Last Saturday for lunch, my husband Jaettung and I went to Myeonbbal Ttaenggineun Nal. We were looking for somewhere to eat near Daejeon Station and heard it was a popular lunch spot, so we decided to check it out. The portions were bigger than expected and the combination of charcoal grilled pork and milmyeon was pretty satisfying, so let me introduce it.

There was plenty of seating, and the overall vibe was clean and comfortable, like a relaxed neighborhood restaurant, easy to eat in without any pressure. I especially liked that each table had its own kiosk, so we could order comfortably without calling a staff member over.

There was a self-serve corner set up with napa cabbage kimchi, young radish kimchi, and pickled radish, so we could help ourselves to as much as we needed.

And they gave us a whole pot of makgeolli (Korean rice wine) as a complimentary service. The owner poured it into the pot for us personally, but since we're not great drinkers and it was broad daylight, we just tasted a bit — haha. Taking a sip, the carbonation was gentle and it went down smoothly. There was a mild sweetness to it, easy to drink without feeling heavy. Rather than a heavy, thick taste, it had a mild, clean style, so I think anyone who likes makgeolli would find it going down easily with a meal.

Beyond milmyeon, they sold a wide range of full meals and side dishes, and what stood out most was that rice was provided free from the self-serve bar. For people with a big appetite, that seems like a pretty satisfying perk.

On the table, pepper, vinegar, mustard sauce, and cups were all set out, so we could adjust the seasoning to our taste. And instead of plain bottled water, they served a savory barley tea or corn silk tea, which was so clean and tasty that I kept reaching for it throughout the meal. Personally, even a small detail like that was satisfying — haha.

The broth wasn't overpowering — light, clean, and cool. The seasoning wasn't strong, so it was easy to eat without feeling heavy right to the end, and if you want a bolder flavor, you can add vinegar or mustard to suit your taste.

Personally, the bibim (mixed, spicy-sauced) milmyeon was a bit more to my taste. The sweet sauce combined with a spicy kick kept my chopsticks moving. It wasn't just spicy — there was savory depth too, and it went really well eaten together with the charcoal grilled pork.

Milmyeon sauce was also provided separately, so if you needed more, you could add as much as you wanted, and the noodle portion was quite generous, so it was filling right until the end.

The charcoal grilled pork that came with the set was about 100g, and eating it alongside the milmyeon, the portion turned out to be quite generous. The pork had a subtle smoky char to it, so it was delicious even on its own, and it went even better paired with the milmyeon. Especially when eaten together with the bibim milmyeon, the sweet sauce and smoky flavor blended together and it tasted the best.
