While looking for a place to eat with my child in Cheongju, I visited Sorori Sotbap Gagyeong Direct Branch in Gagyeong-dong. I love sotbap (pot rice) and came across it while searching for good restaurants in Cheongju, and what I liked most was that they start cooking the rice only after you order. Instead of scooping from rice cooked ahead of time, they begin preparing the pot rice the moment a customer orders, so you can properly taste freshly cooked, piping-hot rice.

When eating out with a child, it's not just the menu that matters — things like a baby chair or tableware that make the meal comfortable matter too, and Sorori Sotbap had all of that ready, which made the visit even more comfortable.

## Where is Sorori Sotbap Gagyeong Direct Branch, and where do you park?

Sorori Sotbap Gagyeong Direct Branch is located in the Seohyeon Plaza building, across from Gagyeong Xi apartments in Cheongju. If you're driving, you can use the commercial parking lot behind the building, which allows up to 2 hours of parking — plenty of time for a relaxed meal. When you're out and about with a kid, finding easy parking is always a relief, so this was a nice plus.

The staff were kind when we walked in, and once we mentioned we had a child with us, they made sure we could eat comfortably, which made for a great first impression right from the start.

## Pot rice cooked from scratch the moment you order

The biggest thing that stood out about Sorori Sotbap was the care put into the rice. The name Sorori comes from Sorori in Oksan-myeon and the Oksan Sorori rice grains — said to be the oldest rice grains discovered in the world — making this a pot rice restaurant branded around rice itself. They use rice from the Chungbuk region, and Jincheon rice in particular is kept in ultra-low-temperature cold storage so its flavor doesn't change. Because they only start cooking once an order comes in, there's a bit of a wait before the food arrives, but I liked thinking of it as the wait for truly freshly made pot rice.

The rice, glossy straight out of the pot, looked delicious just to look at. Sorori also uses sesame oil and perilla oil that aren't off-the-shelf products but are pressed the traditional way under contract with a local oil mill. Drizzled over the rice, the subtle nutty aroma paired really well with the pot rice.

## Beef rib pot rice at 16,000 won and how to eat it

Beef rib pot rice is ₩16,000 and is introduced as Sorori Sotbap's signature menu. The beef ribs sit on top of the freshly cooked rice, making it easy to scoop up rice and meat together. Once the pot rice arrives, you first mix the rice and toppings well, then scoop it into a bowl and season to taste with soy sauce, butter, or furikake. It was also delicious wrapped in the seaweed served alongside, so a single pot rice could be enjoyed several different ways.

The pot rice itself was warm and fluffy, and paired with the meat it made for a hearty, satisfying meal. Sorori's beef rib pot rice has reportedly sold over 100,000 bowls, so it seems like a great pick for a first visit.

## What does the 13,000 won fresh salmon buckwheat gimbap taste like?

Alongside the pot rice, we ordered the fresh salmon buckwheat gimbap (seaweed rice roll) for ₩13,000, made with plump, fresh salmon. Unlike regular gimbap, this uses buckwheat noodles instead of rice, so the texture felt a bit different from the start.

At Sorori, they boil buckwheat noodles fresh every morning, let them sit in a special tsuyu sauce, and use sweet egg and house-cured salmon.

This method cuts down the salmon's fishy edge while bringing out its savory flavor, so it's worth trying at least once if you like salmon. The fresh salmon buckwheat gimbap tastes even better with wasabi soy sauce, and eating it in between bites of the pot rice made for a nice combination :)

## Abalone butter pot rice and shrimp buckwheat gimbap, the other favourites

Sorori Sotbap has quite a wide menu. Besides beef rib pot rice, you can choose from abalone pot rice, crab meat pot rice, Korean beef intestine pot rice, mackerel pot rice, cockle pot rice, mentaiko (seasoned pollock roe) pot rice, and more. The abalone butter pot rice is ₩16,000 and made with live abalone from Wando. It seemed like a good choice for visiting with parents or when you want a slightly more special meal.

For buckwheat gimbap, besides the fresh salmon version, there's also shrimp buckwheat gimbap. It's limited to 10 servings a day and comes with fried shrimp and a spicy special sauce. The dipping sauce changes depending on the type — pickled ginger for plain buckwheat gimbap, wasabi soy sauce for salmon gimbap, and tartar sauce for shrimp gimbap makes each one even tastier.

## Baby chair, baby tableware and a fire truck toy for kids

Sorori Sotbap Gagyeong Direct Branch has a baby chair and baby tableware ready, along with baby rice and seaweed, which made it easy to visit with my child. For those of us who eat out with kids, whether the place makes things comfortable for a baby really matters, and being able to use their rice and seaweed for my child without packing my own food was a real relief.

What I loved most about this visit was that they gave my child a mini toy as a gift. They gave her a mini fire truck toy, and since it was just the right size for little hands, she really loved it. She could play with it while we waited for the food, which took a lot of the usual pressure off waiting with a kid.

For families visiting with a child, having a baby chair, baby tableware, and baby rice and seaweed ready makes this a restaurant in Gagyeong-dong, Cheongju that I'd recommend for an easier visit.

From Monday to Friday it's also open 11:00 to 20:30, with a break time from 15:00 to 17:00. If visiting on a weekday, it's best to avoid the break time, and if you're planning dinner, checking the last order time ahead is a good idea too. Parking is available at the commercial lot behind the building for up to 2 hours, making it convenient to visit by car.

Sorori Sotbap felt like more than just a place that serves rice in a pot — starting the cooking only after an order comes in and using rice and ingredients from the Chungbuk region gave the sense that they truly wanted to serve a proper, warm meal. From hearty options like beef rib pot rice to abalone pot rice and various seasonal pot rice dishes, plus buckwheat gimbap that pairs so well with the rice, there was plenty of range to choose from.

Above all, visiting with my child was made so much more satisfying by the baby chair, baby tableware, baby rice and seaweed, and even the mini fire truck toy gift. If you're in Gagyeong-dong, Cheongju craving warm, freshly cooked pot rice and looking for a place where you can eat comfortably with a child, Sorori Sotbap Gagyeong Direct Branch is worth a stop. A bowl of piping-hot rice piled high with meat and toppings, paired with buckwheat gimbap, made for a truly satisfying meal. This is a Gagyeong-dong pot rice restaurant I'd especially recommend for anyone looking for a family dining spot with kids in Cheongju.
