## Why we picked a jjukkumi restaurant in Baekseok-dong, Cheonan

My eldest, who lives alone in Cheonan, just moved into a new place. I wanted to see how the new apartment looked and check if she needed anything, so I went to visit.

After catching up with her and looking around the apartment, lunchtime had quietly slipped by. Wanting a warm, filling meal, I searched for a well-known jjukkumi spot near Baekseok-dong, Cheonan and headed over. It wasn't far from my eldest's place, and the parking lot was spacious, which made things easy.

The place I found was Bulnaneun Jjukkumi Main Branch. In front of the store there was a banner with the signature menu and descriptions, so I could get a quick look at what was on offer before even going in.

From spicy jjukkumi stir-fry to pot-rice sets and pork cutlet that kids love, the menu was varied enough that I figured my youngest and I could eat well together.

Once inside, Bulnaneun Jjukkumi Main Branch turned out to be bigger than I expected. There were plenty of tables even toward the back, and the overall look was clean and tidy.

The seats weren't crammed together either, so it was comfortable to chat while eating. It seemed like a good spot for a family visit or a group lunch — the kind of jjukkumi place in Baekseok-dong, Cheonan worth remembering when looking for somewhere to eat near my eldest's apartment.

Ordering is done from your seat using the tablet at the table. Looking through the menu photos and options, I saw the spice level was adjustable — in four stages, no less. Since we could order just by tapping through the tablet without calling a server, my eldest and I took our time picking.

I can handle spicy food fine, but my eldest is sensitive to spice, so she picked the milder level, and I also ordered pork cutlet for my youngest.

## Basic banchan and chilled seaweed soup

Once we finished ordering, the basic banchan arrived first. Bean sprouts, spicy radish salad, a side salad, and vegetables to mix in with the jjukkumi stir-fry — none of the seasoning was overly strong.

The cold seaweed soup (miyeok naengguk) was clean and refreshing, and I kept reaching for it. Taking a spoonful between bites of spicy food cleared my palate so I could keep eating comfortably.

## The pork cutlet for kids at Bulnaneun Jjukkumi

My youngest's pork cutlet made its appearance, fried to a nice golden brown. Cut into bite-size pieces and dipped in sauce, it was crispy outside and tender inside.

I figured a bite of pork cutlet in between spicy bites would be nice, so I snuck one — and got a death glare from my youngest, haha. There was salad served alongside too, good for alternating bites.

## What does the milder jjukkumi stir-fry taste like?

After a bit, the main dish we'd been waiting for arrived. The milder-spice jjukkumi we ordered — a well-known dish around Baekseok-dong, Cheonan — had plump octopus and cabbage evenly coated in rich sauce. A generous sprinkle of sesame seeds on top made it look appetizing on its own.

Rather than being straight-up spicy, it was sweet and savory first, with the heat building slowly afterward. The subtle smoky char flavor paired well with the sauce.

With the basic banchan set alongside it, the table looked even more generous. I'd been up and moving since morning checking out the new apartment, so I was hungry, and being able to alternate between the spicy dish and crispy pork cutlet was satisfying. Sitting across from my eldest, slowly talking about the new place, made the day feel a little more relaxed after all the running around.

## The pot-rice set and its scorched-rice finish

The warm pot-rice that came with the set. Freshly cooked rice always pairs so well with spicy stir-fries. We chose the set menu, and I think that was the right call.

Opening the lid, the rice was fluffy and well cooked. After scooping out what we wanted to eat, water was poured into the pot and the lid closed again. While we ate, the remaining rice softened and formed a nutty scorched rice (nurungji) to finish with. Going from pot-rice to nurungji made for a properly filling meal.

Picking up a piece of jjukkumi with my chopsticks, the flesh looked plump and appetizing. It wasn't chewy in a tough way but had a springy, tender bite. The sauce clung evenly to the octopus rather than sitting separately, and with every chew the spicy, springy texture plus the smoky char flavor made it delicious.

The two of us piled a generous amount of the spicy jjukkumi stir-fry onto the fluffy pot-rice. Eating it with warm rice softened the intensity of the sauce and made it feel like a properly filling meal.
