## In short

Yukbanjang Gwangjanggakoa Gwangko Branch is a yukgaejang (spicy beef soup) restaurant near Gamsam Station in Dalseo, Daegu. The wanggalbi yukgaejang (short rib version), limited to 20 bowls a day, had already sold out by lunchtime, so the order became red yukgaejang, yukgaejang kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) and grilled bulgogi — and the smoky grilled bulgogi won out over the soup, whose thick scallions kept their bite. If you are coming with a meat-loving child, Yukbanjang's yukgaejang plus grilled bulgogi is the combination to order.

When you're craving a hot bowl of yukgaejang (spicy beef soup) in Gamsam-dong, Daegu, this is a good place to head to — Yukbanjang Gwangjanggakoa Gwangko Branch.

Yukbanjang is located at 177 Dangsan-ro, Dalseo-gu, Daegu, and it's close enough to Gamsam Station that it wasn't hard to find. The restaurant was clean with tables spaced out nicely, so it looked like a good spot for a family meal too.

## Parking and seating at Yukbanjang in Gamsam-dong

We parked near Duryu Park and walked over, and about halfway between the restaurant and the park there's a large open parking lot (across from Duryu Central Park). Not sure about weekdays, but it was free on the weekend.

There's also a private room inside, so it seems like a good option for group visits without being disturbed.

## Why the short rib yukgaejang sells out: only 20 bowls a day

We had one very important mission that day: the wanggalbi yukgaejang (short rib yukgaejang)! My daughter is a total carnivore, so we went in excited, saying "let's try the yukgaejang with big short ribs!" But it turns out that dish is limited to just 20 servings a day, and by the time we arrived around lunchtime, it was already sold out.

Ugh… I guess we should have done an opening run. If you're going specifically for the wanggalbi yukgaejang, I really recommend getting there right when they open. Nothing's more disappointing than the dish you wanted selling out.

So, setting aside our disappointment, we ordered red yukgaejang, yukgaejang kalguksu, and grilled bulgogi instead.

## Red yukgaejang at Yukbanjang: broth with thick, crunchy scallions

First, the yukgaejang broth was spicy yet rich. It was loaded with scallions, which gave it that signature refreshing yukgaejang flavor, and the meat in it made a single bowl quite filling. Apparently Yukbanjang doesn't boil the scallions down too long in order to keep their texture, and sure enough, you could really feel that crisp scallion bite along with the broth.

In my 40 years of life, I never knew scallions could be this delicious, haha. When we first ordered, I saw "add scallions" on the menu and thought, huh? why would you add more scallions? But after one bite, I totally got it.

Also, you can ask them to adjust the spice level when ordering. We had it at the default level, and it wasn't as spicy as I expected. So if you're not great with spicy food, adjusting the heat should work out fine.

### What does the yukgaejang kalguksu taste like?

The yukgaejang kalguksu (noodle soup) had chewy noodles combined with the yukgaejang broth, giving it a different kind of charm. It definitely felt different from having yukgaejang with rice. If you're a noodle person, I'd recommend this one too.

## The surprise winner: Yukbanjang's grilled bulgogi

There was one unexpected dark horse that day — the grilled bulgogi! My daughter had wanted the wanggalbi yukgaejang specifically for the meat, and since that sold out, we ordered this instead.

But it turned out to be way more delicious than expected, haha. The grilled bulgogi had a proper smoky char that hit you from the first bite, and the sweet soy-based sauce paired perfectly with the meat. Sauces that are too sweet can get old fast, but this one struck a nice balance of sweetness and smokiness that kept me reaching for more.

Best of all, the meat was tender, not chewy, so it was great to eat with a kid too. Ironically, this was the dish we only ordered because the wanggalbi yukgaejang sold out, and I found myself thinking, "wait, isn't this a must-order alongside the yukgaejang?"

If you're looking for a yukgaejang restaurant in Daegu to visit with kids, I'd especially recommend ordering the grilled bulgogi alongside it. Yukgaejang alone might be too spicy for a child, but with the sweet grilled bulgogi on the table, it's easy to pair with rice and share dishes as a family.

## Leave a receipt review for a bag of old-style Korean snacks

It said that leaving a receipt review gets you a bag of old-style Korean snacks (yetnal-gwaja), but honestly, even though I do these sponsored visits, I'm too shy to ask for extras on top of a free meal.

But on our way out, my daughter spotted these snacks by the entrance and got upset with me, asking why I didn't get the review snacks. I figured it'd be some tiny palm-sized thing, but it turned out to be a decent-sized bag full of all kinds of interesting old-style snacks. If you're visiting after reading this, definitely leave a review and grab this — especially if you're going with kids, absolutely get it.

There's also mouthwash at the register, so if you're worried about not being able to brush your teeth afterward, that's handy too.

## What I would order on a second visit to Yukbanjang

Next time, I'll definitely go a bit earlier and try the wanggalbi yukgaejang I missed out on this time. But even without the short ribs, the yukgaejang was plenty delicious, and the grilled bulgogi was far more satisfying than expected, so the disappointment faded fast. If you're looking for a good yukgaejang restaurant in Daegu, try a hot bowl of yukgaejang along with the grilled bulgogi. Especially if you're going with a meat-loving kid, this combo is pretty great.
