I went and had seolleongtang and somoeri gukbap (ox head rice soup) at Hanwoojang, a place well known as a Jung-gu, Daegu favorite. You know those days when you just crave gukbap (Korean soup with rice)? That was exactly my day, and I'd heard Hanwoojang in Jung-gu, Daegu was really good, so I headed straight over haha.

## What kind of gukbap restaurant is Hanwoojang?

Turns out Hanwoojang has been selected by the Blue Ribbon Survey multiple times. That's not just word of mouth — it means the place has been objectively verified, so I felt confident and excited even before I walked in.

Getting a Blue Ribbon even once isn't easy, so getting it year after year is proof they've kept up consistent quality!! Knowing this wasn't some place that flared up with a trend and disappeared, but somewhere that's held its ground through years of proven skill, made the bowl I was about to eat feel even more trustworthy haha.

## Inside Hanwoojang: dining room and open kitchen

The first thing I noticed walking into Hanwoojang was how clean it was. Gukbap places tend to feel a bit worn and old, but here everything was tidy and well maintained, so I could sit and eat comfortably! The kitchen was also an open kitchen with a clear view inside, which added to the trust.

## How fast does the food arrive at Hanwoojang?

What surprised me after ordering was how quickly the food arrived. For a gukbap place, turnover really matters, and they clearly had that down. Waiting less while hungry made it even better. We ordered two things: seolleongtang and somoeri gukbap.

A lot of celebrities have apparently visited too lol. Looking at the signed photos and notes on the wall was kind of fun, and I thought — if famous people come here, the taste must be a guarantee. Places that only ride on fame can be disappointing when you actually visit, but the fact that people keep coming back here over a long time feels like real proof of skill!

## Is the self-serve banchan bar unlimited?

At Hanwoojang, staff set up the basic banchan (side dishes) first, and after that you help yourself to as much as you need from the self-serve bar. Running it this way is nice because even first-time visitors can figure it out naturally without getting confused! Not having to call a staff member for refills made things much easier, and being able to grab more at your own pace was satisfying too. With the self-serve bar well stocked, it seemed like a setup that keeps things easy for everyone even during busy hours haha.

![Kimchi and kkakdugi at the self-serve bar](https://img.superchart.com/images/daegu-jung-gu-hanwoojang-seolleongtang-somori/daegu-jung-gu-hanwoojang-seolleongtang-somori-12-lflzf-900.webp)

A gukbap place really needs good kimchi and kkakdugi (diced radish kimchi)! No matter how rich and tasty the broth is, it's a letdown if the side dishes are weak, but the kimchi and kkakdugi here were great on their own. The kkakdugi was crunchy and well-fermented, perfect for cleansing the palate between spoonfuls of soup, and the kimchi had a nice balance of tang and umami that kept me reaching for more. Alternating a spoonful of gukbap with a bite of kkakdugi was definitely part of the fun haha.

## How was the seolleongtang broth?

I tried the seolleongtang first, and the milky broth was rich yet clean. No gamey smell at all, just a savory broth flavor that hit right away — one spoonful and it felt like my stomach instantly relaxed ~~ Mixing the rice into it made it a complete meal on its own haha.

## Someori gukbap vs seolleongtang: what's the difference?

I also had the somoeri gukbap, and it was loaded with meat, so there was definitely fun in the chewing. The broth had a bit more depth than the seolleongtang. Seolleongtang comes with thin wheat noodles, but the somoeri gukbap doesn't.

The kkakdugi and kimchi balanced really well with the gukbap, the kind of taste that keeps your hand reaching back for more.

## Is Hanwoojang worth a visit in Jung-gu, Daegu?

Overall it was a satisfying meal. Clean restaurant, fast food, and the taste to match — it's the kind of place I'll keep thinking of and put on my Jung-gu, Daegu favorites list haha. If you're looking for a gukbap spot or a suyuk (boiled sliced beef) spot, I'd recommend giving Hanwoojang a visit. Both the seolleongtang and the somoeri gukbap were satisfying, so pick whichever suits your taste! The restaurant is located in Jung-gu, Daegu.
