## A great atmosphere for skewers and a drink in Bongmyeong-dong

While looking for somewhere in Bongmyeong-dong where I could have a casual drink with tasty bar snacks, I visited Kkojip (꼬집), which is known for its skewers!

As soon as I walked in, I loved how much more atmospheric the place was than I had expected! It had a relaxed mood that was perfect for drinks, so it would be nice with friends or for spending time chatting casually. Rather than being overly loud or intimidating, it felt like a place where you could comfortably sit down and enjoy drinks and snacks!

Looking over the menu, there was everything from assorted skewers to more filling dishes such as charcoal-grilled chicken bulgogi and potato pancakes. I had thought it specialized only in skewers, but there were surprisingly many choices, which was nice because you could order according to your drink or whatever you felt like eating that day!

The complimentary snacks came first: pickled radish for chicken, corn salad, and some easy-to-pick-at crackers. It was a nice light spread while waiting for the mains, and perfect for getting started with a drink!

I also ordered Kelly draft beer and Coca-Cola. Just thinking about having a cold draft beer with the skewers, I could already tell at the time of ordering that they would go so well together!

## Iced yellow peaches, a great first snack

The first snack to arrive was iced yellow peaches. The peaches were served nice and cold, and each bite felt sweet and refreshing, cleansing the palate. When you're drinking, there are moments when you crave something sweet, and this was an easy snack to pick at then!

I also loved that it came with tomatoes! If it had only been peaches, the sweetness might have continued on and on, but the tomatoes added a different texture and flavor here and there, so the combination worked well. Above all, the iced peaches weren't too heavy, making them great to start with. In the end, I kept picking one up after another while sitting there... and finished them much faster than expected.

## Ttukbaegi kimchi fried rice topped with egg and cheese

I'm the kind of person who finds it hard to pass up fried rice when a bar has it, so I ordered the ttukbaegi kimchi fried rice too! Because it came in a ttukbaegi, a Korean earthenware pot, it stayed warm, and it looked filling just at a glance. It was topped with egg and cheese, too. The egg and cheese brought out an extra nutty richness in the classic kimchi fried rice!

The spicy, savory flavor of kimchi and the soft flavor of cheese seemed to make up for what the other lacked! When mixed with the egg, it became even nuttier, and bite after bite was quietly addictive. If you only eat skewers, the snacks can keep leaning toward meat, but adding kimchi fried rice in the middle made the spread feel much more plentiful. It works as a drinking snack, but I think it would be good to order if you're having one of those days when you need a properly filling meal, too!

## Charcoal skewers with a variety of ingredients

The skewers I'd been waiting for all arrived at once! I ordered the special chicken skewer, shrimp skewer, tomato bacon skewer, and chicken-heart skewer, and having so many kinds together made the table look wonderfully abundant. Each skewer had different ingredients, so it was fun choosing them one by one!

There was also a house-made sauce on the side. It had a lightly sharp, mustard-like flavor, and dipping the skewers in it helped cut through the richness!

### Special chicken skewers with grilled scallions

The special chicken skewers didn't just have chicken on them—there were grilled scallions in between, too! Having a piece of chicken with the grilled scallion, the gentle aroma from the scallion went beautifully with the chicken. The smoky chicken and the characteristic subtle sweetness of grilled scallion made it feel much more substantial than an ordinary chicken skewer. It was delicious with a little sauce, but personally, my favorite combination was the grilled scallion and chicken together!

### The bouncy shrimp skewers were my favorite

The shrimp skewers were the tastiest thing I had that day! The shrimp retained their bouncy texture, so you could really feel it when you bit in, and their mild flavor came through nicely too. I loved getting a mouthful of plump shrimp meat with every bite.

Dipped lightly in the house-made sauce, the shrimp's mild flavor took on the sauce's sharp kick for another way to enjoy it. They were truly great with beer, too. A bite of salty yet mild shrimp followed by cold draft beer refreshed the palate, making it a combination I kept reaching for!

The tomato bacon skewers went together better than I expected, too! Rather than eating tomato and bacon separately, grilling them together made their flavors blend naturally. As the tomato softened, a subtle sweetness came through, joined by bacon's salty, nutty flavor, and it was a really nice pairing. Bacon alone could have felt a bit heavy, but the tomato added freshness in the middle, making it less so. This dish made me realize just how well warm tomato and bacon work together!

### Chicken-heart skewers with a nostalgic flavor

The chicken-heart skewers felt familiar as soon as I tried them! Their distinctively chewy yet mild texture gave them a nostalgic flavor that reminded me of skewers I had eaten since childhood. They were salty, with a nutty flavor that emerged the more I chewed, making them great with beer. When you eat several types of skewers, it's fun to compare each ingredient's texture, and the chicken hearts definitely had a springiness unlike the other chicken skewers!

### Bite-sized pork jowl skewers

Finally, I tried the pork jowl skewers too! Pork jowl makes you expect a tender texture and its distinctive nutty richness, but having it as a skewer felt different again. The meat was tender but had just the right amount of bounce when chewed, so the texture was lovely. It wasn't dry at all and had a satisfying chew, making me take my time with each piece. They were bite-sized, so they were easy to eat and nice to alternate with the other dishes!

## For a casual drink or a filling meal

When looking for somewhere for an evening drink in Bongmyeong-dong, you want a place with atmosphere as well as a variety of snacks, and Kkojip was good in that respect! It would be great to have just a few skewers with a casual beer, or to order several dishes and enjoy a filling meal. With a wide selection of drinks and snacks, it was easy to choose according to my mood that day, and it was also a nice place to sit comfortably, chat, and spend time. If you're looking for an atmospheric bar in Bongmyeong-dong and want to enjoy skewers properly too, I think Kkojip is worth stopping by at least once!
