Today, I had the Signature Set at Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada, a Mapo sashimi restaurant that was a nice spot for a family gathering.

Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada is on the first floor of Bonghwa Building, 104 Baekbeom-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea. It is about 81 m from Exit 3 of Daheung Station on Line 6, so it is close to the station.

Parking at Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada is difficult on site, so you will need to use a nearby parking lot. If you are visiting by car, it is best to check ahead.

We booked in advance. Our reservation sign, haha. Customers started arriving after we did, and the restaurant gradually filled up. Further inside, the tables are relatively well spaced, and there are seats that work nicely for dining with a larger group.

Especially when visiting with several people, it seemed like a great place to enjoy a variety of seafood dishes on one table.

There were fresh fish in the tank. The shrimp stood out the most. Haha, the shrimp are seriously huge.

Let’s look at the signature dishes at Mapo Bada, haha. There was everything from sashimi and seafood to grilled dishes and fried foods, so I briefly wondered where to begin. Haha. Rather than choosing just one dish, I think it would be more fun to come with a group and share a bit of everything.

## What comes with the Mapo Bada Signature Feast

This is the Mapo Bada Signature Feast. One table comes filled with all sorts of food: abalone innards porridge, grilled gizzard shad, sushi, fried items, wrap vegetables, assorted seafood such as abalone, sea cucumber, and scallops, plus sannakji (live octopus). The sashimi selection is especially varied too, with red sea bream, flatfish, rockfish, sea bream, gizzard shad, and raw shrimp. Boiled pork came instead of the cold pork dish, and personally, I liked the switch to boiled pork better. Haha. But because there were so many things on the table, I had to wonder what to eat first. I just started with whatever caught my eye, one by one. Haha.

I started with the abalone innards porridge. It was warm and smooth, so I was glad I ate it first. The grilled gizzard shad has bones, but I gently picked them out as I ate, haha. The sushi went well when I wanted some rice while eating sashimi.

Fried food should be eaten while it is warm too, haha. The fried shrimp was tasty, and the fried kabocha squash was crisp and soft, which I liked.

I first ate the sashimi plain, then wrapped it in the ssam vegetables. I try to eat everything evenly. From the assorted seafood—abalone, sea cucumber, scallops, and sea squirts—I tried the sea cucumber first, then the scallops, hahaha. The sea cucumber had that pleasantly crunchy texture and a taste that felt like the sea; after one piece, I kept reaching for more.

Wow! The sannakji stayed lively right to the end. It clung just a little inside my mouth, and I ate it with cho-gochujang (sweet-tangy red chili sauce) too. The ssamjang was so good that I kept dipping into it without even realizing.

Oh! I like the boiled pork better, haha. It was nicely tender, and I preferred the radish to the cabbage.

## The live salt-grilled shrimp I anticipated most

There were red sea bream, flatfish, rockfish, sea bream, gizzard shad, and raw shrimp. Such a generous spread, right?? I started with the red sea bream, then had a piece of flatfish and a piece of rockfish. There was more than I expected.

The dish I looked forward to most on this visit was the live salt-grilled shrimp! Since they were live shrimp, they were bouncing around so wildly when they first arrived. Haha, I almost felt like setting them free. Hahaha. They were not tiny shrimp either; each one was quite large, which made me even more excited.

Once they are placed over salt and grilled, their color changes beautifully and the shells become wonderfully appetizing. They stayed quite big even after grilling, haha. I peeled the cooked shrimp and ate them; the flesh was springy with a great bite. Shrimp really are love. 🦐 And of course, it does not end after the shrimp.

Fried shrimp heads! After you eat the shrimp, they take the heads and fry them in butter. Hehe! They were crisp and easy to eat. Having the crispy fried heads after the shrimp bodies made it feel like I had enjoyed the live shrimp dish properly.

The dish I remember most from that day was, of course, the live salt-grilled shrimp! I was startled at first by the live shrimp hopping around, but grilling the large shrimp in salt gave them such a springy texture, and being able to finish with crispy fried shrimp heads made it even better. The Signature Feast was great too, with abalone innards porridge, grilled gizzard shad, sushi, assorted seafood, sannakji, boiled pork, sashimi, and many other dishes arriving together. Being close to Exit 3 of Daheung Station is another plus! If you are looking for sashimi or seafood in Mapo, and need a restaurant for a family gathering or a larger group, Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada would be a good choice. 🦐 Next time, I want to add the spicy fish stew too. We could not order more because there was so much food, but I thought it would be nice to come back with the whole family and eat together.
