## In short

Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu is a makguksu (cold buckwheat noodle) and buckwheat kalguksu restaurant on Hoguk-ro, just outside the main Wondang shopping streets in Deogyang-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi. The order here was bibim makguksu (spicy mixed buckwheat noodles), memil-buchimgae (buckwheat pancake) and perilla buckwheat kalguksu, with the mixed noodles rolled up inside the thin buckwheat pancake and a pre-meal plate of mini barley rice and yeolmu kimchi. Mild rather than fiery, Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu is a filling meal that still leaves you feeling light.

## What kind of restaurant is Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu?

Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu is a makguksu (buckwheat noodle) and buckwheat kalguksu restaurant on Hoguk-ro in Deogyang-gu, Goyang, just a bit off the center of Wondang's downtown. Even so, it's a hidden gem that keeps drawing customers by word of mouth.

Today I want to introduce a hidden gem that's a little off the main downtown strip, yet still packed with customers thanks to word of mouth. It's Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu, a place with a clean, tidy savoriness that leaves you feeling really comfortable after eating.

Even though it's set in a quiet spot slightly away from the city center, the place fills up with customers during meal times. It has that kind of charm that turns first-time visitors into regulars.

## Self-serve water and buckwheat tea by the kettle

At Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu, water is self-service, so you just grab cold water from the fridge yourself. Right next to the fridge, warm buckwheat tea is set up and ready.

Usually at places with a self-serve corner, you have to walk back and forth with your cup multiple times, which can be a hassle — but here, they thoughtfully provide a kettle! You can fill it up with buckwheat tea and carry it to your table, so you can enjoy warm, nutty tea comfortably before and after your meal. Starting the meal with a warm cup of tea on a cold day put me in a great mood right from the start~

## Mini barley rice and yeolmu kimchi before the noodles arrive

The basic side dishes vary depending on what you order. On my visit, I got cool, crisp yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi). The well-fermented yeolmu kimchi had such a clean broth that I kept reaching for more.

Before the main dish arrives, once you've placed your order, they bring out a mini-sized bowl of barley rice along with the yeolmu kimchi.

I drizzled the seasoning sauce they gave me over the rice, added a drop of sesame oil, and mixed it all up. The nutty aroma of sesame oil, the sweet-spicy sauce, and the crunchy yeolmu came together perfectly, instantly reviving my appetite. It felt like the perfect little pre-meal appetizer to cleanse the palate.

## The three dishes ordered at Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu

The main menu items I ordered at Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu were bibim makguksu, buckwheat pancake, and perilla buckwheat kalguksu. Let me introduce each one properly.

### How to wrap bibim makguksu in a buckwheat pancake

The first thing that arrived, the buckwheat pancake (memil-jeon), came as two thin, golden-brown pancakes stacked together. The distinct clean, mild flavor and softness of buckwheat came through nicely, and it was delicious even just dipped plain in the seasoned soy sauce.

Here's a tip for eating it even more deliciously: take the well-mixed bibim makguksu and roll it up in this thin buckwheat pancake, then eat it in one bite! The combination of spicy makguksu and nutty pancake is a real delicacy among delicacies.

### Bibim makguksu, the signature dish

Second up was the signature dish that basically every table was ordering without fail — bibim makguksu. I understood why everyone was eating it the moment I took my first bite.

The seasoning sauce wasn't overly sharp or spicy; instead it was cool, sweet, and spicy in perfect balance, blending beautifully with the buckwheat noodles. It's great on its own, but pairing it with the cool yeolmu kimchi that comes as a side dish adds a crunchy texture that makes it even more delicious.

### Perilla buckwheat kalguksu and its thicker noodles

The last dish was perilla buckwheat kalguksu. I honestly ordered it without much expectation, and was surprised at how good it turned out to be. The moment I took a spoonful of the broth, my mouth filled with the rich, nutty flavor of perilla — the savory depth was truly outstanding.

The noodles in the perilla buckwheat kalguksu are a bit thicker than regular kalguksu noodles, so the texture might not be for everyone, but personally I enjoyed the chewiness, and the rich perilla broth soaked into the noodles really well. If you love a nutty, savory broth, I highly, highly, highly recommend trying this.

## Who is this Wondang noodle restaurant best for?

Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu is a great place to visit with elders or parents. Looking around after finishing my meal, I noticed most of the other customers skewed toward an older age group. You all know the rule — a place that older folks flock to is a real hidden gem, right?!!?!?!

This isn't a place that masks flavor with harsh seasoning — it draws out the clean, natural savoriness of the ingredients themselves, making it a flavor that people of all ages and genders can enjoy without complaint!!!!! What I loved most was that even after eating a full meal, my stomach felt completely comfortable, not heavy at all.

It was such a satisfying meal that I already want to bring my parents here next time they visit, or the next time we have a family dinner out. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a clean, deeply flavorful meal that leaves you feeling comfortable afterward!
