## In short

Yuil Jangeo is a large charcoal-grilled freshwater eel restaurant on Donggok-ro in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. Live eel costs 29,000 won per kilogram, picked by hand from the in-house seafood counter and pre-grilled before it reaches the charcoal table, and the table-setting fee is 4,000 won for adults and 2,000 won for elementary schoolers, including an unlimited self-bar with green onion kimchi, shredded ginger and perilla leaves. Two people ate their fill for about 50,000 won, so Yuil Jangeo is a great-value eel restaurant that also handles big group dinners.

Nothing beats eel for restoring your energy, haha. Eating grilled eel all the time can get pricey, but this large eel restaurant I found in Gwangju was so affordable — ₩29,000 per kg — that I got to eat my fill of grilled eel as a proper boyangsik (health-boosting meal). Let me review Yuil Jangeo, a private-room restaurant in Gwangsan-gu.

## Where is Yuil Jangeo and what are its hours?

## Parking and the look of the building

![Yuil Jangeo exterior and the private parking lot behind it](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar-02-993gl-900.webp)

Yuil Jangeo sits along the road to Naju in Gwangsan-gu. It's also close to Sangmu district, so it's easy to get to, and the private parking lot out back isn't just spacious — it's almost vast, which makes it great for family gatherings or company dinners.

## How ordering works: choose your eel at the seafood counter and pay first

![Ordering instructions for eel at Yuil Jangeo](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar-03-rq93j-900.webp)

Yuil Jangeo specializes in grilled eel, and the system is that you choose your eel from the seafood sales counter and pay, then it comes pre-grilled to your table. The table-setting fee and any extra menu items are paid separately at the end, on your way out.

## Menu and prices: live eel at 29,000 won per kg

![Yuil Jangeo live eel prices and menu board](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar-04-lm3ke-900.webp)

Live eel is ₩29,000 per kg, which is extremely cheap! Beyond good value — this is legendary-value territory haha. The table-setting fee is ₩4,000 for adults and ₩2,000 for elementary schoolers, and the side dishes are so generous that it's very, very worth it.

## Picking your own eel at the seafood counter

![Live eel tank at the Yuil Jangeo seafood counter](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar-06-9468u-900.webp)

![Plump freshwater live eel picked out by hand](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar-07-1elbn-900.webp)

So many fresh-looking eels! We picked ones that looked like a good amount for two, then were shown to our table. By the way, if you picked ones this plump anywhere else, it'd probably run you ₩70,000–80,000 — this is basically half price, hahaha.

## Inside Yuil Jangeo: a wide hall and 8 private rooms

![Spacious hall seating at Yuil Jangeo](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar-08-1ercp-878.webp)

![Interior of a private room at Yuil Jangeo](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar-09-1da8x-900.webp)

On both sides of the entrance there's a spacious, comfortable hall, and there are baby chairs too, so it would be great for family gatherings. We visited around 8pm on a Sunday evening and there were still plenty of customers — I'd heard Gwangju eel here is famous for being cheap and delicious, and yep, it lived up to it, hahahaha.

There are also 8 private rooms, and the structure allows the rooms to be connected, so it can seat up to 30 people. It seems like the perfect spot for a group dinner.

## What's on the self-bar?

![Green onion kimchi and shredded ginger at the Yuil Jangeo self-bar](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar-10-1d1ri-900.webp)

![Lettuce, perilla leaves, garlic, and various sauces at the self-bar](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar-11-139h7-900.webp)

On one side of the restaurant there's a self-bar with everything you need for grilled eel gathered in one place: green onion kimchi, shredded ginger, onion, garlic, perilla leaves, lettuce, wasabi, and various sauces. As someone obsessed with ginger, I love a self-bar where I can pile on as much ginger as I want without feeling self-conscious, haha.

## Side dishes and the charcoal grill setup

![Basic side dish spread at Yuil Jangeo](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar-12-4dxb0-900.webp)

They brought out the basic side dishes, and anything else you need, you just grab from the self-bar!

![Charcoal grill set up with one side left empty for grilling eel](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar-13-vh9gw-900.webp)

They deliberately left one side of the charcoal empty so we'd have somewhere to move eel once it was fully cooked. Really, a well-known Gwangju eel spot is thoughtful down to the details.

## Charcoal-grilled freshwater eel: how much you get for just over 40,000 won

The grilled eel arrived! Kyaaaaaah — for just a bit over ₩40,000, this much eel?! Is this real? So affordable and so touching, tears, haha.

![Pre-grilled freshwater eel on the charcoal grill](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar-14-1x8ug-900.webp)

It comes pre-grilled once, so it cooks quickly.

They stand the pieces up in a row to cook the sides well.

![Golden-brown salt-grilled eel](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar-17-1wyz2-1200.webp)

Golden-brown and delicious-looking salt-grilled eel! To really enjoy the natural flavor, unseasoned is definitely the way to go.

![A piece of grilled eel topped with green onion kimchi and shredded ginger](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar-18-v1khj-900.webp)

A piece of well-grilled eel topped generously with green onion kimchi, garlic, and shredded ginger as the finishing touch. Chewy, plump, and the charcoal aroma — I'm losing my mind, in the best way. Fresh straight from the farm, of course it can't be anything but delicious.

![Grilled eel wrapped in pickled perilla leaf](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar-19-1lv8z-966.webp)

Naturally, it pairs perfectly with pickled perilla leaves too. Wrap it up with shredded ginger and perilla and the table-setting fee doesn't feel wasteful at all, hahaha. And most of all, the charcoal itself is excellent, hahaha. Eel is really something you can never make properly in a frying pan at home — it absolutely has to be charcoal-grilled. Finding somewhere this affordable for eel is precious, truly.

![Seasoned grilled eel dipped in sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar-20-a9wmx-900.webp)

You can also dip it in sauce for a seasoned version — killing two birds with one stone, hahahaha.

## Free coffee after the meal

![Dessert drip coffee near the exit](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar/gwangju-hanam-eel-kg-29000-self-bar-21-1ju5j-900.webp)

There was drip coffee on the way out, perfect as a palate cleanser to finish the meal.

## Final verdict on Yuil Jangeo

Yuil Jangeo is a delicious, affordable grilled eel specialist where two people can eat until they're stuffed for ₩50,000. I'd also recommend it as a group dinner spot.
