I was craving meat near Gangnam Station today, so I went to Bongu Hwarro Gangnam. There are so many barbecue places around Gangnam Station, but Bongu Hwarro has long been known as one of the best. Woosamgyeop (thin-sliced beef brisket) is their famous item, but I went specifically for the sogalbisal (beef rib meat).

It's about a 5-minute walk from Gangnam Station Exit 11. Just know the walk is uphill quite a bit. Parking is available, but Gangnam gets extremely crowded, so I'd recommend public transit.

## A storefront that looks the part for charcoal grilling

Here's the storefront. When I arrived, the exterior looked exactly like what the name promises — a charcoal-grill place. Even though it's right in the middle of Gangnam, it had an old-school, established-restaurant kind of vibe. Bongu Hwarro grills over real charcoal, so it really felt like coming for meat. It's a great spot when you're craving pork belly or grilled beef near Gangnam Station.

## Can 150 seats handle company dinners and big groups?

Here's the interior. As you can see from the photos, the whole space is huge. With 150 seats, it looked great for company dinners or group gatherings. A lot of places near Gangnam Station are too cramped for group meals, but this one has plenty of room between tables, so it felt fine for larger groups too.

Here's the menu. Ordering is done through a tablet at the table, so you can just tap and order without calling staff over. They're also running a half-price discount event on additional meat orders, which took some pressure off the bill.

Here are the side dishes. Bongu Hwarro has quite a wide range of banchan (side dishes) — soy-marinated crab (ganjang gejang), chive kimchi, scallion salad, shredded radish, seasoned skate, dongchimi (radish water kimchi), lettuce wraps with garlic, plus salt, wasabi, and a spicy sauce for dipping.

They bring the dongchimi out in a big bowl. It was sweet and tangy, with a nice cool broth.

Here's the beef rib meat for two. It's frozen, but visually it looked fresh.

Before bringing out the meat, they set up the charcoal first, and the charcoal was really good quality. As someone who pays close attention to the charcoal when grilling, this got me excited to eat. They put the beef rib meat and mushrooms on the grill.

It slowly turned golden brown as it cooked. They kept flipping it well as it grilled.

## How was the Hamheung-style cold noodles?

Here's the mul naengmyeon (cold noodle soup). Being Hamheung-style, the dongchimi broth was refreshingly cold. The noodles weren't too chewy or tough, so they went down smoothly. I also happily finished off the meat topping and boiled egg.

I ate the beef rib meat together with the naengmyeon, along with some shredded scallions. Beautifully grilled beef rib meat goes well with just about anything.

## Free Han River ramyeon for the 20th anniversary

Bongu Hwarro Gangnam is celebrating its 20th year in business. They're giving out one free Han River ramyeon per person, so I cooked one up myself. The ramyeon is always Shin Ramyeon.

Since you make it yourself, it might seem confusing, but the instructions are printed right on the front of the container, so it wasn't hard at all. Just put the noodles in, add the soup base, and press button number 1 — done.

Here's the finished Han River ramyeon. It tasted exactly like the ramyeon you get by the actual Han River. Definitely try it if you can. There was also an ice cream machine by the register, but we were too full to try it, haha. If you love ice cream, be sure to grab some.
