## In short

Hyangtaek Seongseo Keimyung University Branch is a tidy rice-bowl Korean restaurant in Dalseo, Daegu, near Keimyung University. On a weekday lunch with her mother, who had been in poor health, the writer ordered mackerel gondre rice (14,000 won), eggplant doenjang rice bowl (13,000 won) and the opening-event galbi platter, then had another mackerel gondre rice packed to take home. The mackerel gondre rice, still fragrant with gondre (Korean wild aster), was the dish most worth ordering at Hyangtaek.

I heard a tidy rice-bowl place had opened near Keimyung University in Seongseo, so I went with my mom! Her health hasn't been great lately, so I was thinking — isn't there something healthy she could eat? — and that's how I ended up at this place!

## How long is the weekday lunch wait at Hyangtaek?

Since it hasn't been open long, the interior is clean and fresh. See how packed it is with customers? I visited around 12:30 on a weekday and there was about one party waiting. Even while we were eating, three office workers tried to come in but left because of the wait. Seems like word has already spread around the neighborhood haha.

On top of that, there was also a Naver receipt event where you could try the mushroom platter, so this place really doesn't hold back haha.

## How the restaurant tells you to eat each dish

While waiting for the food, I studied up on how to eat it the tasty way.

- Tear the mackerel and eggplant apart well and mix
- Wrap in the gopchang gim (thick seaweed sheets) and jeotgal (seasoned seafood relish)
- Add the special sauce for a fresh new flavor

## Side dishes: miso doenjang soup and gungchae pickles

The basic side dishes arrived~ let's take a look at each one~

First, the miso doenjang soup. Not too sweet, exactly what you need to whet your appetite!

Gungchae (a pickled greens side dish) pickles, jeotgal, and gopchang gim. The gim and jeotgal were great for wrapping, and the gungchae was perfect for cleansing the palate between bites. In particular, the gungchae's soy sauce flavor wasn't sharp at all — it was soft and fragrant!! Even my mom admitted it was delicious and ate it happily!

## How does the mackerel gondre rice taste?

Here's the mackerel gondre rice! The rice and fish aren't pre-seasoned, so you season it yourself with the soy sauce. The gondre (wild aster) fragrance was truly outstanding. Genuinely delicious — highly recommend this one!!

## Tips for mixing the eggplant doenjang rice bowl

The eggplant doenjang rice bowl has three big chunks of eggplant laid out beautifully. Underneath there's chives, doenjang-seasoned ground meat, and something crunchy that looks like rice. This one too, I tore up the eggplant and mixed it all together. The doenjang has a bit of seasoning, so rather than mixing it all in at once, I'd recommend mixing gradually and tasting as you go! When you feel like changing it up mid-meal, drizzling the vinegar sauce they provide gives it a whole different flavor!

## The opening-event galbi platter at Hyangtaek

The galbi platter — once this arrived on top of everything else, I thought the main dishes weren't small portions to begin with, so I'd be full, and worried whether we could finish it all! This place is generous and doesn't skimp on portions at all. The galbi tasted sweet like tteokgalbi (sweet minced short-rib patties) the moment I took a bite. If you like sweet-savory food, this will be right up your alley!!

## What comes in the mackerel gondre rice takeout order?

Last up is a photo of the mackerel gondre rice we packed to take home — the dish I enjoyed most. Even the takeout packaging is so neatly put together! The one difference from eating in-store is that they add bean sprouts extra for takeout! It seems great whether you eat in the restaurant or take it home, so everyone should give it a try~
