## In short

Manmok is a Japanese eel restaurant near Seonleung Station in Daechi-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, serving one dish only: eel rice bowl. A weekend visit meant about a 10-minute wait, then the whole-eel rice bowl arrived as a full set with salad, shrimp chawanmushi, side dishes, soup and dessert ice cream, and sansho pepper cut through the richness. Manmok is not cheap, but the meal felt properly looked after and worth a return visit.

## How long is the weekend wait at Manmok near Seonleung Station?

I visited Manmok, the eel rice bowl spot near Seonleung Station, over the weekend. We got seated after waiting about 10 minutes. It'd been a while since I'd had eel rice bowl and I wanted something restorative, so I went — and honestly it turned out to be a really satisfying meal. I worried it'd be crowded on the weekend, and there was indeed a bit of a wait.

### Manmok's stone tables and the cup tucked into the side

Once seated, I noticed the tables at Manmok weren't like a typical restaurant's — they were made of stone. Just looking at it, the surface seemed rough with the stone texture left intact, but when I actually touched it, it felt smooth! Even before the food arrived, the table itself already felt special.

Then I looked for a cup to get some water, but couldn't find one — I was briefly confused, until I glanced at another table further away and figured out where the cups were. Turns out, unusually, cups are tucked into the side of the table. If you're visiting for the first time, don't be as confused as I was — read this post and find your cup naturally, haha.

## Manmok's menu: eel rice bowl and nothing else

The menu board at Manmok, the eel rice bowl spot.

Manmok's menu was very simple: eel rice bowl and alcohol. The eel rice bowl comes in half, whole, or one-and-a-half portions, so you can pick according to how much you want. I tend to trust restaurants that serve just one dish over ones with a huge menu — it feels more professional and confident, haha.

Manmok's interior feels clean, tidy, upscale, and comfortable.

## What comes with the whole-eel rice bowl at Manmok

We ordered the whole eel rice bowl. After a bit of a wait, it arrived — and it came out with the lid still on. That just made the anticipation even better! My heart was racing wondering what was underneath before finally opening it up.

The moment I lifted the lid, the eel was the first thing that caught my eye. The color was gorgeous — glistening, glossy eel neatly laid over the rice. How could that not get you excited?!

Alongside the eel rice bowl, there were several neatly arranged side dishes: salad with sesame dressing, side dishes in the middle, and shrimp chawanmushi on the right. There was also a soup served with the eel rice bowl — I was told the exact name but don't remember it now, haha. Either way, it was a nice warm accompaniment. Overall it was such a tidy, well-composed spread that it felt like a proper full meal.

### Salad with sesame dressing and shrimp chawanmushi

I started with a bite of salad to wake up my appetite, sending a signal to my stomach that it was warm-up time, then followed with a warm bite of shrimp chawanmushi (savory egg custard) to really get things going.

The chawanmushi had a soft, pudding-like texture — I personally love that kind of softness, so I really enjoyed it. Especially the whole shrimp tucked inside, which added extra flavor when eaten together.

### One bite of eel and the sansho pepper kick

And finally, today's star! A bite of eel — yep, delicious. Placing a piece of eel over warm rice, the softness of the eel, the salty-sweet sauce, and the plain flavor of the rice all worked together nicely.

But as I kept eating, I started noticing a bit of oiliness coming from the eel itself. I remembered the staff mentioning sansho pepper powder, so I sprinkled some on — and that was the kick!

The sansho pepper cleanly cut through the richness of the eel, adding a fragrant, refreshing note! With eel rice bowl and sansho pepper alone, you could probably go for 2-3 servings.

After eating eel for a while, you inevitably feel a bit of oiliness lingering in your mouth. That's when I'd reach for the side dishes in between. Alternating between the cool, refreshing white kimchi and the slightly spicy, cool radish salad reset my palate each time.

Then another bite of eel. And another. Before I knew it, the eel was disappearing fast...!

## Dessert at Manmok: black tea and green tea ice cream

As we were nearly done with the eel rice bowl, the staff told us dessert ice cream was ready, and to call them once we finished eating.

We asked for one black tea ice cream and one green tea ice cream. The green tea one was tasty too, but the black tea ice cream was much richer and more delicious. The strong black tea aroma made for a great finish after the eel rice bowl.

### Restroom amenities at Manmok

After the meal, I went to the restroom and found mouthwash, dental floss, and various types of hand wash and hand cream all set out. I liked that they'd prepared mouthwash and floss so guests could freshen up after eating, and seeing the range of hand creams available made it clear they'd thought carefully about what guests might need. There was even music playing inside the restroom — the owner's little way of making things more comfortable, haha.

## Why Manmok is worth going back to

The price isn't exactly light, but enjoying a whole eel properly alongside salad, chawanmushi, side dishes, soup, and dessert ice cream felt like being treated to a proper meal — Manmok, the eel rice bowl spot near Seonleung Station.

There's also a solo dining table, so it's fine to enjoy the eel rice bowl alone comfortably. Personally, I was satisfied enough that I'm keeping this in mind as a place to revisit. If you're looking for a clean, well-put-together eel rice bowl near Seonleung Station, Manmok is worth a stop.
