## In short

Ssuk's Choco Pie Seoul is a handmade choco pie dessert shop near Gwangjang Market in Jongno, Seoul. I sampled mugwort, strawberry, and peanut flavors, then shared the generously cream-filled pies at home. Verdict: a fun stop for a less predictable Chuseok gift.

I spotted this very green storefront while looking around Gwangjang Market and popped into Ssuk's Choco Pie Seoul (쑥스초코파이 서울). Gwangjang Market has so much food that I went in thinking only of things like bindaetteok (mung bean pancakes) and yukhoe (Korean beef tartare), but there was even a place selling handmade choco pies! If you are looking for a Gwangjang Market dessert or a slightly unusual snack in Seoul, it is worth a look.

## Where is Ssuk's Choco Pie Seoul?

Ssuk's Choco Pie Seoul is by Gwangjang Market's South Gate 1. It is at 25 Jongno 32-gil in Jongno-gu, Seoul, and also fairly close to Exit 7 of Jongno 5-ga Station, so it was easy enough to stop by while exploring the market. It is tucked into a market alley, but the whole shop is green, so it stands out more than I expected. At first I thought, Is it a café? But up close, it turned out to be a choco pie specialty shop. Haha.

It is seriously green right from the entrance. Even from outside, the color really pops among the other shops, so it was hard to walk past. The inside is more compact than I expected, but it was plenty big enough for looking at and buying choco pies. It felt more like a shop where you choose dessert and take it away than a café where you sit for a long time! There were also characters right by the entrance, so there were quite a few photo spots.

The shop was full of green packaging and character props, too. Personally, places with such a clear brand color tend to photograph beautifully. We could not just walk past either, so we took a photo in front of the mirror. Lol. The mirror shape was cute too, making it a nice spot for a quick photo on a Gwangjang Market date.

## Choco pie flavors named for regional ingredients

While looking around, I learned that Ssuk's Choco Pie has been a handmade dessert specialist since 2016. Its flagship store is in Gwangju, and apparently you can also find it at Gwangju 1913 Songjeong Station Market. So the products are not simply called chocolate or strawberry; there were many flavors with regional names, such as Geomundo sea-breeze mugwort, sea-breeze mugwort injeolmi (roasted soybean rice cake), Gwangju real chocolate, Udo peanut, and Nonsan strawberry. Looking through them one by one was more fun than I expected.

One nice thing was that I did not have to choose choco pies just by looking at them—I could sample them too. When we visited, we got to taste a little of a mugwort choco pie. It was a combination I had never seen before, so I honestly could not picture the flavor, but one bite gave me a much better sense of it and made choosing much easier.

## Ssuk's Choco Pie menu and prices

The display case had quite a wide range of choco pies. I had imagined choco pies as little more than cream between chocolate cakes, but these had varied ingredient combinations such as mugwort, red bean, injeolmi, strawberry, and peanut. The actual products on display were fairly large compared with how they looked in photos, so even one seemed enough for dessert. Prices varied a little by flavor, but based on the menu I photographed, they were generally in the ₩4,000 range.

## Gift sets with choco pies, scones, and cookies

You can buy individual items, but there were gift sets prepared separately too. At the time I took the photos, the 3-piece gift set was listed as ₩14,400 → ₩13,400, and the 6-piece set as ₩28,800 → ₩24,800. You could choose the items you wanted from choco pies, scones, and cookies, which seemed quite convenient for a gift.

## Trying the strawberry and Udo peanut choco pies at home

Once home, I tried them one at a time!! When I cut a choco pie in half, it had much more cream than it looked like in the photos. The Nonsan strawberry had white cream between chocolate cake layers, with strawberry filling in the middle. The strawberry-jam-like part was concentrated on one side, so the strawberry flavor varied a little depending on where you bit. With so much cream, it definitely felt closer to cake than a standard packaged choco pie. It is coated in chocolate too, so it is on the sweet side. Personally, I liked it chilled because the cream stayed firm and tasted a little cleaner.

The Udo peanut was easy to tell apart at a glance. Peanuts were dotted on top, and there were peanuts in the cream inside as well. When I cut it in half, there were more peanuts inside than I expected. If you prefer nutty flavors over the bright tang of strawberry, this one will probably suit you better.

## The mugwort choco pie I was curious about

Because of the name Ssuk's Choco Pie, the mugwort flavor was naturally the one I was most curious about. You can see the green cake layer in the middle even from the outside, making it clearly different from the other choco pies. Rather than tasting intensely of mugwort all the way through, it had a mugwort aroma between the chocolate and cream, so it is worth choosing if you normally like things such as mugwort rice cakes.

## Overall thoughts

I cut into a chocolate flavor too, and the cross-section showed that the cake layers themselves were quite thick. With cream inside and chocolate added as well, it felt less like a light snack you finish in one or two bites, like a supermarket choco pie, and more like eating a small cake. For me, cutting one in half and eating about half at a time was just right. Especially if you buy several flavors, I think cutting them up and sharing them with family or companions would be even better for comparing the tastes.

There were distinctive combinations such as mugwort, injeolmi, and whole red bean, along with more familiar flavors such as strawberry, Udo peanut, and real chocolate, so it was easy to choose to your taste. The choco pies I tried were generally filled with a generous layer of cream, which made them feel more like small cakes than typical choco pies. When cut in half, they were especially full inside, so even one was more filling than I expected!! I think they would suit anyone looking for a slightly different dessert gift this Chuseok rather than something overly predictable. You can build a gift set from choco pies, scones, and cookies, so it did not feel too burdensome to pick up a small gift!
