Unlike a typical large café, it even has a rooftop, so I went out of curiosity. It was an easy walk from Exit 1 of Gangnam Station. But I was a little surprised as soon as I arrived: foreign visitors kept streaming in ahead of me. It wasn’t just one or two groups—seeing tourists continuously walk in made me think this place might be even more famous than I expected. It was certainly big, but the interior was colorful and cute, which immediately caught my attention. Here’s one Selected Nicks tip I picked up: I recommend finding a seat before ordering. Selected Nicks is spread across the 2nd, 3rd, 8th, and rooftop levels, but on busy days like weekends, it seems that not every floor is always open. On this day, it looked as if only the 3rd floor and rooftop level were operating. But it turned out that getting a rooftop seat was such a good choice. The atmosphere changed completely once I went up to the rooftop in the middle of Gangnam Station. Tall buildings were packed all around, but it still felt open amid that forest of towers, which was fascinating. As soon as I took a bite, I understood why I had heard this was a place known for cake. First of all, the cakes weren’t too rich. Even when a dessert tastes good, I stop reaching for it after a few bites if the cream is too heavy or it is overly sweet, but these were just sweet enough without feeling overwhelming, so they went well with coffee. I also liked that I could try all three of Selected Nicks’ signature cakes for the price of two slices. Of them all, the tiramisu was the most memorable, of course. The smooth, nutty flavor of mascarpone cream cheese paired beautifully with tiramisu’s distinctive flavor, and it was personally my favorite. I was glad I ordered the iced Americano, too. After a bite of sweet, soft cake, a sip of nutty coffee made my mouth feel refreshed, so I kept eating dessert. There were also small separate men’s and women’s restrooms on every floor, so I wasn’t particularly inconvenienced even while staying for a long time. Some large cafés are big but have awkward restroom setups, so having even these basics covered made it more comfortable to stay. This visit made me feel that Selected Nicks is more than somewhere to pop in for a coffee: it is a place to browse pretty desserts, take in Gangnam’s view from the rooftop, and pause for a while. Next time, I think I’ll come back not just for coffee but to buy dessert gifts around Gangnam Station.
