## In short

Sokcho Topgol Makguksu Main Branch is a Korean noodle restaurant in Sokcho, Gangwon, a one-minute walk from the Sokcho Beach public parking lot, specializing in perilla oil buckwheat makguksu (deulmemak). Ordering deulmemak at 13,000 won alongside plain buckwheat makguksu at 10,000 won made it easy to compare the nutty, mild bowl against the seasoned one, and a solo portion of suyuk (boiled pork) at 17,000 won plus buckwheat king mandu at 10,000 won turned it into a filling meal. Deulmemak suits anyone who likes nutty flavors, while buckwheat makguksu is the better pick for a more classic bowl.

Traveling around Sokcho, I was looking for something clean and easy to eat, so I went to Topgol Makguksu Main Branch. There are so many good makguksu (buckwheat noodle) restaurants in Sokcho that it was hard to decide where to go, but I ended up at Sokcho Topgol Makguksu Main Branch, which is known as something of a mecca for deulmemak.

After parking at the Sokcho public parking lot, it's just a one-minute walk, so the location is great, and they give you a 2-hour parking discount voucher, perfect for looking around Sokcho Beach after your meal.

## What we ordered: two bowls of makguksu, suyuk and king mandu

We ordered deulmemak (perilla oil buckwheat makguksu), buckwheat makguksu, solo-portion suyuk, and buckwheat king mandu. Rather than sticking to just one style of makguksu, we wanted to compare two different styles, and adding suyuk and mandu seemed like it would make for a solid meal.

- Deulmemak ₩13,000
- Buckwheat makguksu ₩10,000

Seeing so many celebrity autographs all over the restaurant, it must really be known as a Sokcho makguksu hotspot. Even Hibab has been here haha

## What does perilla oil buckwheat makguksu taste like?

![A bowl of perilla oil buckwheat makguksu](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-topgol-makguksu-two-bowls-compare/sokcho-topgol-makguksu-two-bowls-compare-08-1t2yx-1200.webp)

Here comes the perilla oil buckwheat makguksu-! ₩13,000. Apparently this restaurant's perilla oil buckwheat makguksu is the first in Korea to get a trademark registration from the Korean Intellectual Property Office.

I drizzled a few extra rounds of perilla oil on it haha. Makguksu made with perilla oil is a dish where you enjoy the flavor of the buckwheat noodles themselves and their nutty aroma rather than a punchy sauce, which is something I usually like anyway — the noodles had that distinctive nutty perilla oil fragrance, and from the first bite it tasted both plain and nutty.

I mixed it thoroughly without adding any other seasoning at first, and when a bit of noodles was left, adding a splash of dongchimi (radish water kimchi) broth made it even more delicious.

## Deulmemak vs plain buckwheat makguksu: the taste difference

![Buckwheat makguksu topped with seasoning](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-topgol-makguksu-two-bowls-compare/sokcho-topgol-makguksu-two-bowls-compare-10-3hqml-900.webp)

Buckwheat makguksu, ₩10,000. If the perilla oil buckwheat makguksu is on the nutty, plain side, the buckwheat makguksu lets you taste something closer to a more typical makguksu flavor, so having both together made for a fun comparison. Since the two dishes go in different flavor directions, I felt it was a good call to order both.

![Buckwheat makguksu mixed with mustard, vinegar, and fruit dongchimi](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-topgol-makguksu-two-bowls-compare/sokcho-topgol-makguksu-two-bowls-compare-11-eda7d-900.webp)

I drizzled on some perilla oil and mixed in mustard, vinegar, and fruit dongchimi to try it. If you like makguksu with a bit more punchy seasoning, this is exactly the flavor you'll love. If you like nutty, plain flavors, deulmemak suits you better; if you want a more typical makguksu, the buckwheat makguksu seemed like the better fit.

## Single-portion suyuk and buckwheat king mandu

![A plate of solo-portion suyuk](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-topgol-makguksu-two-bowls-compare/sokcho-topgol-makguksu-two-bowls-compare-12-hwndj-900.webp)

Solo-portion suyuk (boiled pork), ₩17,000. Makguksu alone can feel a bit light, but ordering suyuk alongside made the meal much more filling. Suyuk in particular pairs so well with makguksu that it seems like something people just naturally order together at makguksu restaurants.

![Picking up a piece of suyuk with chopsticks](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-topgol-makguksu-two-bowls-compare/sokcho-topgol-makguksu-two-bowls-compare-13-1tpoa-900.webp)

![Suyuk served together with buckwheat makguksu](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-topgol-makguksu-two-bowls-compare/sokcho-topgol-makguksu-two-bowls-compare-14-17tat-900.webp)

Eating a piece of suyuk together with the buckwheat makguksu, the different flavors and textures worked well together, and I liked the combination.

![A plate of buckwheat king mandu](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-topgol-makguksu-two-bowls-compare/sokcho-topgol-makguksu-two-bowls-compare-15-1gwn3-900.webp)

Buckwheat king mandu (dumplings), ₩10,000. It would feel incomplete without ordering king mandu too, so we got some. When makguksu alone feels a bit lacking but you don't want to order too many dishes, adding buckwheat king mandu as a side seems like a good option.

If you're craving makguksu while traveling in Sokcho, or looking for a good Sokcho restaurant or a good Sokcho makguksu restaurant, Topgol Makguksu Main Branch is worth a visit. Personally, the nutty, plain flavor of the perilla oil buckwheat makguksu left the biggest impression on me 👍🏻
