If you're coming to Jeonju, spending a night in a real hanok (traditional Korean house) might just be the highlight of your trip. It was the part of this Jeonju trip I was most looking forward to. ## Where Haetsalgadeuk is and where to park on Hyanggyo-gil

The reasons I chose Haetsalgadeuk for my Jeonju stay: location, and easy parking. The center of Jeonju's Hanok Village gets crowded and noisy with tourists, but this stay sits just off the main street, so the whole neighborhood felt calm and quiet. Hanok really do suit that quiet, unhurried mood best.

Parking is always a worry with stays inside the village, but here there's a separate dedicated parking spot right next to the property. On weekends when the street runs as a car-free zone, you can use the free parking lot at the National Intangible Heritage Center directly across the way — it's barely a 10-minute walk, so no real hassle.

## The courtyard and wooden porch: what hanok living feels like

This is the view that caught my eye the moment I arrived.

Under the large tiled roof, several rooms connect harmoniously, and the courtyard had towels and blankets drying in the sun. The weather was so nice and the humidity so pleasantly dry that I just wanted to keep sitting out in the courtyard.

My favorite spot by far was the toenmaru (wooden porch). Sitting quietly on it, looking out at the courtyard, I could really feel what people mean by the pleasure of hanok living. The creaky old wood underfoot, the sturdy timber pillars, the roof tiles — they all gave off this strange sense of stability.

## Inside the Haedanghwa room: private bathroom and high ceilings

The room I stayed in tonight was Haedanghwa. Stepping inside, there's a tidy, clean room and an attached bathroom. Each room has its own private bathroom, which was genuinely convenient and meant none of the usual inconveniences you'd expect from a hanok. The space was much roomier than I expected, and the ceilings were high, so it never felt cramped.

These days it's rare to sleep anywhere but a bed, but here I got to lay out a yo (traditional floor mat) on the ondol floor — unusual, but surprisingly cozy. More than anything, opening and closing the traditional doors covered in rustling hanji (mulberry paper) was such a special experience I never get in everyday life.

## What's in the shared kitchen: coffee, tea, and a water purifier

This is the shared kitchen space. Coffee and hot tea you can enjoy anytime, plus a neatly set-up water purifier, meant I never had to worry about water during the trip. You could feel the owner's careful, tidy nature in every corner.

The laundry rack in one corner of the courtyard, drying slowly in the sun, honestly looked like a painting. The quiet courtyard view stretching out when I lay in the room and looked outside really made the hanok-living dream feel real.

## Walks from the door: Jeonju Hyanggyo, Omokdae, and Cheongyeollu

Jeonju Hyanggyo (Confucian school) is right next to Haetsalgadeuk, making it the perfect spot for a quiet early-morning walk before the crowds arrive. Walking slowly, you can also reach Cheongyeollu and Omokdae, which offer great views of Jeonju's cityscape and night view, and there are charming mural villages and cafés tucked along the alleys — the kind of pretty spots that just keep pulling you further on your walk.
