## In short

Cheongwon Restaurant: Cooking Budae-jjigae, Cheonan Dujeong Main Branch is a Korean restaurant in Dujeong-dong, Seobuk-gu, Cheonan that serves Songtan-style budae-jjigae (army stew) and its own Cheongwon budae-jjigae, 12,000 won per serving. On a day the writer missed regular meal hours, Cheongwon Restaurant had no break time, so a late walk-in was possible, and the Cheongwon budae-jjigae with added glass noodles and cheese balanced the sharp heat of cheongyang chili against savory beef brisket and minced meat. Having tried several budae-jjigae spots around Cheonan, the writer still ranks Cheongwon's version first.

## Why go back to Cheongwon Restaurant for budae-jjigae in Dujeong-dong, Cheonan?

You'd think budae-jjigae is more or less the same everywhere, but the broth is actually completely different once you actually taste it. Some places lean heavily into the salty flavor of ham and sausage, some feel thick and flat, and some are as heavy and rich as a bone-broth soup. I've had budae-jjigae many times around Cheonan, but Cheongwon's version, in Dujeong-dong, is still the one that best matches my taste.

## Cheongwon Restaurant Cheonan Dujeong main branch: location, parking and hours

Cheongwon Restaurant: Cooking Budae-jjigae, Cheonan Dujeong Main Branch is on the 1st floor at 32-4 Dujeongsangga 4-gil, Seobuk-gu, Cheonan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. You can park in front of the building, and alley parking is also possible. If you walk a bit past the restaurant along the alley, there's a paid parking lot at the end too. I often park there without any worries. So parking is definitely not an issue here!!

Hours are Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with last order at 8:30 p.m. It's closed every Sunday, so if you're planning a weekend visit, it's worth checking ahead.

### No break time at Cheongwon Restaurant, so a late meal works

I often miss regular meal times, and the great thing about Cheongwon Restaurant: Cooking Budae-jjigae, Cheonan Dujeong Main Branch is that there's no break time, so you can visit anytime!! I love that. A lot of salon owners who come in from other regions for classes eat here, and I've been going often lately!!~ It's especially great on rainy days. It's not a place you visit once and forget — it keeps coming to mind and you end up back here whenever you want it.

## Songtan budae-jjigae or Cheongwon budae-jjigae: which to order?

Cheongwon's signature menu items are Songtan budae-jjigae and Cheongwon budae-jjigae. Songtan budae-jjigae is ₩11,000 per serving, and the Cheongwon budae-jjigae I had this time is ₩12,000 per serving. Cheongwon budae-jjigae is Songtan-style budae-jjigae with cheongyang chili and beef brisket added. With domestic minced meat mixed in too, the depth of the broth is quite different from a simple budae-jjigae made with just ham and sausage. I like a spicy, rich broth and budae-jjigae with meat in it, so Cheongwon budae-jjigae suited my taste well.

### Adding glass noodles and cheese to the Cheongwon budae-jjigae

This time I also added glass noodles and cheese. Basic cheese comes included, but I thought I'd make it richer today!!

There was also a review event going on. They give you a rolled egg omelet, and honestly, rolled egg goes perfectly with budae-jjigae. Definitely try it~

## Cheongwon Restaurant's self-serve bar: rice, side dishes and ramyeon noodles

At the self-serve bar you can grab more rice and side dishes, and there are ramyeon noodles for the pot too. But we're always so full from the generous portions that we barely get to the ramyeon noodles. Lolol. They really give you a lot.

If you ask for more fish cake side dish, they'll give you extra~

Once the budae-jjigae is out, you just wait and someone comes to stir it all for you. So you really don't have to touch it yourself.

## What comes in one pot of Cheongwon budae-jjigae

The ingredients come piled high in a big pot — thinly sliced beef brisket, ham, sausage, domestic minced meat, tofu and vegetables are arranged nicely on top, with cheongyang chili and seasoning layered over it all. There's plenty of beef brisket on top, so meat lovers will be satisfied too~ The brisket releases a savory fat, the ham and sausage add that signature budae-jjigae umami, and as the minced meat and seasoning dissolve in, the broth's color gets deeper and deeper. My kid had already finished a bowl of rice with just the side dishes before the stew even arrived, and went back to the self-serve bar for more. Haha.

### How spicy is it? Mild enough for a teenager

The first thing you taste is the sharp heat from the cheongyang chili. It's a level of spice my high-schooler can handle just fine. Just enough heat to cleanly cut through the potential greasiness of the ham and brisket.

> Sharp at first, savory at the finish

After that comes the rich, savory flavor from the brisket and minced meat. The broth is substantial without being heavy, and not flat either. It reduces without getting too salty, which surprised me. There's extra broth ready right beside you, so you can pour more in without having to move at all.

Spiciness, savoriness, and the salty umami of ham all come together in balance within one pot.

![Close-up of budae-jjigae with a deepened broth](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonan-dujeong-budae-jjigae-cheongwon/cheonan-dujeong-budae-jjigae-cheongwon-18-twc38-900.webp)

![Scooping ingredients out of the budae-jjigae pot](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonan-dujeong-budae-jjigae-cheongwon/cheonan-dujeong-budae-jjigae-cheongwon-19-6dguy-900.webp)

## Beef brisket and Korean minced meat in the stew

At this Dujeong-dong Cheonan favorite, the combination of beef brisket and minced meat in the budae-jjigae is truly excellent. The thinly sliced brisket cooks through and softens in the broth, and the meat's savory flavor spreads naturally through the whole pot — picking up a piece of brisket with ham and vegetables together changes the texture and flavor in every bite, if that makes sense. The domestic minced meat dissolves naturally into the broth, so wherever you scoop from, you get that meaty umami, and having minced meat scattered throughout the broth — rather than just a few big meat chunks — makes it even better when you mix rice into the broth.

![Domestic minced meat dissolved into the broth](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonan-dujeong-budae-jjigae-cheongwon/cheonan-dujeong-budae-jjigae-cheongwon-20-1bwlq-900.webp)

![Cooked beef brisket and sausage](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonan-dujeong-budae-jjigae-cheongwon/cheonan-dujeong-budae-jjigae-cheongwon-21-izmut-900.webp)

Scoop up the well-cooked brisket, ham and sausage, put them on warm rice, add a spoonful or two of broth to moisten it, and — a whole bowl of rice disappears!! Eaten this way, the salty flavor of the ham, the savoriness of the meat, and the spicy broth soak between the grains of rice and it all just works. At first I pick out the ingredients one by one, but once the broth reduces and gets richer, I end up pouring plenty of broth over my rice.

![Budae-jjigae ingredients placed on top of rice](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonan-dujeong-budae-jjigae-cheongwon/cheonan-dujeong-budae-jjigae-cheongwon-22-1uwr7-900.webp)

The longer the stew simmers, the more the flavor from the brisket and ham soaks into the broth, deepening the umami further compared to the start.

## The verdict on Cheongwon budae-jjigae in Cheonan

There are plenty of photogenic or trendy spots, but there's a separate category of food that stays on your mind after just one meal. For me, that's Cheongwon Restaurant's Cheongwon budae-jjigae. The sharpness of cheongyang chili, the savoriness of beef brisket, the deep umami of domestic minced meat, and the familiar flavor of ham and sausage all come together well. It keeps that classic rich budae-jjigae flavor intact while never feeling too heavy to keep eating, so a bowl of rice disappears fast.

![Cheongwon budae-jjigae after the broth has reduced](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonan-dujeong-budae-jjigae-cheongwon/cheonan-dujeong-budae-jjigae-cheongwon-24-otx48-900.webp)

I'd recommend Cheongwon budae-jjigae to anyone looking for a good budae-jjigae spot in Cheonan, anyone wanting a hot Korean dish in Dujeong-dong, or anyone who prefers a budae-jjigae with real meat and a spicy broth over one that's mostly just ham. If you finish a bowl of budae-jjigae and find yourself thinking about that broth days later, isn't that the sign of a place that truly suits your taste? On days I'm craving budae-jjigae in Dujeong-dong, Cheonan, Cheongwon Restaurant is still my top pick.
