There was a place near here I'd always meant to try whenever I passed by and saw its clean exterior. It's a restaurant called Donggok Jemyeon, and I'd heard they use hanwoo (Korean beef) sagol (bone) that's hand-selected in-house and simmered for over 12 hours — that got me really excited. This time I finally made up my mind and visited this well-known spot among Gyodong, Daegu restaurants.

## Parking at Donggok Jemyeon: 30 minutes at Dongseong-ro Parking Lot

If you park at the nearby Dongseong-ro Parking Lot, Donggok Jemyeon gives you 30 minutes of parking support. Bringing a car downtown usually means worrying about parking first, but luckily here you just park at the Dongseong-ro Parking Lot right nearby and get 30 minutes covered. Thanks to that I could park comfortably and eat, which put me in a good mood from the moment I walked in.

## Seating and atmosphere: is Donggok Jemyeon good with kids?

The interior of Donggok Jemyeon blends white and dark wood tones, with tables for two and four and even baby chairs on hand. Walking in, the interior looked really clean and tidy. It seemed like a good spot to eat alone too, and the 2- and 4-person seating was well arranged. The baby chairs were also well stocked, so it looked like a comfortable stop for families with kids as well.

## What's on the menu at Donggok Jemyeon

Looking at the menu board, hanwoo sagol kalguksu and yukgaejang kalguksu stood as the signature dishes, alongside plenty of hearty options like gabrisal pork suyuk, chicken muchim, and a seafood chive pancake set. The seasonal menu offered a wide range of choices too, including chogye bibim kalguksu, seoritae kongguksu, and an extra-rich samgye kalguksu with a whole chicken leg. They were also running an event giving away chicken muchim to anyone who left a receipt review.

We visited in the evening, so excluding the sold-out items, we ordered the hanwoo sagol kalguksu, chogye bibim kalguksu, and seafood chive pancake.

## Side dishes and hanwoo sagol kalguksu with thin noodles

As soon as we ordered, the owner set out kimchi and cucumber doenjang muchim as side dishes. One bite in and I immediately thought both were completely delicious. The slightly spicy, crunchy kimchi paired well with the mild broth and showed off solid fundamentals.

A little later, the steaming hanwoo sagol kalguksu arrived at the table first. Taking a small spoonful of the broth, the deep, rich umami of the beef bone simmered for 12 hours filled my mouth. I chose the thin noodle, which was soft and chewy and went down smoothly, and I didn't feel bloated afterward either.

Our kid seemed to like it too, picking up the spoon the moment the food arrived and going into a full-on eating frenzy. The broth was mild yet savory, so it was the perfect dish for mixing with rice for kids.

## How was the chogye bibim kalguksu?

Next up, the chogye bibim kalguksu was the best treat for perking up your appetite in this kind of weather. The tangy-sweet special sauce was piled generously with tender chicken toppings, and it went straight into my mouth with a slurp before I knew it. The noodles are made in-house, so they had a springy, bouncy bite that was refreshing and really delicious.

## Seafood chive pancake with plump shrimp

The seafood chive pancake, fried up golden and fresh, was stunning just to look at! It came with a soy sauce with onion and chili and a vinegar-chili sauce, and the batter was thin with edges fried crispy like a cracker. Crunch! Best of all, plump shrimp were piled generously on top, so you could really feel that no ingredients were spared, and topping it with kimchi made a fantastic combination. Our kid excitedly picked out just the shrimp (?) one by one, haha 🤣

## Finishing the meal with a yogurt dessert

We cleaned every dish and even enjoyed a yogurt dessert at the end. It's a small thing, but that kind of little touch of care left me feeling good all the way to the end of the meal.

A note written on one wall of the restaurant said they always use fresh ingredients and cook hygienically, with the mindset of feeding their own family. Their commitment to making sure every customer eats well and leaves happy really came through in both the taste of the food and the kindness of the service — I could tell this place will keep being loved as a Gyodong, Daegu restaurant for a long time.

From the deep, rich hanwoo sagol broth to the thin, chewy noodles and the carefully made side dishes, nothing was lacking that day. If you're looking for a comforting, well-put-together Korean meal or properly made kalguksu, I'd definitely recommend visiting Donggok Jemyeon, a Gyodong, Daegu restaurant. Recommended!
