## In short

Ilpum Gangnam Branch is a kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) and sushi restaurant on the basement level near Exit 6 of Gangnam Station in Seocho, Seoul. The kaisendon arrives with a little of everything on top — salmon, tuna, whitefish and flying fish roe — while the saba bo sushi is thick, lightly seared mackerel, and chawanmushi and yogurt pudding make the meal feel like a small omakase. Ilpum finally put to rest the idea that kaisendon in Korea is never worth the price.

I really, really love sashimi normally, but I always worried whether kaisendon in Korea would actually be worth the money, so I'd usually stick to aged sashimi or sushi instead. Then I saw Ilpum, a kaisendon spot I'd saved from social media, had a branch near Gangnam Station too, so I went to check it out.

Whenever I'm picking a place for a date near Gangnam Station, it's always either bars everywhere or places with nice vibes but poor value, so I never have quite enough decent options. This time, Ilpum Gangnam Branch impressed me on everything from atmosphere to food quality, so I wanted to share it! Here's my rundown for anyone looking for a solid Japanese restaurant near Gangnam Station — solo diners, dates, blind dates, or company dinners alike.

## Which Gangnam Station exit, plus parking and the look of the restaurant

Ilpum Gangnam Branch, a kaisendon spot near Exit 6 of the Sinbundang Line at Gangnam Station, is reached by heading down to the basement level from the spot shown in the photo. It's genuinely close to Gangnam Station, making it perfect for meeting up after work! You can reserve in advance through Naver Place, and I did that before visiting.

Parking is available. Parking near Gangnam Station is often a headache when arranging to meet someone, so having 1 hour of free parking took a lot of the pressure off.

Inside, it's arranged around warm wood tones, giving it a calmer, more upscale feel than your typical casual sushi place. Solo diners or reservations for two are seated at the bar, which has an omakase-like atmosphere that my friend really appreciated too! There's table seating further inside as well, and quite a few groups were dining there.

Overall it didn't feel crowded or chaotic, so it was easy to focus on the food and conversation. If you're looking for a Japanese restaurant near Gangnam Station that's neither too casual nor stiffly formal, this place has a good balance.

## Ilpum's menu and Naver reservation perks

Reserving through Naver gets pregnant guests and birthday guests 2 extra pieces of sushi. There's also free corkage and a complimentary croquette, so if you're planning to visit Ilpum, I'd definitely recommend booking through Naver!! Note that seating is only limited to 1 hour 30 minutes from your reservation time if there's a wait.

![Chawanmushi with shrimp inside](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-ilpum-kaisendon-sababou-sushi/gangnam-ilpum-kaisendon-sababou-sushi-14-1r2ph-966.webp)

Ordering is done by scanning the QR code on the table, and each table has its own water dispenser, which was convenient. After ordering, miso soup, chawanmushi (savory egg custard), and pickled ginger came out first. The chawanmushi was cooked wonderfully smooth, and it even had shrimp in it, which made it surprisingly filling.

## What is in the kaisendon at Ilpum, and how it tastes

The kaisendon at Ilpum Gangnam Branch isn't the style with a big pile of just one kind of sashimi — instead it's a mix of many types of seafood, each in smaller portions. It came with salmon, whitefish, tuna, shrimp, squid, and flying fish roe, plus egg, seaweed, and gamtae (sea lettuce), making for a surprisingly full bowl.

![Kaisendon garnished with flying fish roe and egg](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-ilpum-kaisendon-sababou-sushi/gangnam-ilpum-kaisendon-sababou-sushi-16-o1kji-966.webp)

![Seafood rice bowl served with seaweed and gamtae](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-ilpum-kaisendon-sababou-sushi/gangnam-ilpum-kaisendon-sababou-sushi-17-akmok-966.webp)

![Close-up of kaisendon showing shrimp and squid](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-ilpum-kaisendon-sababou-sushi/gangnam-ilpum-kaisendon-sababou-sushi-18-3fdu0-966.webp)

![A large spoonful of kaisendon](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-ilpum-kaisendon-sababou-sushi/gangnam-ilpum-kaisendon-sababou-sushi-19-1uj7h-966.webp)

I personally care more about the variety and quality of the seafood than just the sheer amount, and Ilpum's bowl let me compare several flavors within a single dish, which was fun. It was also easy to mix and match bites to my taste, and the seaweed and gamtae added a nutty depth that made the whole meal feel more polished.

The salmon had a nice fattiness that made it soft and rich, while the whitefish held its firm, chewy texture without falling apart. The tuna was tender yet clean-tasting, and with the shrimp and squid adding springy bites here and there, plus the flying fish roe on top, this kaisendon completely erased my old assumption that Korean kaisendon isn't worth the money. Sharing it did require some strategic negotiating though, since the sashimi pieces don't come in neat pairs of two.

## How was the seared saba bo sushi?

![Saba bo sushi topped with a thick cut of mackerel](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-ilpum-kaisendon-sababou-sushi/gangnam-ilpum-kaisendon-sababou-sushi-20-10n8t-966.webp)

The saba bo sushi we ordered alongside it had a thicker cut of mackerel than I expected, and a generous amount too. The surface was lightly seared, so the mackerel's characteristic rich fattiness came through first along with a subtle smoky char. Mackerel is a naturally oily fish that can end up with an overpowering smell if not handled well, but here the fishiness didn't linger at all!

![Yogurt pudding served for dessert](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-ilpum-kaisendon-sababou-sushi/gangnam-ilpum-kaisendon-sababou-sushi-22-1jyvf-966.webp)

The yogurt pudding served for dessert was exactly my kind of thing and cleansed the palate perfectly, rounding the meal off with a proper omakase feel.

## Is Ilpum Gangnam Branch worth it? Final verdict

Ilpum Gangnam Branch is a place I'd recommend for anyone near Gangnam Station looking for a kaisendon spot where you can enjoy a wide variety of seafood in one bowl. Each ingredient in the kaisendon had a clearly distinct texture, and the saba bo sushi's thick, fatty mackerel with its subtle smoky char especially stuck with me.

Considering the overall composition, the range of seafood, and how well-executed the food was, I didn't walk away feeling like the price wasn't worth it at all!! If you're looking for a good sushi spot, a proper kaisendon place, or somewhere for a date near Gangnam Station, this is worth a visit.
