The weather's turned noticeably cooler. Still a bit hot during the day, but mornings and evenings are crisp now... so naturally I started craving something warm and restorative. So I went to Wando Cham Jeonbokjip, a local favorite in Gyeongju, for abalone stew and abalone porridge. I'm a total sucker for abalone porridge haha.

## Where is Wando Cham Jeonbokjip and when is it open?

Wando Cham Jeonbokjip is at 48 Alcheonnam-ro, Gyeongju, right next to the Bulguksa Culture Hall. It's open 11:00–15:00, closed every Sunday, and also closed Sep 25–26 for Chuseok.

A friend told me this place was delicious, but this was my first time visiting. (There's roadside parking available nearby.)

## Inside Wando Cham Jeonbokjip: private rooms and hall seating

Inside Wando Cham Jeonbokjip there's a room-like space and a hall space. The room space looks great for group meals. The hall was full of people so I couldn't get a photo there, haha sorry.

## Is it worth ordering the small abalone seafood stew and abalone porridge together?

The dishes I ordered arrived: small abalone seafood stew and abalone porridge. Abalone seafood stew has the advantage of letting you taste a variety of seafood at once, so it's a great menu for seafood lovers. The abalone especially had plump, chewy flesh that got more savory the more you chewed, and the umami released from the seafood blended beautifully with the seasoning — I kept reaching for more. The seasoning wasn't overly aggressive either, more of a natural flavor that let the seafood shine through, which I liked even more since I personally prefer clean, mild food.

I ate the abalone porridge alongside the seafood stew. It has a different charm from the spicy, rich stew, so the balance between the two dishes was great. After whetting my appetite with the stew and finishing with warm abalone porridge, I felt like I'd had a really satisfying, hearty meal.

The abalone and octopus were fresh and bouncy — plump and chewy. The seasoning is what makes or breaks a seafood stew, and Wando Cham Jeonbokjip's sauce was genuinely delicious. It was gently spicy with a hint of sweetness, an absolute rice thief. Because the seasoning wasn't overpowering, you could really taste the natural flavor of the abalone and octopus, which I loved! I also love bean sprouts, and there was a generous amount, well-coated in the sauce, which made it even better. You know how good it is to just pile bean sprouts over white rice, right? ^^ I demolished a whole bowl of rice.

### Abalone porridge (jeonbok-juk): how does it taste?

I ordered the abalone porridge because I thought it would go well with the abalone seafood stew. I'm an abalone porridge lover.

I mixed the seaweed flakes and sesame seeds on top of the porridge before tasting it. Even though I love abalone porridge, I'm usually sensitive to fishy flavors — but this had none at all, just clean and mild. It's actually hard to find a place that makes abalone porridge well these days, so if you're a fan, I think it's worth a visit!

I fell for this abalone porridge from the very first bite... Clean and mild with no fishy taste at all, which I loved. The savory, mild flavor combined with the abalone's gentle umami was truly delicious 🤎

## Is Wando Cham Jeonbokjip a good restorative meal for changing seasons?

The balance between the gently spicy abalone stew and the savory, mild abalone porridge was great. Eating them together made everything taste even better... These days, with the big swings between day and night and the weather starting to cool down, you naturally crave restorative food. Abalone stew and abalone porridge fit the bill perfectly. I noticed a lot of people taking abalone porridge to go, too.

If you're craving abalone stew or abalone porridge, I recommend Wando Cham Jeonbokjip. It's right next to the Bulguksa Culture Hall :) 🤎
