## In short

Bakerist Brown is a large bakery café between Sinnonhyeon and Gangnam stations in Seoul, filling four levels from basement 1 up to the 3rd floor. Sitting with a friend on the half-basement level, the writer tried the 8-piece Gangnam Sand at 19,000 won, fig pavlova at 9,500 won, matcha madeleine at 3,800 won and a black sesame latte at 7,800 won, and the thickly matcha-coated madeleine was the surprise favourite. Bakerist Brown offers plenty of seating choice across its floors, though the staff service felt a little disappointing.

Whenever I meet a friend in Gangnam, choosing a café is always a headache. There are so many people around that even when we find a café we like, there's often no seat left, and more than a few times we've ended up settling for a chain café instead.🥲

This was actually the first time I really got to know this place. If my friend and I had known about it back when we were searching for cafés in Gangnam, I think we would have come at least once, haha. Since it's a bakery café, all kinds of breads and desserts caught my eye the moment I walked in. They also sold the wakppu salt bread that's been trending lately! With so many varieties, this would be a great spot to visit with a friend so you can each pick a different bread and share.

The display case had the 'Gangnam Sand,' pavlova, fruit croissants and more on show.

## Basement 1 to the 3rd floor: what are the seats like?

Bakerist Brown uses the whole building as its café, with seating split across each floor from basement level 1 to the 3rd floor. You order on the 1st floor, and the women's restroom is on basement level 1.

![Seating area on the 2nd floor of Bakerist Brown](https://img.superchart.com/images/bakerstreet-brown-basement-seat-matcha-madeleine/bakerstreet-brown-basement-seat-matcha-madeleine-10-1jxvg-900.webp)

After ordering on the 1st floor, I went up to check out the 2nd floor. The space was fairly spacious, with plenty of tables. My friend and I sat on basement level 1, and even though it was underground, it didn't feel cramped at all! You'd expect a basement floor to feel a bit stuffy or dim, right??? But basement level 1 at Bakerist Brown didn't feel like a true basement — it's more of a half-basement with windows letting you see outside, so it wasn't as stuffy as I expected, and it was comfortable enough to sit and chat with a friend for a while. It was also convenient that the women's restroom was on the same floor. Since the whole building is used as a café, the mood and seating seem to differ a bit floor by floor, so if you visit, it's worth exploring to find a spot you like.

## What we ordered at Bakerist Brown

Here's what I picked at Bakerist Brown that day.

- 🍰 Fig pavlova ₩9,500
- Matcha madeleine ₩3,800
- 🍪 Gangnam Sand 8-piece ₩19,000
- ☕ Black sesame latte ₩7,800
- ☕ Americano ₩6,500

### How was the Gangnam Sand 8-piece set (19,000 won)?

![Cross-section of a cream-filled Gangnam Sand](https://img.superchart.com/images/bakerstreet-brown-basement-seat-matcha-madeleine/bakerstreet-brown-basement-seat-matcha-madeleine-16-xjjxb-900.webp)

![Close-up of the strawberry-flavored Gangnam Sand](https://img.superchart.com/images/bakerstreet-brown-basement-seat-matcha-madeleine/bakerstreet-brown-basement-seat-matcha-madeleine-17-ozq5a-871.webp)

The first thing we tried was the Gangnam Sand. It comes in 8 flavors: matcha, black sesame, strawberry, gana chocolate, Earl Grey cream, white cream, peanut butter, and cheese cream. I'd read in other reviews that a card explaining each flavor usually comes with it, but there wasn't one when I visited, unfortunately ㅜㅜ

So it was fun to eat one at a time going 'what is this one?' and guessing the flavor lol. The butter aroma was stronger than expected, but even with the cream inside it wasn't too heavy, which was nice. Out of the 8, my favorites were the strawberry sand and the Earl Grey & white chocolate sand! The strawberry was sweet and tangy and paired well with the cream cheese, and the Earl Grey cream sand had a subtle Earl Grey aroma that went well with coffee. It was also great being able to try so many different flavors at once.

### Fig pavlova (9,500 won) and matcha madeleine (3,800 won)

The fig pavlova was my friend's pick 🍰, and the matcha madeleine was mine.

![Fig pavlova and matcha madeleine](https://img.superchart.com/images/bakerstreet-brown-basement-seat-matcha-madeleine/bakerstreet-brown-basement-seat-matcha-madeleine-18-1wmb6-900.webp)

This is the one my friend chose. The outside was crisp like meringue, and inside was soft cream together with fig. Overall it was a sweet dessert, but with the fig added in you could really taste and feel the fruit.

![Fig pavlova showing its meringue and cream layers](https://img.superchart.com/images/bakerstreet-brown-basement-seat-matcha-madeleine/bakerstreet-brown-basement-seat-matcha-madeleine-19-ksegt-900.webp)

I don't eat pavlova that often, so I didn't have high expectations, but the fig combination worked better than I thought.

And the one that surprised me personally was the matcha madeleine. Honestly I ordered it without expecting much from a madeleine. But when I tried it, the matcha coating on the outside was pretty thick, and the matcha flavor was stronger than I expected. It was one of those 'wait, this is actually good?' moments lol. The soft texture of the madeleine itself combined with the rich matcha coating made it more delicious than I anticipated. If you like matcha, I'd say don't skip this one — worth trying at least once.

### Black sesame latte (7,800 won), loaded with cream ☕️

I also tried the black sesame latte (₩7,800) for a drink. There was a generous amount of black sesame cream piled on top, so it looked rich just from the visual alone. Tasting it, I could really get that signature nutty black sesame flavor, and the cream made it a fairly heavy drink overall. There was caramel sauce layered at the bottom of the coffee too, so by the time you reach the end it turns sweet along with a bitter coffee note. We also ordered an Americano — with so much variety in bread and desserts, pairing them with a basic coffee depending on your taste seems like a good idea too.

## Is Bakerist Brown a good spot to meet a friend in Gangnam?

What stood out most about this visit to Bakerist Brown was that it's a large bakery café using multiple floors right in the middle of Gangnam! That said, staff service was a bit disappointing, haha. In areas like Gangnam or Sinnonhyeon, meeting up at a café can be tough just to find a seat because it's so crowded, but here, having space split from basement level 1 up to the 3rd floor meant there were actually options.
