## A Uijeongbu bakery by the Gyeonggi North Provincial Office, found by smell

Byway Bakers Cheongsa Main Branch is a bakery on the first floor of the Gyeongnam Building, right across from the Gyeonggi Provincial Government North Branch Office in Uijeongbu. I was walking through this area for an errand, and a bakery was genuinely not on my agenda that day. Not even a little. I was walking toward my destination, and I'd already done the math that buying a snack midway would mess with dinner.

But whatever plans a person makes turn out to be pretty flimsy in front of the smell of baking bread.

While walking, the distinct smell of butter and freshly baked bread hit me all at once. At first I just kept going. I'm not sure exactly how many more steps I took, but I ended up turning back. At this point, my nose found it before I did — my body just followed.

That's how I ended up walking into Byway Bakers Cheongsa Main Branch.

Since it's right across from the Gyeonggi Provincial Government North Branch Office, it's a good stop if you have business in this area anyway.

Walking into the store, the source of that outdoor smell appeared all at once, right in front of me.

It's a bakery built around financiers, egg tarts, and salt bread, but it's not just the familiar stuff lined up in a row. Mixed in among the basics are combinations that make you look twice.

This is where the trouble starts.

I had clearly decided I was just browsing.

Deciding to "just browse" in a bakery is a lot like deciding to "just buy water" at a convenience store. Technically possible, but it takes serious willpower. I circled the display case once with my hands clasped behind my back. At that point I'd basically issued myself a no-buying order.

But the Wakppu salt bread shook me the first time, and the fig pistachio tart shook me the second time. By the time I saw the mocha salt bread, I couldn't keep up the "just browsing" pretense anymore.

I don't want to go on at length here about how each item was. What stuck with me most after looking around Byway Bakers Cheongsa Main Branch was the overall lineup.

The fig pistachio tart I picked also makes its ingredient combination clear right from the name. It's the kind of lineup where you come in to buy something familiar and end up picking up something you wouldn't normally choose.

## Verdict: almost walking past Byway Bakers was the real mistake

Looking back, my biggest mistake that day was trying to just walk past in the first place.
