Do you all like agujjim (spicy braised monkfish)? Haha. I sometimes get a sudden craving for that spicy sauce with a ton of crunchy bean sprouts. This time I was meeting up with a close friend to eat well and have a drink while catching up, so I searched for good spots near Bucheon Station and ended up at Haemul Teukbyeolsi.

I was curious because I'd heard this place had been on TV, and since it's boneless agujjim it's easy to eat and the portion was seriously generous — the two of us cleaned the whole plate, haha. It was also just the perfect vibe for now that the weather's turned cooler, so let me introduce it.

Walking in, I was a little surprised at how hip the atmosphere was. When I visited, the weather was cool enough that they'd fully opened up the front of the store. Even sitting inside, it felt just like eating at an outdoor night stall — the vibe was really great. Feeling the cool breeze while eating agujjim with a drink was a perfect match for this kind of weather! It's more casual and lively than your typical seafood stew restaurant, so it's also a good pick for drinks with friends.

We added octopus since there was a review event that let you add it at half price. The agujjim's spice level was also adjustable, and we went with mild so we could eat comfortably. Personally, picking bones out of fish or seafood is a bit of a hassle for me, so being able to order it boneless was really nice. I didn't have to worry about bones the whole meal — just grabbing big bites of bean sprouts and monkfish, which made it way more relaxing to eat.

While waiting for the main dish, the basic side dishes came out first — corn cheese, steamed egg, seaweed soup, and more, so our chopsticks were already busy before the agujjim even arrived, haha.

My personal favorite was the corn cheese! Popping corn kernels with savory, soft cheese, sweet and salty at once — absolutely perfect as a drinking snack. The steamed egg was also fluffy and soft, great for a spoonful in between bites of spicy food, and with warm seaweed soup on top, the side dish spread was quite solid.

After a bit, the hot stone collagen agujjim arrived! The portion was so generous that when it first hit the table, we both said at the same time, "Can the two of us actually finish this?" haha. It came out freshly cooked and piping hot so there was no waiting around, and thanks to the stone plate, it stayed warm for a long time while we ate.

Above all, the sauce was exactly my taste. When you think of agujjim, you usually picture something spicy, salty, and intense, but since we ordered mild here it wasn't overwhelming while still having plenty of savory depth. The sauce coated the monkfish and bean sprouts evenly without being too heavy or overly sweet, so it never got tiring no matter how much we ate.

The boneless monkfish was thick, springy, and tender. Since there were no bones to deal with, I could pile bean sprouts thick with sauce on top of a piece of monkfish and eat it in one big bite, which was great. The bean sprouts especially kept their crunch — that was the standout point! The contrast between the soft, moist monkfish and the crunchy bean sprouts worked really well together, and with the spicy-sweet sauce added on top, my chopsticks kept going back for more. And then there was the added octopus, too!

Eating the plump, chewy octopus coated thick in sauce gave a completely different texture from the monkfish, so I was glad we added it. If you like seafood, I'd definitely recommend adding octopus to make the meal even more generous.

One thing I really liked here was that flat dumplings (napjak mandu) come served alongside the agujjim! I put a piece of boneless monkfish and some crunchy, sauce-soaked bean sprouts on top of a golden-fried flat dumpling and ate it in one bite — and this combo was surprisingly delicious. The flat dumpling itself is plain, so it balances out the agujjim's spicy sauce, while adding a chewy dumpling-skin texture that gives a whole different appeal from eating the agujjim alone. I also piled octopus on there sometimes, and the flat dumpling + bean sprouts + octopus combo was great too! Once fully coated in the agujjim sauce, the flat dumplings disappeared in no time, haha. These small extra touches made this Bucheon agujjim spot even more enjoyable.

That day, I met up with my close friend after a while and we chatted over drinks, and agujjim paired really well as an anju (drinking snack). One spicy bite of agujjim, one cool sip of a drink, then grabbing some corn cheese in between — that cycle could repeat endlessly, haha. At first I figured we'd definitely have leftovers since the portion was so big. But as we kept picking at it while talking, at some point the stone plate was just... clean. That's how not-overpowering the sauce was — it kept us coming back for more until the very last bite.

Haemul Teukbyeolsi was a fun meal with drinks with a close friend. Being able to order it boneless made it easy to eat, and the soft monkfish with crunchy bean sprouts and savory sauce worked really well together — satisfying overall.
