## In short

Hyangtaek Daebong Branch is a Korean rice-and-side-dish restaurant near Kim Kwang-seok Street in Daebong-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu. Over a weekend lunch the writer ordered samchi gondrebap (grilled mackerel with gondre herb rice, 14,000 won), yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef rice bowl, 14,000 won) and a side of hanpan mushrooms (6,000 won), and the mackerel flaked off the bone easily. Lines can form at mealtimes, so booking ahead through the Tabling app is the easy way in, and Hyangtaek covers 1 hour 10 minutes of free parking at the Kim Kwang-seok Street public lot.

Today's little adventure with Bboku took us to Hyangtaek Daebong Branch in Daebong-dong! We've been trying all kinds of menus together lately, and this time I wanted something clean and hearty — good old Korean food. What struck me while eating was how many older guests were there. Once I tried the food myself, I understood why: dishes like samchi gondrebap (mackerel and gondre rice) and yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef rice bowl) are exactly the kind of thing you'd bring your parents to enjoy. Next time I might bring mine along too, haha. It's close to both Kim Kwang-seok Street and Gyeongbuk Uni Hospital Station, so if you're looking for a good restaurant near Kim Kwang-seok Street, keep this one in mind!

## Is there a wait? Tabling bookings and parking at Hyangtaek

When we visited for weekend lunch, there were already waiting guests. Mealtimes especially can bring a wait, so I'd recommend booking ahead through Tabling. Whether you're coming on a date like us, or bringing your parents for a meal, reserving in advance makes things a lot easier by cutting down the wait 😊

🚗 No dedicated parking lot / Kim Kwang-seok Street public parking available. You can use the Kim Kwang-seok Street public parking lot, and if you mention it when paying after your meal, they'll cover 1 hour 10 minutes of free parking!

Following the alley, the big Hyangtaek sign was easy to spot, so finding the restaurant wasn't hard at all. The clean exterior with its full glass front let you see a bit of the inside from outside, and there was a signboard by the entrance showing the signature menu. Being close to Kim Kwang-seok Street, it's a great stop after sightseeing there, and also a solid option if you're looking for somewhere to eat near Gyeongbuk Uni Hospital Station.

## Inside Hyangtaek Daebong Branch: mood and seating

Stepping inside, the wooden tables and chairs made for a comfortable overall dining atmosphere. There were tables for two and four, as well as seats for larger groups, and an open kitchen visible toward the back. When we visited, there were plenty of lunch guests, including some on dates, but especially a lot of older guests! Having tried the food myself, the menu lineup really does suit a hearty meal with your parents. So if you're looking for a restaurant near Gyeongbuk Uni Hospital Station to bring your parents, or somewhere good for a family meal, Hyangtaek Daebong Branch could be a good fit 😊

## The best order to eat your meal at Hyangtaek

![Card on the table showing how to enjoy Hyangtaek's food](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-daebong-tableling-parking/hyangtaek-daebong-tableling-parking-07-1w1yn-646.webp)

There was a card on the table titled 'How to Enjoy Hyangtaek Deliciously.' You can just mix it however you like, but since the eating order was written out, we followed along too, haha. First, mix the toppings on the rice evenly to taste the natural flavors, then add the gopchang-gim (seasoned laver) and bibim-jeotgal (mixed seasoned seafood) to eat together. Finally, add the special sauce a little at a time for a different flavor. The card noted that pouring in all the sauce at once can make it too strong — so the trick is adding it gradually to suit your taste. Being able to enjoy a single dish differently at each stage was fun, so it's worth reading before you dig in.

## What comes with the meal: the basic table setting

![Basic table setting with gopchang-gim and bibim-jeotgal](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-daebong-tableling-parking/hyangtaek-daebong-tableling-parking-08-acm4k-900.webp)

After ordering, along with the main dish they brought out the basic side dishes to go with it. A warm soup, gopchang-gim, gungchae jangajji (pickled aster stem), bibim-jeotgal, and sauce all came out together. In particular, the gopchang-gim and bibim-jeotgal paired really well with the main dish when eaten the way Hyangtaek suggested.

It was nice having so many different Korean dishes to choose from!

- Samchi gondrebap ₩14,000
- Yukhoe bibimbap ₩14,000
- Hanpan mushrooms ₩6,000

## Samchi gondrebap (mackerel with gondre rice), 14,000 won

![Samchi gondrebap topped with mackerel at Hyangtaek Daebong Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-daebong-tableling-parking/hyangtaek-daebong-tableling-parking-09-hkt7k-900.webp)

![A bite of samchi gondrebap wrapped in gopchang-gim](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-daebong-tableling-parking/hyangtaek-daebong-tableling-parking-10-ajhvc-1200.webp)

First up, one of Hyangtaek's signature dishes — samchi gondrebap! A big chunk of mackerel arrived generously piled on the bowl along with gondre (dried aster greens), sesame, and green onion. And the moment I tasted the mackerel... it was so incredibly tender!! The meat came apart smoothly and stayed moist, pairing perfectly with the gondre rice. First I followed the suggested method and tasted the ingredients on their own, then wrapped it in gopchang-gim with a touch of bibim-jeotgal. It was nice being able to enjoy the same dish in slightly different ways depending on how you paired it, haha. With the generous mackerel and the gondre rice together, it made for a hearty meal. If you're visiting with parents who like fish or gondre rice, I'd definitely recommend this dish 👍

## Yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef rice bowl), 14,000 won

![Yukhoe bibimbap with raw beef centered over vegetables](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-daebong-tableling-parking/hyangtaek-daebong-tableling-parking-11-1gxhz-900.webp)

![Yukhoe bibimbap mixed with egg yolk and gochujang](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-daebong-tableling-parking/hyangtaek-daebong-tableling-parking-12-1ako3-900.webp)

A generous serving of fresh-looking vegetables came out with the yukhoe (raw beef) mounded in a neat circle in the center. I dropped the separate egg yolk on top of the yukhoe, added gochujang (red chili paste), and mixed it all together — so good! The crisp vegetables with the yukhoe and yolk added a rich, savory flavor, and with the gochujang mixed in, it became exactly the yukhoe bibimbap flavor I love lol. It had a different appeal from the samchi gondrebap, so I was glad Bboku and I each ordered one to share. If you're at Bangcheon Market looking for somewhere to eat and prefer yukhoe over fish, this bibimbap is a great choice.

## Hanpan mushrooms, 6,000 won

![Hyangtaek's hanpan mushrooms grilled golden brown](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-daebong-tableling-parking/hyangtaek-daebong-tableling-parking-13-1tcem-900.webp)

And the hanpan mushrooms we ordered to go alongside the mains! This is the dish I really want to highlight lol. If you like mushrooms, you have to order this!! It comes out grilled golden brown across the whole plate, with even the edges nicely charred — it looked delicious just to look at. One bite and I could really taste that chewy, moist texture unique to mushrooms, plus the crisp texture from the browned parts, so good. Great on its own, and even better dipped in the accompanying sauce! It was also easy to pick at a piece here and there while eating the main dishes, pairing nicely with both the samchi gondrebap and the yukhoe bibimbap. Personally this dish stuck with me just as much as the mains, so if you like mushrooms, hanpan mushrooms are a must!

## Is Hyangtaek Daebong Branch worth a visit?

This visit to Hyangtaek Daebong Branch with Bboku! The samchi gondrebap had truly tender mackerel, and the yukhoe bibimbap was delicious mixed with the egg yolk and gochujang. As mushroom lovers, the hanpan mushrooms were a total win for us too! With so many older guests there in person, it's a great place to bring your parents for a meal, and being close to Kim Kwang-seok Street, it also worked well for our date 😊 Since there can be a wait at mealtimes, I'd recommend booking ahead through Tabling. If you're looking for a restaurant near Kim Kwang-seok Street to bring your parents, or a hearty Korean meal for a date, Hyangtaek Daebong Branch is worth a visit. We enjoyed our meal a lot! Good stuff 👍
