## In short

Gaetbeol-ui Jogae Yeouido Main Branch is a seafood restaurant in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul, near National Assembly Station. My friend and I ordered the medium giant clam hot pot for three and filled up on abalone, crab, shrimp, and an ever-richer broth. Verdict: a solid pick for seafood lovers who want a seriously filling meal.

The day I was meeting up with a friend who loves seafood. We both like things like sashimi and clams, so naturally we started looking in that direction again. We considered sashimi, but decided something with a warm broth would be nice this time, and that is how I found Gaetbeol-ui Jogae (갯벌의조개), which specializes in clam hot pot. In the photos, the pot was absolutely loaded with clams, so it looked pretty generous too. It was near National Assembly Station, and since it was my first time coming over here for a meal, I was quietly excited. So that day, my friend and I decided to go all in on a proper seafood feast, haha.

## The day I went looking for giant clam hot pot near National Assembly Station

It is about a five-minute walk from Exit 1 of National Assembly Station!

> A giant clam hot pot packed with all kinds of seafood in one huge pot

Once I reached the building, I could see the Gaetbeol-ui Jogae sign above, so finding it was not difficult. There are lots of offices around the National Assembly, and the building itself had that very office-district feel. It was a neighborhood I had never visited before, so it was fun having a look around as I walked over, haha.

![Menu photo display in front of the restaurant](https://img.superchart.com/images/yeouido-clam-hotpot-feast/yeouido-clam-hotpot-feast-03-14ict-966.webp)

There were large menu photos posted out front, so I could see what they sold before even going in.

At the entrance, there was also a model of a huge pot that looked like the real thing, heaped with clams and seafood. Seeing it packed full by type made me wonder if the giant clam hot pot we ordered would come out like this too, and my anticipation went up before we even entered.

Inside, there were areas where several people could sit together. The wood-toned tables and chairs were neat, and there were plenty of rooms with this kind of group seating. It seemed good for company dinners or larger groups too.

The main dining room also had a comfortable number of tables and seats. It would be fine for two people dropping in for a casual meal, but clam hot pot is such a good dish to share with several people. We visited around 7 p.m., and it was busy with friend groups and office workers stopping by after work.

## Ordering the medium giant clam hot pot

The signature dish was, of course, the giant clam hot pot. It came in small, medium, large, and special sizes: small was for two, medium for three, and large for four. Each step up in size added ₩20,000. You could also choose either a spicy or a clean-tasting seafood broth.

At lunch, they also sold meal dishes such as short-necked clam kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), cockle bibimbap, and spicy cockle rice bowls. Seeing that made me a little jealous... I wish there were a lunch spot like this near where I work tooㅠㅠ

There were four new drinking-food items as well: spicy cockle somyeon noodles, vinegared cockle salad, Gaetbeol samhap, and boiled squid. But we had already decided on the medium giant clam hot pot, so we did not deliberate for long, lol. There were only two of us, but we ordered the medium size for three! Starting at medium, it includes abalone, so we decided to make the most of it, eat abalone too, and restore our energy. 😎

### Yeolmu bibimbap made with free barley rice

There was a separate self-service bar here. We could bring back as many side dishes, fresh kimchi, and yeolmu kimchi as we needed, and unusually, they offered free barley rice too.

Add yeolmu kimchi to the barley rice, choose either seasoned gochujang or thick soybean paste, drizzle on a little sesame oil, and mix it up: yeolmu bibimbap done.

We could not just pass this by, so we made some too, but only took a tiny amount because we planned to clear that giant clam hot pot, lol. The pleasantly chewy barley rice with crisp yeolmu kimchi was perfect for waking up our appetites before the hot pot arrived.

## Seafood filling the pot and broth that grew richer

Finally, the giant clam hot pot we had been waiting for appeared. The size of the pot alone stole the show as soon as it hit the table. It looked big in the photos, but in person it was enough to make us think, “Can the two of us really finish this...?” lol. It initially arrived covered with a huge lid, and I was so curious about what was inside.

![Seafood hot pot with its lid opened](https://img.superchart.com/images/yeouido-clam-hotpot-feast/yeouido-clam-hotpot-feast-13-1ay5h-966.webp)

The owner kindly opened the lid once so I could take photos. Hehe. The second it opened, we both went, “Wow~,” lol. Fish cake, abalone, hard clams, scallops, clams, pen shells, shrimp, squid, fish cake skewers, blue crab, cheese, oysters, plus scallions and vegetables to deepen the broth—there was not an inch of empty space in that pot. Ah... it looked delicious just sitting there. I also loved that no one ingredient overwhelmed the rest; we could pick out and eat each type of seafood one by one.

![Assorted seafood inside the giant clam hot pot](https://img.superchart.com/images/yeouido-clam-hotpot-feast/yeouido-clam-hotpot-feast-14-oqzly-966.webp)

And instead of water, they served hovenia tea. Not many restaurants serve hovenia tea, and I really love little things like that, haha. We each had a refreshing glass while waiting for the clam hot pot to boil.

After a little wait, the pot began bubbling away. When we opened the lid, steam rose up and the clams were starting to open wide one by one. As the seafood flavors gradually infused the broth, even the aroma felt different from when we first saw it.

The owner even prepared the pen shell himself so it would be easy to eat, and explained that we should try the clams with the cheese on the side. Such a sweet owner..><

![Prepared pen shell and cheese](https://img.superchart.com/images/yeouido-clam-hotpot-feast/yeouido-clam-hotpot-feast-17-av841-966.webp)

Even looking at it again, it really was huge! Hehe.

![The large giant clam hot pot](https://img.superchart.com/images/yeouido-clam-hotpot-feast/yeouido-clam-hotpot-feast-18-fpo0c-966.webp)

Then the real seafood feast began. I tried the plump cooked abalone dipped in cheese, and the chewy abalone went surprisingly well with the soft, nutty cheese. We picked out clams one by one by type too, and I liked that they had been purged well—there was no gritty sand while eating.

When I first ladled out some broth, the seafood flavor had not fully developed yet, so I waited a little longer. But after it had boiled for a while and I tried it again, it was clearly different. Flavor from the clams, blue crab, and all the seafood had built up layer by layer, making it much cleaner-tasting and more deeply savory than at first. In the end, seafood, then a spoonful of broth, then clams again, then broth... I worked hard on that broth too, lol.

What I liked most, though, was the quantity. Even with two of us eating, clams just kept coming—I lost track of how many times we reached in. We would think, “There cannot be much left now, right?” and look in the pot, only to find more, lol. Of course, we had ordered the medium size intended for three people, so that may have made it feel even more abundant. For a normal appetite, the small would probably be right for two people; but if you love seafood and eat a lot like us, ordering the medium and eating until you say, “Wow, I am really full,” seems like a good idea. We chose the latter, and we were very happy. Haha.

![A plump shrimp seafood bite](https://img.superchart.com/images/yeouido-clam-hotpot-feast/yeouido-clam-hotpot-feast-19-11th6-966.webp)

A big, plump shrimp my friend peeled for me with love—yum. The meat was nice and springy, and it was so good in one bite. Thank you for the food. Hehe.

### The grilled corn cheese I discovered too late

Just as we were nearly emptying the pot, I suddenly spotted grilled corn cheese on the side menu. Why did I only see this now? We were almost done, but added one anyway, lol. Scooping up the warm cheese and corn together was sweet and nutty, a nice different flavor to finish after all the seafood. We said we were full and still wiped this out too—honestly, impressive of us.

![Hair ties, dental floss, and mouthwash amenities](https://img.superchart.com/images/yeouido-clam-hotpot-feast/yeouido-clam-hotpot-feast-21-18ttg-966.webp)

On the way out to pay, I found one more thing. They had put out hair ties, dental floss, and mouthwash on one side. Hair ties for anyone bothered by their hair while eating, floss and mouthwash for after the seafood, and even candies for a final palate cleanse. From personally preparing the pen shell and explaining how to eat it to these little amenities, it felt like the owner had thoughtfully considered all sorts of things from the guest’s point of view.

## Wrapping up after eating all the seafood we wanted

I first came to Gaetbeol-ui Jogae because my friend and I wanted to eat lots of seafood, but once we tried it, it was fun choosing from so many kinds in the big pot, from clams and abalone to blue crab, shrimp, and squid. What I remember most is continuously ladling up the clean, flavorful broth after the seafood had cooked through, lol. The portions were generous enough that the two of us left properly full, and it was also nice that the staff helped prepare the seafood for us. If you are looking for a hearty seafood restaurant or a warm clam hot pot to share with friends near the National Assembly, I think Gaetbeol-ui Jogae is a solid choice.
