## In short

Yongju is a fusion Chinese restaurant and bar in Galma-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon. Ordering the ₩28,000 mala rosé xiang guo set with a half-and-half side of nurungji gwabaro (crispy nurungji-coated sweet and sour pork) and cream shrimp, the leftover rosé sauce got mixed into egg fried rice for the finishing touch. Even as a bar, Yongju turns out a satisfying, not-too-heavy neighborhood Chinese meal.

## A drink on the way home from work in Galma-dong

A great spot for solo drinking after work in Galma-dong, and a genuine Chinese food find.

## Getting there and the vibe

It's in Galma-dong, about a 2-minute walk in from the main road. Since it's more fusion Chinese than traditional, the interior has a different feel too — not the typical Chinese restaurant look at all, but a space with a real sense of the owner's taste. There are about 6 tables, so it's not too big and not too small, just the right size. I went with friends, and next to us another group was celebrating a friend's birthday with a cake.

### Why it works for friends and for dates alike

It was pretty fun watching the xiang guo get made right in front of us. At first I thought this would be great with a group of friends, but with the semi-open layout, it could work well for a date too. There's no awkward self-consciousness in the air at all, so you can just relax and enjoy yourself.

## ₩28,000 mala rosé xiang guo, mixed with fried rice at the end

The mala rosé xiang guo (₩28,000) is honestly really, really good. If you like the rosé mala at Yongyongseonsaeng, this rosé at Yongju in Galma-dong is a must-try. The portion is much bigger than Yongyongseonsaeng's and it tastes better too — a genuinely authentic mala flavor, clearly different from the chain. The rosé mala sauce comes out in a huge amount, so it's great for ordering extra dishes just to dip in. We came for dinner so we ordered egg fried rice as our carb, and mixing it into the leftover rosé sauce was seriously delicious.

### What was a bit disappointing

Since it's mala rosé, it's naturally a little salty, but it's far less salty than other places, so it goes down really easily. One small drawback is that, compared to a dedicated mala restaurant, the variety of ingredients is a bit limited. I love white tremella mushroom, so I was disappointed it wasn't included. Honestly, I wanted to take the sauce home and boil it up again myself.

## Half-and-half set side: nurungji gwabaro + cream shrimp

Nurungji gwabaro + cream shrimp. This came as a side with the mala rosé xiang guo set, and I noticed there was a half-and-half option for the side. I picked nurungji gwabaro and cream shrimp. The cream shrimp was delicious as expected, with a fresh-fried taste. No greasy off-smell at all, and the shrimp themselves were plump and tasty.

![Close-up of freshly fried cream shrimp](https://img.superchart.com/images/yongju-galma-dong-mala-rose-fried-rice/yongju-galma-dong-mala-rose-fried-rice-15-1qir5-900.webp)

![Nurungji gwabaro with its thick fried coating](https://img.superchart.com/images/yongju-galma-dong-mala-rose-fried-rice/yongju-galma-dong-mala-rose-fried-rice-16-8obn6-900.webp)

What I was really looking forward to was the nurungji gwabaro (nurungji-crusted sweet and sour pork), and when it arrived, the visual was pretty surprising — the batter was almost as thick as the meat itself. Thanks to the nurungji (crispy scorched rice), it was even crunchier and had a slightly cleaner taste. If you like the classic thin batter of gwabaro, this thicker nurungji version might not be for you. But I loved it — even with the thick coating, the crunch stayed alive, which felt like it doubled all the good things about fried food.

## A bar dish that also works as a full dinner: egg fried rice

The egg fried rice was great precisely because it wasn't too oily. It's not the really greasy egg fried rice you get at typical Chinese restaurants — it had a clean, homemade taste, almost like something your mom would make, which made it even better. Even though this is a bar, the dish isn't too heavy for dinner and makes for a plenty satisfying meal.
