## In short

Hanjan Meokgo Gajami is a wild flatfish sashimi restaurant on Tonghak-ro in Pyeongni-dong, Seo-gu, Daegu. Although Hanjan Meokgo Gajami specialises in sekkoshi (bone-in sliced sashimi), the kitchen deboned a small order of wild chamgajami (marbled sole) for two friends, and soy-marinated crab, grilled saury and even macaroni salad filled the table before the sashimi arrived. With soju and beer at 4,000 won, Hanjan Meokgo Gajami is a genuine neighbourhood local favourite.

My friend and I were craving good sashimi for the first time in a while, so we headed to a local sashimi restaurant. Turns out it's one of those spots that people in the know in Seo-gu, Daegu all talk about. The name itself is adorable: Hanjan Meokgo Gajami (한잔먹고 가자미, roughly "have a drink and flatfish").

Flatfish sashimi is the main event, but they also serve mulhoe, hoedeopbap, and a set meal with grilled flatfish. After a lot of deliberation, we settled on the wild chamgajami sashimi, small size.

Even before we walked in, the fish tanks looked spotless and well-maintained. It was reassuring — you could tell the owner really cares about hygiene.

## Can you order boneless sashimi at a sekkoshi specialist?

Hanjan Meokgo Gajami is famous among Pyeongni-dong sashimi restaurants for its sekkoshi (bone-in sliced sashimi). But neither my friend nor I do well with bones, so we cautiously asked if it could be made boneless. The owner said yes without any hesitation, which we really appreciated.

On top of that, soju and beer are still ₩4,000 here — surprising these days when most places charge over ₩5,000.

Besides chamgajami, they also had other good options like dodari (fluke). Just seeing the word "wild" (자연산) written on the wall gave me a comforting feeling. Once we ordered, the table quickly filled up with tasty banchan (side dishes). We had a savory, light gajami miyeokguk (flatfish seaweed soup) and godong (whelk) that was fun to suck out of the shell — hadn't had that in ages.

I was pleasantly surprised to see boiled green peas, the kind you'd only occasionally spot at a Japanese izakaya.

They also gave us a big bowl of julienned vegetables — mix these with chojang (vinegared chili paste) and roasted soybean powder and it's genuinely delicious.

My friend and I finished off that whole bowl of vegetables without leaving a single piece. The wrapping greens were super fresh too — being right next to the market clearly means the ingredients are all fresh.

## The banchan parade at Hanjan Meokgo Gajami: soy crab, grilled saury and more

The banchan at Hanjan Meokgo Gajami is so generous you could be full before the sashimi even arrives. The baek-kimchi (white kimchi), perfect alongside the raw fish, deserves a mention too.

The soy-marinated crab (ganjang-gejang) was so good I wanted to take some home. The crabs are small, but not salty or fishy at all — genuinely delicious! My friend claims she doesn't like ganjang-gejang because of the fishiness, but while I was eating one piece, she finished off the rest. Later we found out they also sell it separately in small containers, and we both wanted to buy some, but that day's stock was only enough for the banchan and it was sold out. Pretty disappointing, but we're saving it for next time.

There was also a generous serving of crunchy pickled gungchae (stem lettuce), braised potatoes, and potato salad. I was already getting embarrassingly full before the sashimi even showed up. Fluffy steamed egg and nutty macaroni made their appearance too, without fail.

Most sashimi restaurants give you corn as a side, but here they oddly give macaroni instead. It's nutty and unusual enough that I kept reaching for more.

And the grilled saury, which I hadn't had in forever, was crispy outside and tender inside. It was so good I picked the bones completely clean.

## Is a small marbled sole order enough for two people?

Finally, the star of the show arrived: the chamgajami sashimi. At first, the small plate size made me worry the portion might be small.

But by the time we were about two-thirds through, we were already about to burst. They skipped the usual filler of shredded radish or cheonsachae (thin jelly noodles) and just piled the plate full of sashimi — a genuinely satisfying portion. The texture was tender yet springy, absolutely excellent.

We dipped it in chojang, wrapped it in fresh greens for another bite, and it was equally amazing dipped in wasabi soy sauce.

We were stuffed, but I knew I'd regret leaving anything, so I cleaned off the very last piece. Haha.

## Why Pyeongni-dong regulars call Hanjan Meokgo Gajami the real deal

The owner kindly explained the best way to eat everything, which made the whole meal even more enjoyable. My friend kept saying she'd definitely bring her parents back since it's close to home.

As we ate, I noticed most of the surrounding tables were full of neighborhood elders. There's a rule of thumb that any restaurant packed with local elders is guaranteed to be legit — and this place fit that description perfectly.

I saw the table next to us eating mulhoe and hoedeopbap and it looked so good. I'll definitely come back for the cold mulhoe next time. If you're looking for a sashimi restaurant with generous banchan and fresh chamgajami sashimi in Seo-gu or Pyeongni-dong, make sure to have a delicious time at Hanjan Meokgo Gajami.
