## In short

Hyangtaek Daebong Branch is a Korean restaurant in Daebong-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu, near Kim Kwang-seok Street. On a fine weekend lunch there was no TableManager wait at all, and the table came to yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef and rice bowl) at 14,000 won, herring roe bibim noodles at 13,000 won and a mushroom platter at 6,000 won, with just one spoonful of the seasoning sauce mixed in since it turns salty fast. Relaxed room, neatly plated dishes — Hyangtaek Daebong is the place to return to whenever Korean home cooking comes to mind.

On a beautiful weekend, I suddenly craved Korean food, and the place that came to mind was "Hyangtaek," a Korean restaurant famous near Kim Kwang-seok Street 😊 I've come here with friends and on dates too — the menu is clean and has some dishes you won't find elsewhere, so it's the place I think of whenever I want Korean food. It's near Gyeongbuk National University Hospital Station and Bangcheon Market, so it's a great stop while wandering around Kim Kwang-seok Street✨

![Entrance and TableManager waitlist sign at Hyangtaek Daebong Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend-03-17hts-900.webp)

They also use TableManager, so you can join the waitlist in advance through the app, but this time we got in with no wait at all👍🏻

## What does Hyangtaek Daebong Branch look like inside?

Inside, maybe because it was lunchtime, there were already lots of diners eating🙃 It had a cozy vibe, like eating in someone's home, with good natural light and plenty of tables — I felt like even with a wait, the turnover would be quick.

The kitchen, located toward the back, is an open kitchen so you can see right in — the dishware was neatly arranged and it looked hygienic, which I liked! There was also a door leading straight to the restroom from inside, which was convenient 🚻

## The menu and the signature dishes

The menu board shows rice dishes, noodle dishes, and side dishes with clean, easy-to-read photos👀 Just looking at it made my stomach feel at ease, everything looked healthy. ✔️The signature dishes were the mild spanish mackerel gondre rice and the sweet eggplant doenjang rice bowl.

And there was the pollack yukhoe mulhoe (raw pollack in cold broth), which was already sold out for the season. Apparently Hyangtaek's first-ever cold dish — I'll have to try it next year!!

Like last time I visited, I noticed the rice grains here are plump and fluffy, blending really well with the ingredients. Hmm... so Sindongjin rice is the good stuff... one more fact learned 🌾

Note to self 📝: leave a Naver receipt review and you get free hanpan mushrooms (weekdays only).

## Side dishes and how the table is set

The basic side dishes at Hyangtaek Daebong Branch were jeotgal (salted seafood), pickled gungchae, and gochujang-style seasoned laver, along with a warm broth soup. Wooden spoons for the rice bowls and bibimbap — very fitting — and true to Korean style, the water served was barley tea.

I thought the spanish mackerel gondre rice and eggplant doenjang bowl would taste great wrapped in the seasoned laver! They even kindly left a little instruction card haha — note to self: laver + jeotgal mixed with rice ~

## What we ordered and what it cost

- Yukhoe bibimbap 14.0
- Herring roe bibim noodles 13.0
- Hanpan mushrooms 6.0

### Yukhoe bibimbap, 14,000 won

Hyangtaek Daebong's yukhoe bibimbap comes with a nicely rounded, savory mound of raw beef tartare sitting on a bed of fresh lettuce🥩 The yukhoe was glossy and shiny, and the lettuce was so fresh it still looked alive 👍🏻

![Hyangtaek's yukhoe bibimbap topped on lettuce](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend-11-btld0-900.webp)

Order the yukhoe bibimbap and it comes with sauce and an egg yolk on the side. The yolk was so fresh, a bright yellow and perfectly plump 🍳

They told me the sauce can turn out salty if you add it all, so I started with a little and was told to add more if it wasn't enough — so I went with this much first! 😛 I put in about one spoonful of sauce.

There was so much lettuce it took a while for it to meet the rice grains lol. I mixed while gently breaking up the yukhoe — the portion was huge and the savory smell was so strong I couldn't wait to dig in 🥹

![Yukhoe bibimbap being mixed with a small amount of sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend-12-1hblw-966.webp)

![Bowl of bibimbap with yukhoe and lettuce being mixed together](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend-13-hhl82-900.webp)

![Yukhoe bibimbap topped with egg yolk](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend-14-mgzmr-900.webp)

After everything was mixed, in went the egg yolk — the finishing touch that doubles the savory flavor — and once mixed in, it was ready to eat!🤪 The savory, soft yukhoe paired with the fluffy, springy rice grains you could feel in every bite. The sweet-and-spicy sauce hit my taste perfectly, making it even more delicious👍🏻 A big spoonful filled my mouth with umami I couldn't stop reaching for😊

![Close-up of a spoonful of yukhoe bibimbap](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend-15-301ie-900.webp)

I decided to try wrapping the yukhoe bibimbap in the seasoned laver too, and it was great — first you get the crisp, thick, oceanic flavor of the laver, then the sweet-spicy, savory taste of the yukhoe bibimbap follows ✨✨ The bibimbap was so good I forgot about the laver at times, so next time I'll order the spanish mackerel gondre rice and pile on the jeotgal for an even tastier bite🐷

### Herring roe bibim noodles, 13,000 won

![A bowl of herring roe bibim noodles](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend-17-f5vi3-900.webp)

![Herring roe bibim noodles topped with beef brisket and perilla leaves](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend-18-jr4l7-900.webp)

For a noodle dish to pair with rice, I ordered the spicy-tangy herring roe bibim noodles🧡 Chewy noodles topped generously with beef brisket, perilla leaves, and herring roe.

Drizzled with perilla oil for a savory aroma, the noodles were glossy, and the spicy-tangy herring roe sauce mixed moistly with the noodles 💛 The sauce wasn't too strong, which I liked, and the pop of herring roe between bites with its salty flavor was the charming part of this dish😛

The savory beef brisket combined with the perilla leaf aroma made this the perfect noodle dish to enjoy alongside rice🤓

### Mushroom platter, 6,000 won

![Hanpan mushrooms served on a small plate](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend-20-1hfae-900.webp)

![Nicely browned hanpan mushrooms at Hyangtaek](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend-21-1g3eu-900.webp)

Since we came on a weekend, we sadly couldn't get it through the review event, but I ordered the hanpan mushrooms anyway since it looked light and delicious 🍄🟫🍄🟫 It had the feel of a nicely browned mushroom pancake — the plate looked smaller than expected so I thought the portion might be small, but as I ate, there turned out to be plenty of thick mushrooms, and I ended up stuffed..🐷

Nicely browned, crispy on the outside with a moist mushroom interior showing through. Loaded generously with various mushrooms, the crispy exterior made for a great texture🥰

![Cross-section of hanpan mushrooms with a variety of mushroom types](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend-22-4egys-900.webp)

Each mushroom had a different texture and flavor, so it was fun picking through them, and the distinct mushroom aroma felt like it was doing my body good✨ The chewy, savory mushrooms got more flavorful the more you chewed, and the accompanying sauce wasn't overly salty even dipped generously — sweet, salty, and delicious💛 Ordering it as a side dish was a good call.

![Dipping hanpan mushrooms into the accompanying sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend/hyangtaek-daebong-yukhoe-bibimbap-weekend-23-1s3p3-966.webp)

+ There was leftover laver, so I dipped it in the broth to finish it off😋
