## In short

Anok is a Korean restaurant in Mapo, Seoul, near Hongik University Station Exit 9, serving Korean dishes in a hanok-style setting. The clear pork gomtang, tender meat, and pleasantly chewy pork tail stood out. Verdict: Anok is a memorable choice for Korean food in Hongdae.

I was recently looking for somewhere to eat in Hongdae and came across this Korean restaurant with such a special atmosphere.

> It was Anok in Hongdae!

*It was so unexpected that I wondered, “Is this really Hongdae?” haha*

When you think of Hongdae, bustling streets, cafés, and restaurants with a youthful vibe are probably the first things that come to mind, but this place felt completely different from the entrance onward.

## For Korean food with a hanok feel in Hongdae

The atmosphere is the first reason I’d recommend this Korean restaurant in Hongdae—it was seriously amazing. Once inside, you can feel that tranquil atmosphere unique to a hanok, so it briefly felt like I’d stepped into a completely different place, haha.

Even from the outside, it looks like somewhere you’d really want to go in, right? It kind of felt like entering a wealthy family’s traditional Korean house.

*For Korean food in Hongdae, this is Anok*

There was a wide range of customers, from older guests to people who looked like college students.

I sat by the window and looked outside. The view beyond the window blended with the traditional mood too, so I felt happy the whole time I was there.

Kimchi, kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), dipping sauce, and seasoned gungchae (stem lettuce)!!! Overall, the banchan (side dishes) were nicely seasoned and well fermented. The seasoned gungchae tasted a bit like pickles, so it went well with every dish. The dipping sauce was a little spicy but nutty too—exactly my taste.

Anok has everything from meal dishes such as Pyongyang naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) and clear pork gomtang (pork soup) to shareable dishes such as braised pork tail. That day, I had

- Pyongyang naengmyeon
- Braised pork tail
- Clear pork gomtang

> Every dish came out neatly plated and perfectly put together, so the whole spread looked so tidy too!

The braised pork tail came first, followed by the Pyongyang naengmyeon.

## What does braised pork tail taste like?

Pork tail isn’t a cut I usually eat, so I was curious what it would be like. Once I tried it, though, it felt just like pulling meat from jokbal (braised pig’s trotters).

I especially loved the chewy fatty parts. When you bite into them, they’re softly tender yet springy and chewy, with a rich, nutty flavor coming through.

The skin and fatty parts were really chewy, while the meat inside was moderately dry, so there were subtly different textures even within one piece. The sauce is on the spicy side, too. It starts with a sweet-savory flavor, then a gentle heat slowly rises at the end, giving your mouth a little kick.

That said, it isn’t the kind of heat that hits you all at once—it cuts through the richness of the pork tail instead. It was especially good alongside lighter, clear-broth dishes like Pyongyang naengmyeon and clear gomtang. The sauce had soaked nicely into the surface of the meat, spreading a salty, spicy flavor while the nutty richness of the chewy fatty meat came through too.

## Pyongyang naengmyeon with plenty of meat

It looked very neat from the start, but the generous, large pieces of meat piled on top of the noodles really caught my eye.

The broth was very clear and clean. At first, it tasted mild and nutty, then a subtle umami note followed as it lingered. My first bite was simple, but after a few more mouthfuls it became strangely addictive.

It had that characteristically gentle Pyongyang naengmyeon flavor, but it didn’t end up completely bland—there was a soft flavor left in the mouth. The noodles’ mild taste was memorable too.

## The clear pork gomtang was my favorite

Of the dishes I had that day, the clear pork gomtang was the most to my taste. Just as its name suggests, the broth was very clear, but when I took a spoonful, the pork flavor was more distinct than I expected.

The broth went down cleanly without feeling murky or heavy. It also had a subtle, savory richness characteristic of pork. In short, it was clear but not bland!

After a sip of broth, a gentle umami flavor lingered in my mouth, so I kept reaching for another spoonful. There was a really generous amount of meat inside too. Above all, the meat was tender rather than dry, so its moist texture carried on beautifully with the broth.

Even though it was lean meat, the grain came apart softly, which I liked. When you pick up a piece, it tastes mild while that distinctive nutty pork flavor comes through strongly. Both the broth and the meat were about subtle depth rather than bold seasoning, so this suited my palate best out of the three dishes.

## A hanok space apart from Hongdae’s streets

All three dishes I had that day were generous with meat, so the table looked abundant as soon as everything was set out. The clear pork gomtang had a mild, nutty broth and tender meat; the Pyongyang naengmyeon had an appealing subtle umami in its clear, nutty broth. And the braised pork tail stayed with me for its chewy fatty meat and lightly spicy sauce.

The food was great, but Anok’s atmosphere is what really stayed in my mind. It is in Hongdae, yet once I stepped into the hanok-style space, it felt completely separated from the mood of the streets outside.

Especially when I looked outside from the window seat, the hanok’s wood and traditional atmosphere flowed together so naturally that I almost forgot I was in Hongdae for a moment. There were quite a few customers even at weekday lunch, so I think plenty of people come here for lunch too.

If you’re looking for Pyongyang naengmyeon or clear pork gomtang in Hongdae and want to experience a slightly different setting too?? I recommend Anok, a Korean restaurant near Hongik University Station Exit 9!
