## A café inside Yeungnam University? Cafe Dongi is really a rice restaurant

Cafe Dongi Yeungnam University Art Center Branch sounds like a café from the name alone, but it's actually a Korean home-style restaurant inside Yeungnam University's Cheonma Art Center. I heard there was a spot getting great reviews as a Yeungnam University restaurant lately, so my wife and I decided to check it out. The place is called 'Cafe Dongi,' which had me thinking it might be an actual café. But my wife said it's a restaurant. A good opportunity came up, so we went straight away.

## How to find the Cheonma Art Center entrance and the 4-hour parking pass

Cafe Dongi is located inside the Cheonma Art Center on campus. Parking at Yeungnam University is normally paid, but they told us visitors get a 4-hour parking pass. Coming back to a campus in my forties felt oddly novel. When we got to Cheonma Art Center, the main hall's front entrance was locked.

Wondering what was going on, I circled the building and found the Cafe Dongi entrance on the side.

To sum it up: face the square main hall's front doors, turn right, and you'll immediately see the Cafe Dongi sign and entrance. Naver Maps, please mark the entrance...T_T. Go in through that Cafe Dongi entrance and head up to the 2nd floor to find the restaurant. I nearly climbed the wrong staircase all the way to the 2nd floor. I doubt anyone else would be this clueless...;;

## Cafe Dongi's café-like dining room: a home-style Korean brand from Daegu

Cafe Dongi Yeungnam University Art Center Branch has a café vibe, with green scenery pouring in through floor-to-ceiling windows. Walking in, a clean, tidy dining room greeted us. The atmosphere felt so café-like that I wondered if that's why it's called Cafe Dongi. I later found out that Cafe Dongi is a home-style restaurant brand that started and built its name in Daegu. The Yeungnam University branch is a recently opened location, so the space itself felt fresh and spotless.

Our seats were by the breezy floor-to-ceiling windows, with green scenery pouring in — it really felt like being at a café. It was a mood-lifting space.

### The egg corner: three frying pans and a queue at the self-bar

Before ordering, I looked around the restaurant and noticed people lined up at the egg-frying station. Turns out fried eggs, five-grain rice, and barley yeot (Korean taffy) are all unlimited refills. I've seen plenty of restaurants that fry eggs to order, but this was the first time I'd seen three pans going with a line waiting.

Even with quite a lot of customers, it didn't feel crowded — probably because the space is spacious and tables have plenty of room between them.

## Ordering woosamgyeop doenjang jjigae and Dongi nuruk tangsuyuk

We settled on beef pork belly doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and Dongi nuruk tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork). All the staff looked like young students, and they were friendly.

Looking around, a sign noted that the rice here is domestic, harvested in Cheorwon. There was even a line about it being rice from the clean DMZ region — small details like this naturally build trust.

The brass-bowl-style table setting came out on a single tray — simple yet clean-looking. The doenjang jjigae, loaded with beef pork belly, had wonderfully tender meat.

A delicious soybean paste soup packed with meat. These days it feels harder and harder to find this kind of thing.

There were only three side dishes, which felt sparse at first, but served neatly alongside the brass bowls, it actually gave an impression of being well put together. Considering the price and the domestic ingredients, focusing on quality over quantity of side dishes seemed like a smart choice.

### Nuruk tangsuyuk served as one whole cut of pork

Next came the nuruk tangsuyuk — not chopped into pieces, but a whole cut of meat coated in the tangsuyuk batter. I appreciated that they didn't pour the sauce over it, respecting those who prefer dipping. Slicing into it, the cross-section of meat looked substantial. Apparently this batter is made by fermenting traditional rice nuruk (fermentation starter) instead of using wheat flour, which is probably why the coating felt light and clean rather than heavy.

Even though it's tangsuyuk from a regular restaurant, you could tell at a glance that a good cut of meat was used. It was a genuinely happy meal.

## Finishing with simple desserts and heotgae tea

After finishing the meal, there were five-grain yeot, peanut caramel, and a cup of heotgae (raisin tree) tea to help digestion, all set out at the bar.

Nothing extravagant, just small touches, but they were the perfect way to end the meal.

It blended the clean feel of a youthful eatery with the charm of a home-style diner that older folks love, all wrapped in a café-like atmosphere — a place that felt local yet clearly cared for. You could feel the owner's attention to detail everywhere, and I'd like to bring my son next time.
