## In short

Usijang Hoegwan is a charcoal-grilled beef restaurant on Samgae-ro in Mapo-gu, Seoul, near Mapo Station. Three diners, including a child, shared the 3-person set of jingalbisal, seasoned LA galbi and galbisal, served with yukhoe (raw beef) and clam beef soup, for a total in the low 100,000 won range. Usijang Hoegwan, a spot near Mapo Station, and their beef assortment 3-person set. Three of us ate a full beef spread for low ₩100,000s.

I went out for dinner near Mapo Station with my kid. We were debating what to eat and landed on beef for the first time in a while. Since it was three of us, I wanted a menu where we could taste a bit of everything rather than just ordering plain meat, and the 3-person set at Usijang Hoegwan looked perfect. Three cuts — jingalbisal, seasoned LA galbi, galbisal — plus yukhoe (raw beef) and clam beef soup. And after all that, it came to just low ₩100,000s.

I figured a beef dinner for three would run up a bill, but once we started eating, the portions and the variety felt pretty generous. And with a kid along, having several different menus instead of just one repeated cut was much better.

## Jingalbisal: the first cut on the charcoal at Usijang Hoegwan

The first thing we put on the charcoal from the 3-person set was jingalbisal. As soon as it hit the hot coals it sizzled and the surface started cooking fast — that's the moment beef excitement really kicks in.

Jingalbisal had just the right amount of savory fat marbled through it, which suited charcoal grilling really well. I browned the outside, dipped a piece lightly in salt, and got a rush of savory meat flavor up front followed by softness. It wasn't a cut you had to chew forever, so it was great for the kid too. My kid usually refuses meat if it's even a little chewy, but when I cut the well-cooked jingalbisal into small pieces, she ate it better than I expected. Grilling meat at a BBQ place with a kid is always a bit stressful, but this was easy — just cook it to the right point and cut it up right away. And charcoal grilling gave it a subtle smoky note you just can't get from a pan at home, making the meat itself taste richer.

## Galbisal, richer the longer you chew

The second cut we grilled was galbisal. After eating our fill of jingalbisal, we put galbisal on next. Both are rib cuts so you'd think they'd be similar, but the texture is actually a bit different once you taste them. Jingalbisal leans soft and savory, while galbisal has a stronger beefy flavor and springier texture the more you chew.

I like dipping meat like this in just a bit of salt, but I also enjoy switching up condiments partway through, so I tried a few things. A tiny dab of wasabi cut through the richness, and pairing it with crisp vegetables gave a different feel again. Especially with the savory char from the charcoal-grilled meat plus something cool and crisp alongside, I kept reaching for more. Jingalbisal was fun for its softness, galbisal for its chew. And for the kid, I kept cutting off the softer parts.

## Seasoned LA galbi, the cut our child ate the most

Of the three cuts, the one that really changed the mood was the seasoned LA galbi. After the two plain cuts, once the seasoned LA galbi hit the grill, a sweetish seasoning smell rose up and the whole table's vibe shifted.

Seasoned meat can burn quickly, so I kept flipping it. The sweet aroma of the seasoning slightly caramelizing on the charcoal was really nice, and the browned parts were a bit chewy while the inside stayed soft. Most of all, the seasoned LA galbi was the dish my kid liked best. Guess kids really do love this kind of slightly sweet seasoned meat, haha. I cut the meat off the bone into bite-size pieces and she ate it well with rice.

As an adult, tasting the meat's own flavor in cuts like jingalbisal or galbisal is great, but having the seasoned LA galbi in the mix shook things up and made the meal more fun. Plain raw cuts → chewy galbisal → sweet seasoned LA galbi. Eating the three in that order, it felt like different dishes even though it was all beef.

## Yukhoe (raw beef), a break from grilled meat

The 3-person set at Usijang Hoegwan also comes with yukhoe (raw beef). I tasted it in between the three grilled cuts, and being a completely different texture from the charcoal-grilled meat, having a bite here and there changed my palate again. I preferred yukhoe that wasn't too heavily seasoned, letting the savory flavor of the meat itself come through.

A bite of grilled meat, then a bite of yukhoe. Then back to putting more meat on the charcoal. Eating this way, the meal stretched out longer than expected, and there was fun in tasting each menu one by one.

## Clam beef soup, clean to the last spoonful

We finished with clam beef soup. Honestly, after eating that much meat we were pretty full already, but once the soup arrived, our spoons kept moving anyway. 😂 You'd expect a soup at a beef restaurant to be rich and heavy, but the clams gave the broth a refreshing, clean edge.

After all that meat, the warm broth felt like it reset the rich, savory taste lingering in our mouths. A spoonful of broth, a little rice mixed in — that's when the meal finally felt complete. There were beef pieces and clams in it too, so it was a different experience from just drinking plain broth. I especially felt this kind of soup pairs well after eating beef.

![Rice mixed into the soup](https://img.superchart.com/images/mapo-usijang-beef-3-set-family/mapo-usijang-beef-3-set-family-13-5sfc0-m-900.webp)

Rather than meat after meat after meat, finishing with warm broth and rice made my stomach feel much more comfortable. My kid also had a little rice with the broth.

## Is the low 100,000 won range worth it for three?

Our total bill for three at Usijang Hoegwan that day came to the low ₩100,000s. After the meal, what I liked most was really the composition.

- Jingalbisal
- Seasoned LA galbi
- Galbisal
- Yukhoe
- Clam beef soup

It wasn't just beef — the yukhoe changed up the texture, and the soup at the end took care of the rice too. And the total came to just low ₩100,000s.

Given how expensive eating out has gotten these days, tasting this much variety of beef for three felt pretty good. It's an especially nice setup with a kid — give the child the well-grilled beef and seasoned LA galbi, let the adults enjoy jingalbisal, galbisal and yukhoe, and finish with soup everyone can share. It was also nice that we didn't need to order a separate kids' menu — there was something for the whole family on one table.

I went looking for somewhere to have dinner with my kid near Mapo Station, and this really turned into a night where we went out for beef and ended up properly trying a bit of everything.

From the soft, savory jingalbisal to the more beefy galbisal, the seasoned LA galbi our kid loved most, the yukhoe we had here and there, and the clam beef soup that wrapped things up cleanly — being able to enjoy beef this many ways for three people at low ₩100,000s was the most satisfying part of our day at Usijang Hoegwan.

If you're looking for a family dinner spot near Mapo Station with kids, a meal like this — grilled meat, raw beef, and soup all in one — beats just ordering meat and calling it done. On a day when we were craving beef near Mapo Station, we left this one pretty full and pretty happy. 😊
