## In short

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a bunsik (Korean snack food) restaurant in a Yongridan-gil alley, an 8-minute walk from Sinyongsan Station Exit 6. After a walk around Haebangchon, we ordered the Hyeonseon Combo Set — tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), mini gimbap, sundae (blood sausage), fish cake skewers and assorted fritters — and it was far too much for two, so the rest went home in takeout boxes. The tteokbokki at Hyeonseonine is classic tent-stall style, mild rather than fiery, and we kept reaching for one more piece.

I went sightseeing in Seoul a while back after ages of not going anywhere, haha. I've been turning into such a homebody lately that I figured I'd better make the effort, so I tagged along with my friend, who's basically a hotspot expert, to Haebangchon.

After wandering around all day looking at things, I got hungry and finally went to Hyeonseonine, a Yongsan tteokbokki spot I'd wanted to try for a while. I heard it usually has long waits, so I thought we might not get a table, but luckily there was exactly one seat left — got in with zero wait, lucky us.

## How to find Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch, and where to park

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is an 8-minute walk from Sinyongsan Station Exit 6, so accessibility is really good haha. But you do have to go down an alley — I just followed Naver Maps and it took me down some random back street, so I wandered around a bit.

There's no parking at Hyeonseonine itself, so you'll need a paid lot nearby. Bareum Planning parking lot, at the entrance of the same alley, is convenient since it's close by. Parking is ₩4,000 per hour.

## Inside Hyeonseonine: seating, kiosk and opening hours

Last order is at 10:40 PM, and the dining room closes at 11:59 PM. I think this is the latest-closing bunsik place I've ever seen, haha.

![Waiting seats set up in front of Hyeonseonine](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyunseonine-yongsan-combo-set-visit/hyunseonine-yongsan-combo-set-visit-02-1caaf-900.webp)

True to its reputation as a place with waits, there was even waiting seating set up in front of the restaurant.

![CatchTable waitlist kiosk and order kiosk at the entrance](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyunseonine-yongsan-combo-set-visit/hyunseonine-yongsan-combo-set-visit-03-odris-900.webp)

Right when you walk in, you see the CatchTable waitlist and the order kiosk. There was no wait when we visited, so we went straight in and grabbed a seat. The rule at Hyeonseonine is you order at the kiosk yourself, so grab your seat first, then order!

![Boxed leftovers from the combo set after a Haebangchon walk, Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyunseonine-yongsan-combo-set-visit/hyunseonine-yongsan-combo-set-visit-04-10oe3-900.webp)

Inside, the place was already packed with people. There were quite a lot of seats, and the space itself isn't small either!

You order at the kiosk after being seated. Pickled radish, tableware and so on are all self-serve. Water is self-serve too, from the water purifier near the counter.

## What comes in the Hyeonseon Combo Set at Hyeonseonine

![Small dishes of salt and soy sauce with self-serve bar items](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyunseonine-yongsan-combo-set-visit/hyunseonine-yongsan-combo-set-visit-06-1rjak-900.webp)

Hyeonseonine also sells alcohol! That explains why a bunsik place stays open so late, haha.

The self-serve bar has pickled radish, soy sauce, salt, tableware, even aprons — everything you might need is right there. Nice touch prepping the salt for sundae and the soy sauce for dipping fritters and fish cakes ahead of time, haha.

Leave a review at Hyeonseonine and you get a free slushie or a tteokbokki size-up. Bunsik and a slushie? Haha, what a combo!

The Hyeonseon Combo Set we ordered has arrived! Just looking at it, the portion is huge and generous — enough for at least three people, minimum. Tteokbokki, Hyeonseonine's signature dish, plus mini gimbap, sundae (blood sausage), fish cake and assorted fritters — a full bunsik sampler with nothing missing, haha.

It's a visual that fills you up just looking at it, haha. They bring it all out heaped on a big tray, and the generous sight alone made me feel satisfied.

### Fish cake skewers and assorted fritters at Hyeonseonine

The fish cake skewers come as a set of 3, and the fish cake pieces are huge — one skewer alone fills your fish cake quota, haha. The broth is rich and refreshing, so good... A bite of tteokbokki, a bite of sundae, then a sip of the fish cake broth — it felt like it helped everything settle nicely, haha.

Best fritters I've had recently! Insanely crispy, and the savory flavor was top-notch too. My favorites, gimmari (fried seaweed roll) and fried squid, need no explanation, and even the vegetable fritter I don't usually eat was amazing dipped in the tteokbokki sauce — that crispy texture, honestly the best..!

### How the tteokbokki at Hyeonseonine tastes

The tteokbokki I was most curious about! As a famous Yongsan tteokbokki spot, my expectations were highest, and how should I put it... a real, genuine old-school flavor that stirs up nostalgia..! Sweetness and spiciness blended in just the right ratio, and it reminded me of the tent-stall tteokbokki I used to buy all the time as a kid.

These days, bold, intense tteokbokki is the trend, so after eating a lot of that, tasting this classic flavor again made me keep reaching for more — like a naengmyeon (cold noodles) kind of appeal, haha. Not that it's weak or bland seasoning-wise — it's just a flavor your hand reaches for naturally, without even thinking. I understood why it's so popular the moment I took a bite.

### Mini gimbap and chewy sundae in the combo set

Gimbap (seaweed rice roll) and sundae (blood sausage) are usually chosen as the perfect pairing for spicy tteokbokki, but at Hyeonseonine, the sundae and gimbap hold their own against the main dish. Especially the sesame oil aroma of the gimbap — it's beyond savory, practically explosive... just the smell makes you drool, haha. I didn't have high expectations for this item, but the aroma alone already won me over. It's just simple mini gimbap, but packed tight with flavor, so it wasn't a minor side at all.

The sundae was also really well-seasoned, chewy chapsundae! Yeah, bunsik-restaurant chapsundae is definitely my type, haha. I usually prefer it classic, dipped in salt, but dipping it in the flavorful tteokbokki sauce made it even better.

## Why we chose the combo set over instant tteokbokki

Hyeonseonine's combo set nails both portion and flavor! It's more famous for its instant tteokbokki, but the classic, tent-stall style combo set is really appealing too. Hyeonseonine actually started as a street tent stall back in 2004, and apparently, because it got so popular, the restaurant was built right at that same spot and has kept going there ever since..! Which made me think — of course the classic is the best, haha.

![Gimmari and fried squid among the assorted fritters](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyunseonine-yongsan-combo-set-visit/hyunseonine-yongsan-combo-set-visit-15-1jwhn-900.webp)

![Crispy gimmari dipped in tteokbokki sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyunseonine-yongsan-combo-set-visit/hyunseonine-yongsan-combo-set-visit-16-fmtm2-900.webp)

The gimmari was seriously so good.. Even dipped in the tteokbokki sauce, that crispy fried texture didn't disappear.

The fish cake skewer also had a small tteokbokki rice cake threaded on it, so we got to enjoy a mini version of the fish-cake-in-broth style too, haha. The broth is so tasty that even the rice cake soaked up the flavor beautifully.

The gimbap looks small but it's packed inside, haha. This one too, dunked right into the tteokbokki sauce.

Dip the sundae in the salt dish, dip the fish cake in the soy sauce dish. You can't skip out on the classic, basic flavors either, haha.

Delivery orders kept coming in the whole time we were eating. Seeing them pile up nonstop made me think — yeah, a real hit restaurant is a real hit restaurant, haha.

## Too much food for two: boxing up the leftovers

Even after eating as much as we could, the combo set was still too much for the two of us, haha. In the end I told the owner we had leftovers, and they packed it up so neatly it looked almost brand new. All the staff were kind and the service was great too, so it was a meal that left me feeling good, not just well-fed.

I usually avoid places with long waits, but Hyeonseonine is the kind of place I'd happily wait for again. Next time I'll have to try the instant tteokbokki, haha. If you're looking for solid, satisfying bunsik in Yongridan-gil, I definitely recommend giving Hyeonseonine a visit!
