## In short

Gyeryonggak is a Chinese restaurant with 30 years of history in Sincheon-dong, Dong-gu, Daegu, right across the street from Dongdaegu Station and Shinsegae Department Store. Visiting just after 6pm with two children and a fellow parent, we ordered cheolgabang jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles), a small deungsim tangsuyuk (sirloin sweet and sour pork) and lard ganjajang, and the open kitchen, self-serve bar and fast serving suited eating with kids. The spicy depth of the ganjajang fried in lard was the heart of Gyeryonggak.

A few days ago my son's friend, my parenting buddy, and I went to a bounce trampoline place and were planning to eat dinner on the way back, but Shinsegae Department Store was an absolute madhouse because of Ikea haha. So I looked up somewhere near Dongdaegu Station where we could eat something good with the kids, and Gyeryonggak (계룡각) across the street looked good, so we decided on the spot and went.

## Where is Gyeryonggak? Just across the street from Dongdaegu Station and Shinsegae

> Gyeryonggak

With room for up to 100 people at once, Gyeryonggak seems perfect for company dinners near Dongdaegu too haha. Why did I only find out about this Dongdaegu restaurant now, ugh! It's diagonally across from the department store, but it's tucked behind the building so you can't see it right away — a hidden gem of a Chinese restaurant in Sincheon-dong.

It's an open kitchen, so you can watch the chef wok-frying right over the flame — there's something fun about just watching it haha. It's entertaining, but you'd never have an open kitchen like this if you weren't confident about cleanliness. I think this is the first open-kitchen Chinese restaurant I've seen.

## Kiosk ordering, hair ties and the self-serve bar at Gyeryonggak

At Gyeryonggak you can order easily right from a kiosk at your table, and they even thoughtfully provide hair ties! If you write a photo review, they give you a drink not in a can but a full 500ml bottle — such generosity haha.

Gyeryonggak makes its noodles fresh in-house every single morning!! They knead the dough themselves each morning and carefully check the fermentation and texture to prepare the tastiest noodles ever, yesyesyesyes. And what I was really looking forward to — they stick to the old-school cooking method, frying the jjajang (black bean sauce) in lard instead of vegetable oil, so the flavor is totally different from regular jjajangmyeon!

With kids you have to cut everything up for them, but the self-serve bar had tongs, scissors, and small plates, so that came in really handy.

I ordered the cheolgabang jjajangmyeon for the kids to eat, the small deungsim tangsuyuk, and lard ganjajang to share with my parenting buddy.

## How does Gyeryonggak's lard ganjajang taste?

Gyeryonggak's popular menu item — lard ganjajang

![Gyeryonggak's popular lard ganjajang set](https://img.superchart.com/images/kyeryonggak-dongdaegu-kids-jjajang/kyeryonggak-dongdaegu-kids-jjajang-08-gl44v-738.webp)

A great ganjajang place = a truly authentic Chinese restaurant. Whenever I go to a Chinese restaurant I always order ganjajang, and a place that nails ganjajang is really a genuine Chinese restaurant gem.

Gyeryonggak's lard ganjajang has that great lard-fried flavor as a given, but the chili peppers mixed in give it a slight spicy kick that's the real hook. This might just be the true taste of adulthood haha.

## Korean sirloin tangsuyuk and how fast the food arrives

And Gyeryonggak's tangsuyuk is made with 100% domestic sirloin, so they fry up good-quality meat until it's crispy.

So delicious~~ Speed is everything at a Chinese restaurant, and I was nervous my hungry, noisy, smacking-their-lips sons might bother other tables. But how fast did Gyeryonggak's food come out? Insanely fast — we ordered and it arrived right away, which was such a relief since we were starving.

Quickly mixing up the cheolgabang jjajangmyeon and rationing it out to the starving little ones hahahaha.

## Why Gyeryonggak works for dinner with kids in Daegu

They gave us forks too, so my six-year-old boys managed to feed themselves just fine. The tangsuyuk sauce was sweet, the jjajangmyeon was delicious — Chinese food is a total win when you're wondering what to eat with the kids near Dongdaegu Station or Shinsegae Department Store. And the distance is just right since you only have to cross the street from the department store.

Turns out this isn't a hidden gem at all but a 30-year legacy Chinese restaurant in Sincheon-dong, Dongdaegu.

They're known for their lard-fried jjajang, and apparently they were the first in the country to have charcoal-grilled ganjajang and charcoal-grilled chicken jjamppong. I'd never seen charcoal-grilled chicken jjamppong before, so I'll have to try it next time with my husband. They also only use fresh, uncooked seafood, prepping it themselves and checking it carefully before stir-frying it with that smoky wok-hei flavor, so the fresh ingredients take the taste to a whole other level haha.

Because it's an open kitchen you can trust and verify the hygiene yourself, and when we visited a little after 6pm, we saw customers keep pouring in right after we ordered — I think that alone proves it's a proven local favorite.

On top of that, in this tough economy, they give away 30 free bowls of jjajangmyeon every month to elderly residents and other vulnerable community members. A shop this good really deserves to be supported, right???? There's also a coupon on Naver for 4 free handmade pork dumplings, so if you're planning to visit, use the coupon and enjoy!
