Hi, this is the Lonely Gourmet. Today's spot is quite a famous one in Gyeongju, often used for family meals. I'm guessing that's because 'abalone' as a title has that whole health-boosting association, haha.

## Where is Wando Cham Jeonbokjip? Easy to find along the Hyeongsangang River trail in Gyeongju

Wando Cham Jeonbokjip sits at 48 Alcheonnam-ro, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongbuk, right along the Hyeongsangang River walking trail, so it's a great place to visit before or after a stroll. Even from a distance, you can tell right away — 'oh, that's an abalone place.'

## Three private rooms and an open kitchen: is the seating good for a family gathering?

I liked that Wando Cham Jeonbokjip has both a hall and three private rooms. Since it seems to be a popular family destination in Gyeongju, having a whole room to yourselves is great for a big family meal — I'd guess this place gets packed around the upcoming holidays.

From the hall, you could see straight into the kitchen — it's an open kitchen. To me, that's a hygiene thing, a kind of pride in being clean. If a place isn't confident, it wouldn't try that. Since it's food I'm about to eat, an open kitchen setup makes me feel like I can trust the place going in.

The hall is set up with 4-person and 2-person tables. Since the tables are pushed together, you could seat even more people if needed.

The first and second rooms each have two tables, and the innermost room is much bigger, good for large groups. You can open the partition to expand the space, so it works comfortably no matter how many people you're with.

On one side of the hall, there were fresh abalones on display. No fish-tank smell at all, and clearly well maintained.

Wando Cham Jeonbokjip's abalone seafood stew comes in small, medium, and large. There are also other abalone dishes and course meals, so there's a satisfyingly wide range to choose from. We ordered the abalone seafood stew (small). Each room had its own air conditioner, so it was nice and comfortable.

The table was quite spacious, no issues at all. The side dishes came out and they were all good ones — healthy, tasty side dishes that older folks especially would love.

The dongchimi (radish water kimchi) that came as a base dish was cool and delicious. The umami was so good I went back for seconds.

Not cheonsachae (imitation jellyfish noodles) but a side dish coated in soy milk — nutty and tasty, and the wood ear mushrooms had a nice chewy texture too. Overall, the side dishes looked like good quality.

## What's in the abalone seafood stew (small)? 4 abalones, octopus and enough for two

Wando Cham Jeonbokjip's abalone seafood stew (small) came with 4 abalones and octopus on top. More than I expected — two adults ate until we were full. The plating was neat too, looks delicious, right?

The octopus was plump — honestly, since it was the small size, I didn't expect much, but the size exceeded expectations.

Not chewy at all, tender and delicious. Wrapping it with the bean sprouts especially gave a satisfying combined texture.

Since this place clearly specializes in abalone, the size of the abalone itself was impressive. Great quality, freshness, and overall condition.

The innards were cooked just right, completely nutty. Eating it felt like getting a real health boost.

I didn't realize there'd also be shrimp, milt, and sea squirt inside. Way more ingredients packed in than I expected. Oh, and there were rice cakes too — such a tender texture, wow.

Putting the milt and bean sprouts over rice like this — the texture is amazing. Just the right sauce thickness with crunchy yet soft textures plus white rice — pure bliss.

### Finishing with somyeon noodles in the sauce (fried rice would work too)

The sauce was so good we added somyeon noodles. Mixing them in let the sauce soak right through — genuinely delicious.

Just mix it all up like this and eat. Depending on preference, I think fried rice would also work really well. A legendary finish — only possible because the sauce itself is so good.

It's been a while since I got such a good health boost, so I'd recommend this place. It's especially great for family gatherings, and given the seating layout, it's also well suited for group meetups or work dinners.
