## In short

Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is a gyukatsu (Japanese-style beef cutlet) restaurant 29 meters from Exit 1 of Mapo Station, on basement level 1 of the Obelisk apartment shopping arcade in Mapo, Seoul. Two gyukatsu fans ordered the yakiniku set for two, listed at 47,000 won on the menu that day, which came with a smoked gyukatsu sirloin set, a smoked yakiniku sirloin set, gamtae myeongran (pollock roe with seaweed) and drinks. Between the woodfire smoke aroma and the house-made myeong-i wasabi and radish salad, Gyudo is worth a check if gyukatsu is your thing.

## Finding Gyudo: 29m from Mapo Station Exit 1, basement level 1 of the Obelisk

It's only about 29 meters from Mapo Station Exit 1, so it's easy to find. It's on the basement floor of the Obelisk commercial building, and even I, who gets lost easily, found it without much trouble.

## How Gyudo's menu differs from a typical gyukatsu restaurant

Looking at the menu, Gyudo is a bit different from a typical gyukatsu restaurant. It bills itself as Korea's only premium gyukatsu spot, and it says it uses custom-made bangjja yugi (hand-forged brassware). The menu also notes its woodfire smoking method using an offset smoker as a signature feature.

Best of all, the myeong-i wasabi (wild garlic wasabi), all the sauces, and even the radish salad are made in-house, so it was fun to taste each one as the food came out.

There were also personal drawers, custom-made cutlery pouches, and topping-flake bags set at the table, which made the tabletop feel pretty tidy and organized.

## What comes with the 47,000 won yakiniku set for two

What we ordered that day was the yakiniku set for two. It's originally ₩50,000, but at the time it was listed at ₩47,000 on the menu. The set included smoked gyukatsu sirloin set + smoked yakiniku sirloin set + gamtae myeongran + a drink.

I love gyukatsu, but I also wanted to try the yakiniku together that day, so I picked this menu. The portions were substantial enough for two people to share.

## How the smoked gyukatsu, yakiniku and gamtae myeongran tasted

Once the food arrived, the table was more generous than I expected. Warm rice came with the gyukatsu and yakiniku each served as their own set, plus side dishes and sauces to pair with them, so we tried mixing and matching.

The gamtae myeongran in particular kept drawing my chopsticks. Eating gyukatsu alone for too long can get a little heavy, but pairing it with the seaweed and pollock roe completely changed the flavor, so it was great to alternate with it here and there.

Maybe because the meat was smoked, it had a different aroma from typical gyukatsu, and the yakiniku was well grilled — eating it with rice felt familiar yet delicious.

If you like gyukatsu, you probably know that even the same dish can feel quite different depending on the condition of the meat, the batter, and the sauce. That's why I make a point of trying new gyukatsu places myself whenever I find one, and this time felt like I'd added another fun spot to the list.

Being right near Mapo Station, it seems convenient if you're looking for a lunch spot around Mapo Station or Gongdeok Station, or a dinner spot. With options beyond gyukatsu — donkatsu and yakiniku too — it seemed like a good pick even if you're dining with someone whose tastes differ from yours.
