Gave up on protein shakes because they taste bad? Cleanit Protein Cacao.

Today, I brought a product I’d like to introduce to anyone who carefully checks ingredients when choosing a protein shake because they’re worried about skin breakouts. It’s Cleanit Protein Cacao, made with plant-based protein.

Having tried it myself, I’ll go through the taste and texture, and whether it’s convenient enough to drink regularly.

## Why I started looking for plant protein instead of whey

When I was working out in the past, I made sure to consume lots of protein, but my skin broke out so badly that I stopped taking it for a while. I thought, “Surely it was just a coincidence,” so I started again—but, as if it had been waiting, the breakouts came back. After experiencing that several times, I wondered, “Am I just not supposed to have protein...?” and eventually gave up.

But I couldn’t exactly avoid protein altogether while exercising, so I started looking into whether there might have been an issue with the protein I’d been drinking.

It turns out there are several types of protein. I learned that whey protein, which was what I’d been having, could be related to skin breakouts. There can be many causes of breakouts, but for some people, whey protein may be one of them.

Some components in milk protein can cause allergic or inflammatory reactions depending on the person, and apparently some people simply do not tolerate whey protein well for that reason. Considering that my skin broke out every time I had protein... I think whey protein may have been a particularly bad fit for me.

So this time, instead of the protein I had been drinking, I switched to the plant-based Cleanit Protein Cacao. Since it was my first time trying it, I carefully checked the ingredients and nutrition information first.

## How to mix it with water or soy milk

Now that we’ve looked at the ingredients and nutrition information, let’s see how to actually drink it. The directions were simpler than I expected: add 40 g of powder to 170 ml of water or 200 ml of soy milk and mix well. It says to have it once or twice a day.

I first tried it mixed with water, then with soy milk. Even with the same product, the taste and consistency felt a little different depending on what I mixed it with.

When I tried it with water first, I used an electric shaker bottle. A family member has been totally into the gym lately and bought all kinds of workout gear, so I’ve been putting it to very good use, haha. I also sorted through several scoops that were lying around the house, and just from what you can see here, I think there are four or five.

Of course, you don’t need the dedicated scoop. You can measure it perfectly well with a spoon from home; to get 40 g, use about six spoonfuls.

## Taste and texture mixed with water

When I poured it into a glass, it gave off a subtle cocoa aroma. I mixed it with cold water, and it blended better than I expected. Even without shaking it for long, it mixed evenly throughout with no clumps.

Mixed with water, it felt a little mild rather than intensely chocolatey. Still, it had almost none of the chalky or lingering mouthfeel typical of protein shakes, and the finish was clean, so it went down easily. If you expect something very sweet and rich, you may find it disappointing, but if you’re looking for a protein shake to drink every day, I think this clean flavor might actually be better.

## Is it more filling mixed with soy milk?

This time, I tried it with soy milk. The taste was definitely richer and smoother than it was with water. The soy milk also made it feel a little more filling, so I thought it would be nice as a snack when I’m peckish. Personally, I think water is good when I just want some light protein, while soy milk is better when I want something more substantial.

I mixed a glass for my family member with creatine added, and they’re already eyeing it up. At this rate, it looks like it’ll all be gone before I even get to drink it. There are 13 servings, so I think it will disappear faster than expected—I should probably stock up before it’s all gone.

It hasn’t been easy for me to keep up with protein, but now that I can simply mix and drink it like this, I think I’ll be able to meet my daily protein intake a little more comfortably. If you’ve been looking for plant protein instead of whey protein like I was, Cleanit Protein Cacao may be worth a look. In particular, if getting protein every time feels like a hassle, or very rich, chalky protein shakes feel too heavy, I think it would be worth trying at least once!
