahead this time. If you're looking for a long-loved local favorite in Gangneung or a reliable local recommendation, this place is worth keeping in mind.

## Booking Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu on Naver, and the waiting area

Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu takes Naver reservations with a ₩20,000 deposit. Last time I came during peak hours and remember a huge crowd waiting, so this time I booked ahead. There's a deposit, but you walk straight in without waiting — much more convenient if you're visiting with kids like we were.

Of course, there's also a separate waiting area set up for walk-in customers.

Since it had been a while, I noticed a new arcade machine in the waiting area — one of those games where you try to stop the timer at exactly 0.89 seconds. Coming back after a few years, it was fun spotting these little changes.

## Meals from 8am: arriving for a late Gangneung breakfast

Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu starts serving meals from 8am, so we came a little early for brunch.

Thanks to that, we started our meal in a relatively relaxed atmosphere, but by the time we finished and left, the place was already full.

*Group seating also available*

Definitely lives up to its reputation as a popular Gangneung sundubu restaurant.

## Chodang Myeongpum table for two, plus a 31,000 won bossam

This time we ordered the Chodang Myeongpum table at ₩25,000 per person for two, and added bossam (boiled pork) for ₩31,000. The kids love bossam so much it's practically a required order for our family.

![Handmade tofu and a plate of added bossam](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangneung-sundubu-return-visit-broth/gangneung-sundubu-return-visit-broth-08-conjl-966.webp)

Handmade tofu and bossam came out first, and the extra order really showed — the portion of bossam was generous. It was tender, not dry at all, and the kids ate it up happily.

It's not just a sundubu-only spot — you get to enjoy a whole spread of dishes at once, which should suit anyone who likes the vibe of a Gangneung local favorite restaurant.

The side dishes came out in quite a variety, too.

### Is gajami sikhae worth the 6,000 won add-on?

Among them, the one I kept reaching for was the gajami sikhae (fermented flounder), and I ended up ordering more of it for ₩6,000. When even a small side dish like this is delicious, it sticks in your memory even longer as a Gangneung local recommendation.

![Grilled kodari with rich sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangneung-sundubu-return-visit-broth/gangneung-sundubu-return-visit-broth-12-yis7b-966.webp)

### Why the Myeongpum table wins: the grilled kodari (half-dried pollock)

One reason I want to recommend the Myeongpum table is the grilled kodari (dried pollock). The sauce is deeply colored, and it's packed with umami when you taste it. The kodari itself was meaty with plenty to eat, and the rich sauce went perfectly with rice.

I came for sundubu and ended up falling for the kodari — it was that much of a standout dish. If you want to try several menu items at once, order the Myeongpum table at Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu. It's a great fit for anyone visiting this Gangneung sundubu restaurant who wants a generous full spread rather than a single dish.

## How the sundubu hot pot broth tastes without dadaegi

And finally, the sundubu jeongol (soft tofu hot pot) I'd been remembering for years arrived. It's loaded with soft, cloudy tofu and simmers right at the table.

I appreciated that, seeing we had kids with us, they prepared it without dadaegi (chili paste). That way the kids could eat first, and then we could add more spice to taste. This kind of small consideration matters a surprising amount when you're looking for a family-friendly Gangneung local favorite.

But honestly, the broth itself was already delicious before adding any dadaegi. This is exactly the broth that made me think, years ago, that I had to come back to Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu. It has a deep, rich umami that's nothing like an artificial seasoning taste, and it was still exactly the flavor I remembered.

Sundubu can sometimes carry an off soybean smell or a slightly fishy edge, but here there was none of that — it blended perfectly with the broth. Looking inside, you could see shrimp and other seafood, and the deep flavor seemed to come from all those ingredients simmering together. That's probably why this place kept coming to mind whenever I talked about Gangneung sundubu restaurants.

Taking a big spoonful of the soft, cloudy tofu with the broth warmed me right through. Gangneung has so many sundubu restaurants, but this is the one that stuck firmly enough in our family's memory that we came back.

## Was Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu worth returning to?

Coming back after several years and finding the broth exactly as I remembered made this visit to Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu all the more welcome. The biggest strength here is that it's not a one-and-done place — it's a Gangneung sundubu restaurant you keep thinking about long after.

Since they serve meals from early morning, it works well as the first stop on a Gangneung trip, or as a hearty brunch. It can get busy at peak hours, so if you want to enjoy this popular local spot without the wait, I'd recommend reserving ahead or coming early like we did.

A satisfying meal of rich sundubu jeongol, bossam, and grilled kodari all in one sitting. I came back because of a memory from years ago, and I was satisfied again this time — so a third visit is definitely on the cards. For anyone craving that deep broth flavor and a hearty Korean meal, Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu is a Gangneung local favorite I'd happily recommend.
