## In short

Bossam Ae Kalguksu Seongnam Sangdaewon Branch is a bossam (boiled pork wrap) and kalguksu (hand-cut noodle soup) restaurant on the main road in Sangdaewon-dong, Seongnam, Gyeonggi. Ordering a small gabrisal bossam for two brought two servings of kalguksu and rice free, and adding two mandu (dumpling) dumplings plus a raw egg turned the leftover broth into egg porridge. The bossam arrived a bit cold, but dipping it back in the hot broth revived its moisture, making for a satisfying, budget-friendly lunch.

I went to Bossam Ae Kalguksu, located in the Sangdaewon Hangnyeon Shopping area. I first spotted this place while hiking up Namhansanseong Fortress — the idea that ordering bossam gets you free kalguksu and rice made my eyes go wide with curiosity. And then, wouldn't you know it, this exact place opened up in my neighborhood. It felt like a sign to go try it right away. So I visited, and here's my review~

## Location and accessibility

This Sangdaewon-dong restaurant sits right on the main road by Sangdaewon Hangnyeon Shopping, so it was easy to find without any trouble. There's also a bus stop right out front, so accessibility is great.

There are three set times when the meat comes out freshly boiled. If you time your visit right, you can get piping-hot, freshly boiled bossam. Unfortunately I showed up at 2:30 pm, so I missed the fresh batch. Oops.

## Interior and the solo-dining bar seat

Since it's a newly opened spot, the interior of this budget-friendly Sangdaewon-dong restaurant was very clean, tidy, and pleasant. The standard 4-person tables are spaced out comfortably, and there's also a single bar seat facing the window — great for solo diners or nearby office workers grabbing lunch or dinner.

## Order bossam, get 2 servings of kalguksu and rice free

This place is famous for giving you a choice of kalguksu or makguksu — served as two full servings of kalguksu — plus rice, free, when you order bossam. There's even a bossam set meal in the ₩10,000s that includes gabrisal bossam, kalguksu, and rice — an absolute steal, which makes it super popular for lunch.

There were two of us, so we ordered the gabrisal bossam (small).

On the wall there are instructions on how to enjoy the kalguksu and bossam. Everyone, read them carefully — that way you can enjoy it even more. I only read up to point 2 of the bossam instructions and stopped. Because of that, I noticed point 4 way too late.

### Basic side dishes and self-serve bar

The basic side dishes were green onion kimchi, napa cabbage kimchi, garlic, chili peppers, salted shrimp, and ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste). Beyond that, there's a self-serve bar, and you scoop your own rice too.

## Free kalguksu for two, ready in 6 minutes

Right after ordering our gabrisal bossam, two servings of kalguksu came out as a free service, along with zucchini, carrots, green onions, and noodles. We quickly added the ingredients into the bubbling anchovy broth, waited about 6 minutes, and ended up with moist, delicious kalguksu we thoroughly enjoyed.

## Gabrisal bossam (small): mild but a little cold

The small bossam. This place uses gabrisal (pork shoulder blade meat) instead of the usual front or hind leg, so it was very mild and lean — no greasiness at all. My only disappointment was that it came out a little cold. The napa cabbage kimchi was also packed with radish kimchi inside, so the portion was huge and satisfying — no need to add anything extra. We wrapped the bossam and radish kimchi in a napa cabbage leaf and ate it up.

### Adding 2 mandu dumplings

We added 2 mandu dumplings (₩3,000). I expected them to arrive cold, but they came out already steamed and warm, so I dropped them into the broth, gave them a quick boil, and ate them right away. They were completely packed full inside!

## A tip for when the bossam gets cold

As we ate, the bossam kept getting colder, so I dipped it into the kalguksu broth once, and it became moist again — that worked out well. I thought I'd come up with that trick myself, but it turns out point 4 of the 'how to enjoy bossam' instructions on the wall literally said, 'If the bossam gets cold, dip it in the broth to bring back its moistness.' Yikes. I totally missed that.

> A tip for enjoying bossam — if it gets cold, be sure to dip it in the broth to bring the moistness back.

## Finishing with egg porridge made from the broth

No matter what, the finale has to be carbs. So we got ready to make porridge. We brought over seaweed and sesame oil, and added a raw egg (₩1,000). My method — which honestly everyone probably already knows — is to scoop out most of the solid bits, add more broth, then throw in a bowl of rice, the raw egg, seaweed flakes, and sesame oil, and give it a quick boil. Porridge complete. It came out soft and really good~~
