Today's hearty everyday adventure: I went with Ppoku to eat a solid Korean meal at Cafe Dong-i Sicheol!

If you just hear the name you might think, is this a café? Haha, but it's actually a Korean restaurant serving all kinds of Korean set meals.

The menu has a lot of variety and the prices aren't intimidating, but once I actually ate the food, the portions were generous too, so it turned out to be a great value Sicheol restaurant for a single meal.

There are set meals for kids all the way up to various Korean set meals for adults, so it seemed like a comfortable spot for families with kids as well as adults, no matter your age or gender.

## Finding the entrance and the waiting-line hutgae tea

When you arrive at Cafe Dong-i Sicheol, the first thing you notice is the 'Cafe Dong-i' sign on the corner of the building. On your first visit you might get a little confused, thinking the side with the sign is the entrance, but the actual entrance is right next to it, with a brick exterior! There's a Cafe Dong-i label at the entrance too, so if you look around a bit it's not hard to find 😊

In front of the entrance there was also a waiting registration kiosk and separate chairs to sit and wait. During busy meal times, it seems like you register here and wait.

What really caught my eye was the cool hutgae tea (raisin tree tea) set out in front of the entrance! It's prepared so that waiting customers can drink it freely. It's a small gesture for guests waiting outside on a hot day, and it made me feel the owner's thoughtfulness, haha.

## Store atmosphere and menu lineup

The inside of Cafe Dong-i Sicheol felt clean and well kept overall. The restaurant isn't huge, but there's a good number of tables and the seating is comfortable enough for a relaxed meal!

It was comfortable for the two of us, Ppoku and me, and looking at the menu, it seemed good for everything from solo dining to couples to family outings.

![Korean menu board at Cafe Dong-i Sicheol](https://img.superchart.com/images/shinmae-station-lunch-grill-jeyuk/shinmae-station-lunch-grill-jeyuk-08-5tmnh-900.webp)

Looking at the menu board, there were way more kinds of Korean dishes than I expected! From jeyuk bokkeum (stir-fried spicy pork) to stews to set meals, you could pick based on your taste, but what I liked most was the price range! Most menu items are under 10,000 won or in the low 10,000s, which given today's dining prices felt like a really affordable meal.

Looking through the menu, there was also a separate set meal for kids! Sometimes when you go to a Korean restaurant with a child, there isn't really anything suitable for them to eat, but having a dedicated kids' menu makes it a really good option for a family meal.

With a menu diverse enough for kids and adults alike to pick something to their taste, it felt like a great Sinmae restaurant for everyone, regardless of age or gender 😊

## Free unlimited rice and fried egg self-service corner

![Barley candy served after the meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/shinmae-station-lunch-grill-jeyuk/shinmae-station-lunch-grill-jeyuk-12-cjuyb-900.webp)

Inside the restaurant there was a free self-service corner you can use freely during your meal. I especially liked that you can add five-grain rice and fried egg for free. Lots of places these days charge extra even for one more bowl of rice, but at Cafe Dong-i you can eat more without worrying about the cost, which made for a filling meal 👍🏻

As I was eating, I wanted one more fried egg, so I added one! 🍳 Ppoku seemed to be short on rice, so he refilled it once more, haha. On top of that, there was even free barley candy (yeotgangjeong) to snack on lightly after the meal, which was a small but satisfying touch.

## Solo grill Dong-i charcoal-fired jeyuk bokkeum set meal

- ✅️ Beef belly doenjang jjigae set meal ₩10,500

I liked that the jeyuk bokkeum doesn't just come out on a plate, but on an individual charcoal grill. With jeyuk bokkeum, the back half often cools down and gets a bit disappointing compared to the first bite, but with the grill you can keep eating it warm all the way to the end.

There was plenty of meat and vegetables in it, and eating it with rice made for a really filling meal! At first, given the low price, I mainly thought it was good value, but once I actually ate it, the taste was good too, which made it even more satisfying.

### Beef belly doenjang jjigae set meal

The dish Ppoku picked was the beef belly doenjang jjigae set meal. The doenjang jjigae had more beef belly and other ingredients in it than I expected, so it was quite generous! When eating Korean food, nothing beats a hot bowl of doenjang jjigae with a bowl of rice!

Ppoku ate it happily too, and the price wasn't intimidating, so it seemed like a solid choice for a lunch meal.

## Overall review of Cafe Dong-i Sicheol

Visiting Cafe Dong-i Sicheol with Ppoku was satisfying because we could eat a filling Korean meal without worrying about the price. My solo-grill Dong-i charcoal-fired jeyuk bokkeum stayed warm to the very end thanks to the grill, and Ppoku's beef belly doenjang jjigae set meal was generously filled too, so we both ate well and left full.

Being able to refill rice and fried egg at no extra cost was also a big plus! With a wide variety of menu items and even a kids' menu, it seemed like a comfortable place to visit whether you're eating alone, on a date, or out with family.

If you're looking for a Sicheol restaurant or a Sinmae restaurant, or a hearty, good-value lunch spot near Sinmae Station, I recommend Cafe Dong-i Sicheol!
