## In short

Boseung Hoegwan Cheonho Station Branch is a 24-hour gukbap (rice-and-soup) and haejangguk restaurant near Cheonho Station in Gangdong, Seoul. On a Sunday morning, before my son left to study, the two of us ordered the sundae and pork jowl set at Boseung Hoegwan (16,000 won per person, minimum two people), with my son choosing sundaeguk and me the intestine gukbap. Between the spicy intestine gukbap and rice soaked in the boiled-pork broth, one meal at Boseung Hoegwan tasted like two bowls of gukbap.

## Where to eat gukbap early on a Sunday morning near Cheonho Station

On a Sunday morning I was looking for somewhere to eat near Cheonho Station and ended up at the 24-hour Boseung Hoegwan Cheonho Station Branch. Apparently one upside for my son of fighting with his mom is that he goes off to study at a study café bright and early on Sunday mornings now? Haha.

Whatever the reason, I couldn't send a kid off to study on a Sunday morning with an empty stomach. Still wanting to eat together before he left, I looked for somewhere to have breakfast near home. Turns out restaurants open on Sunday mornings are genuinely rare. Something I'd never noticed before, but trying to find one meal made it obvious.

![Exterior of Boseung Hoegwan Cheonho Station Branch showing its 24-hour sign](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonho-sunday-morning-gukbap-boseung/cheonho-sunday-morning-gukbap-boseung-01-9fcg5-m-966.webp)

That's how I found Boseung Hoegwan, a haejangguk (hangover soup) place near Cheonho Station. I'd passed the sign countless times but never imagined I'd walk in for breakfast... haha. Boseung Hoegwan is open 24 hours.

Seeing the '24 hours' sign brought back old memories. Back when I drank a lot, there were plenty of nights that ended with 'shall we grab a haejangguk before heading home?' — which really just meant one more drink at the soup place. Knowing a few late-night haejangguk spots was practically a requirement back then. Looking back, I'm not sure if I went there to cure a hangover or to keep drinking... haha.

This area around Boseung Hoegwan isn't really a nightlife district, so I'm not sure how many late-night drinkers come through, but there were plenty of customers early in the morning. Glancing around, none of them looked like they'd been out drinking all night — more like people starting their day early. Everyone's quite industrious for a Sunday morning.

## Sundae and pork jowl set at Boseung Hoegwan: 16,000 won per person, soup chosen separately

What we ordered at Boseung Hoegwan was the sundae and pork jowl set, which requires a minimum of two people, priced at ₩16,000 per person. The set also lets you choose your gukbap, so my son picked sundaeguk and I picked intestine gukbap. Time for a proper breakfast~!!

Shortly after, they laid out the basic gukbap-restaurant side dishes — kkakdugi (diced radish kimchi), geotjeori (fresh cabbage kimchi), and chives~

## Pork jowl, sundae and a milky broth on the platter

Then came the pork jowl and sundae (Korean blood sausage) included in the set. Maybe because it was for two, it looked more generous than I expected — pork jowl slices neatly arranged over a milky broth, with an assortment of sundae piled up in the middle. As soon as it arrived, they started boiling it right at the table. I wondered, 'does it come out cold and get heated up?' so I touched it — already warm. No reason to wait then. Haha.

I grabbed a piece of sundae right away. Savory and moist. Some sundae had chewy glass noodles inside, others were packed with meat, so picking through them one by one was fun. The meat-filled sundae especially had a solid, hearty filling.

After a piece of sundae, I tried a spoonful of the milky broth underneath — wow, this broth is the real deal too. I thought it was just there to keep the sundae and pork warm, but it's savory and rich enough to drink on its own. The kind of flavor that warms you up from the inside first thing in the morning. And the gukbap hadn't even arrived yet... already craving a bowl of rice.

## Intestine gukbap at Boseung Hoegwan comes with the chili paste already stirred in

While waiting, my intestine gukbap finally arrived. I stirred through it with a spoon first. Not an enormous amount, but enough offal to not feel shortchanged. I missed seeing my favorite makchang (grilled pork intestines), but overall there was a decent variety mixed in. If you like intestines, you know the fun of a gukbap like this is fishing out something different with every stir. And the chili paste (dadegi) is already mixed in from the start, so you just need to stir it well rather than add your own.

After stirring, the milky broth quickly turned into an appetizing orange. I added chives on top and dropped in half a bowl of rice first, letting the rice grains soak up the hot broth until the starchiness spread a little.

Meanwhile, a bite of the pork jowl from the set. Even in the photo, the lean meat and fat looked well-balanced and moist. One bite, followed immediately by a piece of geotjeori — the spicy, tangy kimchi cuts right through the savory pork jowl. Boiled pork really does need kimchi.

Alright, time for a spoonful of the broth. Even though it's intestine gukbap, there's barely any of that distinctive gamey intestine smell. The chili paste dissolved in and added heat, but the spice doesn't overpower everything either. Underneath is a rich, savory broth base with a nutty perilla seed flavor layered in, filling the mouth quite substantially. One spoonful of hot broth first thing in the morning, and my stomach already felt like it was settling. I hadn't even had a drink, but it felt like a hangover cure anyway. Haha.

## Rice in the pork broth: two kinds of gukbap in one meal

I also mixed the rice I'd saved into the milky broth the pork jowl and sundae had been sitting in. This broth was too good to just leave behind. The rice grains soaked up all that broth, giving it the feel of a light pork gomtang (bone broth soup). A spoonful of spicy intestine gukbap, then a spoonful of rice soaked in the milky, savory pork broth. It felt like eating two kinds of gukbap in one meal.

![Rice split between two different broths](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonho-sunday-morning-gukbap-boseung/cheonho-sunday-morning-gukbap-boseung-16-16738-676.webp)

And from here, my usual gukbap routine kicks in — throwing kimchi straight into the soup. Not a whole pile at once, just adding it bit by bit and eating it along with the rice. As you go, the seasoning and juice from the kimchi slowly seep into the soup, changing the flavor from what you tasted at first. A piece of chive on top, a piece of intestine, and a well-ripened kkakdugi piled onto a big spoonful. Isn't this what eating gukbap is really about?

![A spoonful of intestine gukbap with kimchi added](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonho-sunday-morning-gukbap-boseung/cheonho-sunday-morning-gukbap-boseung-17-1838g-508.webp)

Adding geotjeori on top and scooping up rice and intestine together, it's hot, savory, and spicy all at once — a very filling Sunday morning. Turns out a savory gukbap doesn't care what time it is. Even in the morning... it makes you want a shot of soju. Haha.

Now it's the turn of the rice soaked in the milky broth from the pork jowl. Topping it with a well-warmed piece of pork jowl and a piece of kkakdugi, and taking a big bite — whoa, this is really something. The rice, softened in the savory broth infused with the pork jowl's flavor, comes together with the moist lean meat and savory fat of the pork jowl. Add the tangy, crunchy kkakdugi on top, and it's basically like making a small bowl of pork gukbap on the side. I got to eat a spicy intestine gukbap and enjoy something like a milky pork gukbap too... ordering one set turned into two dishes. Haha. Guess I don't need to order pork gukbap separately anymore.

## Breakfast with my son, and why pork gukbap is next at Boseung Hoegwan

My son, eating beside me, said the pork jowl was delicious. That got me curious. 'Have you ever had pork gukbap?' Turns out he'd never had it. What? I thought he'd tagged along for pretty much everything his dad ate, but there's still something he hasn't tried? Haha.

Well, good then. Next time, for the sake of expanding his food experience, we're going for a proper bowl of pork gukbap. I thought the list of foods we could try together was shrinking as he grew up, but finding out there's still something left is quietly nice, as a dad.

![A bite of pork jowl topped with geotjeori](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonho-sunday-morning-gukbap-boseung/cheonho-sunday-morning-gukbap-boseung-22-1qxsr-508.webp)

A piece of pork jowl piled generously with geotjeori, one bite~ A gukbap restaurant really does need good kimchi. No matter how good the gukbap itself is, if the kimchi's off, that last little bit is missing. At Boseung Hoegwan, geotjeori suited my taste more than kkakdugi. The crunch of the just-right cabbage with its spicy seasoning cut right through the richness of the pork jowl.

With the gukbap finished off and the pork jowl and sundae cleaned up neatly, Sunday breakfast was done. Thanks to my son fighting with his mom and heading off to study early, we ended up with an unexpected breakfast outing. He probably just wanted to eat fast and get to the study café, but thanks to him, I got to sit across from my son and share a hot bowl of gukbap. It would've been an unremarkable Sunday morning where I'd normally sleep in, but sharing this one meal together left us with another small memory.

And a new fact I learned: my son still hasn't had pork gukbap. Haha. So the next menu is decided. Studying matters, but building up his food experience matters too. Next Sunday morning, we're heading out for a proper bowl of pork gukbap with my son~!
