## Looking for a fish set meal in Gagyeong-dong, Cheongju: why we chose Jeju Badang

Jeju Badang is a Korean restaurant in Gagyeong-dong, Cheongju, where you can get a proper fish set meal. I don't eat fish that often, but every once in a while I get a craving for it. Cooking fish at home means a lot of smell in the house, and buying just a little bit is always awkward, so I went looking for a fish set restaurant nearby and ended up at Jeju Badang in Gagyeong-dong.

## Where is Jeju Badang? 2nd floor of the JB Building, above Hanyang Gogitjip

Jeju Badang is on the 2nd floor of the JB Building near Gagyeong Xi Apartments. They don't advertise much outside, so you could easily drive right past it — look for the 2nd floor above Hanyang Grill! There's a sign in the elevator like the one in the photo on the right.

Right as you get off the elevator, turn left! Even though we visited around 2pm on a Sunday, it was busy enough that they asked us to wait a bit while they cleared a table. The waiting area feels like Jeju Island, which was kind of exciting. With a name like Jeju Badang, you can feel that Jeju vibe throughout the restaurant.

## Baby playroom and a roomy interior — and the one downside at Jeju Badang

Maybe because it's near an apartment complex, Jeju Badang gets a lot of families, and they even have a playroom ready for babies.

The interior! Really spacious. One small downside — since the tables are pushed together, if you're seated on the far side from the self-serve bar you have to go the long way around to reach it..?

## Spicy pork with the side dishes, plus self-serve chicken worth going back for

Right after we were seated, they set the table with side dishes. One of the side dishes was actually spicy pork!!! And the photo on the right is what we brought over from the self-serve bar.

This is the self-serve bar~ Most of the other side dishes were already set on the table, so we only picked up a little japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), chicken, and salad — but the chicken here is seriously excellent. The elevator flyer mentioned 15+ Korean side dishes at the salad bar and unlimited 'chicken' that everyone loves, and now I get why they bothered to call it out separately. It's genuinely crispy and delicious. With chicken on offer too, this place would work even for kids who don't love fish. Though the people piling their plates high with chicken looked mostly like men in their 20s-30s haha (truly loved by everyone, young and old, as promised).

## What the lunch special Jeju boneless hairtail stew for two looks like

But we came for the hairtail, after all. We ordered two of the lunch special Jeju boneless hairtail stew (제주순살갈치조림) with rice.

And here's the pretty spread it made. Between the side dishes and what we grabbed from the self-serve bar, the table was completely full. I'd assumed a table this big could seat more than 4, but with this much food coming out, 4 per table is probably the max..

### Boneless hairtail stew: no bones to pick out

Before we even got there, we were saying how nice it'd be not to have to pick out bones since it's boneless hairtail — and sure enough, there wasn't a single bone, so I think you could bring babies along and let parents eat in peace. Parents often have to check every fish bone one by one when feeding kids.. (my mom always picks apart all our hairtail and eats last, ㅠ)

Even as an adult, eating hairtail stew usually means constantly separating flesh from bone with your chopsticks, which pulls your attention away from the food — but since this was boneless, I could just eat it in one bite, and instead of ending up with mangled fish from all the bone-picking effort, I got to enjoy it in big satisfying bites. There's radish underneath the hairtail, and the sauce had soaked into it nicely, so it went great with rice, and the seasoning wasn't too strong either. There was also a good amount of hairtail, so much that between the rice and other side dishes you might not finish it all. So you really need to dig in and eat the hairtail properly.

## Is Jeju Badang worth it for a fish set meal in Gagyeong-dong?

If you're someone who occasionally craves fish but can't be bothered cooking it at home or picking out bones, I'd recommend giving Jeju Badang a try. I had the hairtail stew, but next time I'd like to try other Jeju-style dishes. And personally, I really do vouch for the chicken — worth a visit just for that alone..
