## A terrace café with tree views near Gangnam Station

Summer's finally letting up and the mornings and evenings feel genuinely cool now, so fall is definitely coming ෆ ෆ ෆ Since afternoons aren't as brutal anymore, I've naturally been gravitating toward terrace cafés lately.

I went to Upper and Under, a terrace café near Gangnam Station where you can relax with coffee and dessert while looking out at trees, even in the middle of downtown Gangnam. It's a large dessert café near Gangnam Station tucked in the alley behind Gangnam CGV, running from the basement all the way up through the 2nd floor and out onto the terrace.

It's open daily from 11am to 10pm, so you can take your time with dessert and drinks even later in the evening.

## Entrance and 1st floor: floor-to-ceiling windows and outlets

Climbing the stairs at the entrance brings you to the register alongside a bakery display case and a refrigerated showcase with various cakes.

Even without sitting on the terrace, the indoor space has floor-to-ceiling windows, so sitting by the window is a great way to spend time looking out at the scenery. Every table has an outlet too, so it's handy for charging your phone or laptop — a good Gangnam Station café for laptop work or studying on a weekday afternoon outside mealtimes.

## What's the 2nd floor terrace space like?

Going up one more floor via the central staircase leads right to the 2nd floor space with the terrace. There's a large mirror there too, great for photos, and each floor has its own restroom so you don't need to go up or down separately. Table turnover was pretty good too, so seats opened up relatively quickly.

## At 6pm on a weekend, a lot of the bakery was already sold out

Upper and Under is a Gangnam Station dessert café with a wide range of bakery items and desserts, but when I visited around 6pm on a weekend, more bakery items were sold out than I expected.

I'd visited in the evening before without seeing this much sold out, so it seems like more people have been coming to this Gangnam Station terrace café now that the weather's nicer :) There's a good variety of baked goods like madeleines, financiers, and canelés, and cakes ranging from tiramisu to raspberry, lemon, Earl Grey grapefruit, and yellow cheese Basque cheesecake.

## What we ordered off the non-coffee cream drink recommendations

That day I wanted something creamy rather than coffee, so I asked for recommendations from the non-coffee menu. I was told the matcha pistachio and coconut matcha don't contain coffee, so I ordered the matcha pistachio, and my friend went with the peach oolong tea. For dessert we also ordered the tiramisu, plus the fig pie my friend recommended.

### Fig pie

If I'd come alone I probably wouldn't have picked the fig pie, but my friend recommended it so we got it to share. I'm so glad we did — it was seriously delicious! haha

Fresh figs were piled generously on top of the pie crust, and inside was fig jam, granola, and cream — the soft, chewy filling inside was especially delicious. The light, plain crust, the figs with their little pop of texture, and the moist filling all came together for a really varied bite that stuck with me :)

### Tiramisu

Upper and Under's tiramisu is also delicious — it's a dessert I always order whenever I come. This time it tasted especially good, and looking closer I noticed a bit more chocolate seemed to be added. Not sure if that's always the case, but the tiramisu I had this time felt sweeter and tastier than usual hahaha

### Matcha pistachio and peach oolong tea

The matcha pistachio had nutty, savory pistachios on top with soft cream and matcha underneath. You can enjoy a sweet, creamy drink without any espresso shot, which was nice on a day I wasn't craving coffee :)

My friend's peach oolong tea had a subtly rising peach aroma, an appealing tea that would be great to drink cleanly after a meal.

## A basement space like a separate annex

Beyond the terrace and the 1st- and 2nd-floor spaces, Upper and Under also has a more independent, annex-like space one floor down. It's quieter and cozier than the floors above, which makes it a good spot for laptop work or studying near Gangnam Station, and also a nice choice for dates or a blind date when you want a calmer atmosphere to talk in.

Each space has its own mood, so you can pick a seat to match your taste, and on a nice day the terrace is perfect for a relaxed coffee with dessert. If you're looking for a Gangnam Station dessert café to visit when you're craving something sweet after dinner, I'd recommend Upper and Under :)
