## In short

Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong is a fried chicken restaurant inside Gugyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk. A box of black garlic nurungji (scorched rice) dakgangjeong and two bottles of garlic makgeolli, packed up for a campsite dinner, kept their crunch from the first bite to the last thanks to the chunks of nurungji mixed into the sweet-salty sauced chicken. No cooking needed, just open the box — a solid fit for a travel-night dinner.

While figuring out what to have for dinner at the campsite during a Danyang trip, I stopped by Danyang Gugyeong Market. Wanting something you can only get locally, I sought out Danyang market's dakgangjeong (Korean fried chicken) and picked up both the black garlic nurungji (scorched rice) dakgangjeong and a garlic makgeolli.

> One-line verdict: the sweet-salty dakgangjeong got its texture kicked up by crunchy nurungji, and with the garlic makgeolli alongside, it felt like tasting Danyang all in one sitting.

## Finding the shop inside Danyang Gugyeong Market

On September 3, 2026, I went into Danyang Gugyeong Market to find the shop. Since it's easy to browse the market and then carry the food straight to the campsite, the route worked out well.

The shop is located at 31-1 Dojeon 4-gil, Danyang-eup, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea, inside Danyang Gugyeong Market. The phone number was also posted on the shop sign.

At the counter, you can visually compare the original and black garlic flavors. While I was looking over which one to try, the owner was friendly and helpful, which made choosing easy.

## Price and how it travels

At the time of our visit, the shop's signage listed the original dakgangjeong box at ₩20,000 and a set of 2 bottles of garlic makgeolli at ₩10,000. We picked up both the chicken and the makgeolli and headed to the campsite.

Being boxed made it easy to carry, and once it was on the campsite table, dinner could start right away with no extra cooking needed. After a day of running around a travel destination with no energy left to cook, this kind of takeout meal was such a relief.

## Why the nurungji was the real win

With the campsite forest as the backdrop, even before opening the box, the setup built around garlic — Danyang's local specialty — caught my eye. Setting the dakgangjeong and garlic makgeolli side by side felt like I'd properly picked out a local food.

Opening the box revealed dakgangjeong evenly coated in deep-colored sauce alongside chunky pieces of nurungji. The reason I liked this more than other dakgangjeong was exactly that crispy nurungji.

The sauced chicken was sweet and salty, and grabbing a piece of nurungji in between gave a clearly crunchy texture. The nurungji broke up the monotony that can set in from eating dakgangjeong alone, so I kept reaching for more.

The visible garlic pieces and deep sauce gave the black garlic version its own character, but the aroma wasn't off-putting or heavy. Eating the nurungji and dakgangjeong together in one bite was the clearest difference in this menu item.

## Garlic makgeolli — is the smell too much?

Just from the name, I wondered if garlic makgeolli might have too strong a garlic smell. In reality, you could tell garlic was in it, but it went down smoothly without any off-putting edge, and it paired well with the dakgangjeong's rich sauce.

Poured into a cup, it had a light beige color with gentle foam. Behind the sweet, nutty taste, a hint of garlic character lingered, and it was an easier flavor than I expected.

After a bite of dakgangjeong, drinking the makgeolli cleared away the sweetness and saltiness, and it fit the campsite evening mood well. It wasn't a flavor that forced the garlic angle — just enough to leave the impression of a local drink you'd have in Danyang, and I enjoyed it.

## Who this is a good fit for

This combo suited anyone traveling Danyang who wants to pick up market food and eat it as a campsite dinner. No cooking required — just open the box — and the two different kinds of crunch from the dakgangjeong and nurungji kept it interesting all the way through.

If you prefer chicken with more texture than the average dakgangjeong, you'll notice the difference from the black garlic nurungji dakgangjeong right away. As for the garlic makgeolli, contrary to my worry that the garlic flavor might be overwhelming, it was easy to drink.

The owner's friendly service left a good impression too. If you stop by Danyang Gugyeong Market looking for a dinner to eat at a campsite or lodging, try picking up the dakgangjeong together with the garlic makgeolli.
