I did a short one-night Jeju trip. Check-in at my accommodation was at 4pm, and I was curious what it would feel like to eat a Western-style course meal in a countryside village in Seongsan-eup, so the place I'd booked ahead for a Seongsan, Jeju lunch spot was Nansan-ri Restaurant (난산리식당), a place specializing in course meals.

It's about an hour's drive from Jeju Airport to Seongsan. Since the first lunch seating was at 11:30, I just loaded my bags and headed straight there the moment I got off the plane.

## Where is Nansan-ri Restaurant, and where do you park?

Nansan-ri Restaurant isn't in the middle of a tourist area — it's on a quiet road inside Nansan-ri village. The address is 38 Nansan-ro 41beon-gil, Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do. Following the navigation takes you down an alley where you'll wonder if this is really the right place, but just keep going in.

You'll want to know about parking ahead of time. The road in front of and beside the restaurant is a no-parking zone. Park at the free lot at 32 Nansan-ro 41beon-gil instead — it's in front of a blue-roofed warehouse and about a 1-minute walk away. Apparently there have been complaints from village residents, so it's better to head to the lot rather than park in the alley.

## How to book Nansan-ri Restaurant and lunch seating times

Nansan-ri Restaurant in Seongsan runs on a 100% reservation basis. Lunch is split into a first seating at 11:30am and a second at 1pm, and you really do need to be on time. If you're more than 15 minutes late, it's treated as a no-show.

Since the meal runs one hour and the two seatings run back to back, one late party pushes the next seating back, so if you're coming straight from the airport, give yourself plenty of travel time.

The space was calm and wood-toned — you'd think fine dining means you have to be formal, but this place leaned relaxed. It was a fine dining spot that made for an easy, unhurried Seongsan lunch.

After confirming my reservation, I sat at the window seat of my choice, and they handed me a card with a short message along with a menu listing the course. It felt special even before the meal started, and I got why so many people come here for anniversaries and birthdays. Through the window, the Jeju countryside scenery filled the view.

The Nansan-ri Restaurant lunch is ₩38,000 per person, with the course coming out one plate at a time.

### 1. Bread with fern butter

A baguette and house-made fern butter came out first. It was my first time eating butter with fern (gosari) mixed in — salty and nutty, and it went well with the bread. I liked seeing Jeju ingredients used this way, and it made the first plate interesting right off the bat.

### 2. Egg dish

This was the most memorable dish of the course. An egg sits on tomato sauce, topped with caviar. The flavor combined with the sauce really got my appetite going. You scoop it up together with the sauce underneath, and dipping the baguette into the sauce was good too.

### 3. Salad

Ricotta cheese with orange and grapefruit, topped with lime dressing. The tanginess came through first, which made it good to eat right after the egg dish.

### 4. Jeju black pork tenderloin steak with rosemary potatoes

The main came with a cream sauce made with fermented anchovy sauce (myeoljeot) and rosemary potatoes.

The meat was tender enough that it cut easily without much effort, and I ate through it comfortably with no tough parts. When you think of Jeju, grilled black pork is what usually comes to mind, but the black pork in course form was plenty good too.

The roasted rosemary potatoes weren't heavily fragrant, more of a plain, mild flavor, but alternating bites with the shishito peppers that came alongside kept things from feeling dry. Switching back and forth with the meat made the flavors feel richer.

### 5. Chorizo oil pasta

I ate it as-is without any swaps. It's an oil pasta with finely chopped chorizo mixed in.

The seasoning was on the salty side, but it wasn't an unpleasant salty. There's no spice at all, so people who can't handle spicy food should have no trouble with it.

### 6. Mixed berry panna cotta

The last course of the lunch was dessert. Panna cotta is an Italian milk pudding, topped here with mixed berry compote and cookie crumble underneath, meant to be scooped up together.

The soft pudding with the tart berries on top made for a light finish.

Some items in the base course can be swapped. The main can be changed to a stone flounder octopus steak, and the pasta to basil pesto. I went with the default this time, but I'm thinking of trying the octopus next time I'm in Jeju. If you're looking for somewhere to eat lunch in Seongsan-eup, the Nansan-ri Restaurant lunch course is worth putting on your shortlist. It was a memorable meal for a Seongsan, Jeju lunch spot.
