## In short

Donggok Jemyeon Daegu Dongseong-ro Main Branch is a Korean restaurant in Gyodong, downtown Jung-gu, Daegu, serving kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) made from noodles hand-kneaded fresh every morning. The order was extra-concentrated samgye kalguksu, yukgaejang kalguksu (extra spicy), and a half-plate of Gabriel boiled pork, to check out the chewy thick house noodles and tender pork. I was visiting Gyodong in Daegu and looking for a place to eat when this kalguksu restaurant, Donggok Jemyeon, caught my eye! Self-made noodles, they said, so I got curious about the noodles and went to check it out. Places that make their own noodles are always tasty, haha.

This is the exterior of Donggok Jemyeon in downtown Gyodong, Daegu. The orange sign stands out so it's easy to find! Parking downtown is always a headache 🥲 but the nearby paid lot gives you 30 minutes free~! Dongseongno Parking Lot (Munhwa-dong 12-22), about a 2-minute walk from the restaurant.

## A comfortable vibe even for solo diners

![앤티크한 분위기의 동곡제면 매장 내부](https://img.superchart.com/images/daegu-gyodong-kalguksu-solo-meal-dongok/daegu-gyodong-kalguksu-solo-meal-dongok-03-126uc-900.webp)

The interior has a slightly antique feel, giving off old-school kalguksu-shop vibes while also being super clean and tidy. The restroom is inside too, which was convenient! There are two-person tables as well, so it's a good spot if you're looking for a solo-dining restaurant in Gyodong, Daegu. When I visited there were solo diners as well as families.

## How do you choose noodle thickness and spice level?

You could choose the noodle thickness, and since I came to taste the self-made kalguksu noodles, I kept it basic, haha. Kalguksu tastes best with thick noodles anyway. The yukgaejang kalguksu I picked also had a spice level choice! I'm a spicy-food champ, lol, so I ordered it 'extra spicy.'

Gabriel boiled pork is oddly hard to find on menus (?) so I ordered it as a side too! They sell a half-plate portion for 1-2 people, so it's light on both price and quantity, which meant I couldn't not order it. Meat is always welcome, haha, and hot soup with boiled pork is always a welcome combo too.

### Side dishes: cucumber peppers and spicy-tangy kimchi

The side dishes are cucumber peppers and kimchi. Is the kimchi silbi kimchi? It had a spicy-tangy taste that went so, so well with the kalguksu. Definitely eat them together 🥵🔥

## The three dishes I ordered

At this Gyodong, Daegu restaurant Donggok Jemyeon, I ordered three things: extra-concentrated samgye kalguksu (self-made noodles), yukgaejang kalguksu (self-made noodles), and a half-plate of boiled pork (recommended as a side to the noodles) ~_~

![A bowl of Donggok Jemyeon's extra-concentrated samgye kalguksu](https://img.superchart.com/images/daegu-gyodong-kalguksu-solo-meal-dongok/daegu-gyodong-kalguksu-solo-meal-dongok-11-292uy-1200.webp)

### Extra-concentrated samgye kalguksu

They say the broth's characteristic richness comes from simmering herbal medicine ingredients and chicken bones for over 10 hours. It's incredibly rich, a broth color that rivals dedicated samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) restaurants ••• samgye ivory ^.^

![Extra-concentrated samgye kalguksu with half a chicken inside](https://img.superchart.com/images/daegu-gyodong-kalguksu-solo-meal-dongok/daegu-gyodong-kalguksu-solo-meal-dongok-12-9gb57-900.webp)

The bowl is packed with half a chicken. Half-chicken kalguksu, haha, you can tell from the name, lol. With such concentrated broth and half a chicken loaded in, it looks like it would do wonders for your health.

What I liked about the self-made noodles at this Gyodong, Daegu restaurant Donggok Jemyeon is that they weren't too long. The noodle length was just right, so each bite fit nicely in one mouthful (?). I could eat cleanly without excessive slurping!!

![Yukgaejang kalguksu ordered extra spicy](https://img.superchart.com/images/daegu-gyodong-kalguksu-solo-meal-dongok/daegu-gyodong-kalguksu-solo-meal-dongok-13-1hffn-900.webp)

### Yukgaejang kalguksu 'extra spicy'

A spicy yukgaejang kalguksu made with a Korean beef bone base and a spicy handmade minced seasoning. I chose 'extra spicy' and the broth turned out quite red — just looking at it feels like it could cure a hangover I never even had, lol.

![Thick house noodles lifted out of the yukgaejang kalguksu](https://img.superchart.com/images/daegu-gyodong-kalguksu-solo-meal-dongok/daegu-gyodong-kalguksu-solo-meal-dongok-14-1ncw1-900.webp)

Despite the fierce look, it wasn't actually that spicy, so if you want a refreshingly spicy hit, going extra spicy should be fine!! The yukgaejang kalguksu has that savory depth from the bone broth ••• ! This one also paired perfectly with the thick house noodles — being self-made, the chewy texture really came through.

### Gabriel boiled pork half-plate

The Gabriel boiled pork was less dry and wonderfully tender, moist and delicious ,, 🤤 The pork itself has no gamey smell and is tasty on its own, so anything you pair it with works!! Highly, highly, highly recommended if you like boiled pork. It's a side dish that pairs great with kalguksu too.
