## In short

Sakai is a newly opened Japanese restaurant near Seolleung Station in Gangnam, Seoul, where diners order sushi piece by piece. This dinner at Sakai brought sea bream, flounder, salmon, sweet shrimp, egg and squid nigiri alongside Sapporo beer, plus 4 extra pieces of sea bream, and the sweet shrimp nigiri topped with egg yolk was the clear favourite. Both the fun of choosing each piece and the quality of the sushi made the evening worth repeating.

Sakai is a newly opened sushi restaurant near Seolleung Station. Bottom line up front: there's real fun in picking exactly which sushi you want, and the quality was great too — I was satisfied! Especially the sweet shrimp nigiri I had that day — I'm definitely ordering that again!

## What is Sakai near Seolleung Station like inside?

Sakai feels like a great spot for a slow dinner with a drink in the evening. And personally, what caught my eye was how many staff there were.

Given the size of the place, there were quite a lot of people working, including the chef, which somehow made it feel even more professional haha. Watching everyone move busily in the open space, I got the sense I'd walked into a well-run Japanese restaurant.

## How ordering sushi piece by piece works at Sakai

At Sakai you can order a variety of sushi, whatever you're craving. There was so much we wanted that after some deliberation, we went with sea bream, flounder, salmon, sweet shrimp, egg, and squid.

Ordered Sapporo beer for the first time in a while, and the glass is so cute haha.

We ordered a good range from white fish to salmon, shrimp, and squid, and comparing them piece by piece was really fun. I'd read reviews saying the sushi takes a while to come out, but it came out faster than expected! Overall the ingredient quality was quite good, and I think we ended up with a pretty great combination.

You can tell just by looking that it's glossy and beautiful — the visuals are on point. The sea bream, flounder, and salmon all came out sliced thick, with vivid color, and you could tell they were fresh just by looking.

Sakai's sushi rice comes pre-seasoned with soy sauce, so there's no need to dip it separately.

The egg nigiri has a soft, fluffy texture with a subtle sweetness, which adds a nice touch of charm among the fish nigiri. It's cheap too, so I'd definitely recommend trying one or two.

## Sakai's must-order: sweet shrimp nigiri with egg yolk

The overwhelming pick of the day was the sweet shrimp. This was genuinely delicious. The bouncy yet tender texture unique to sweet shrimp really came through when I took a bite. Topped with egg yolk, it felt even richer in flavor.

The texture is seriously insane. It's priced around ₩5,000, which might feel a bit steep for a single piece of sushi. But once you eat it... you know you'll have to order it again next time haha.

Deliberated over what to eat more of, and the final pick was sea bream! We ordered 4 more pieces of the sea bream, which had a light yet chewy texture we loved.

A sip of cold beer with a piece of sushi was such a great combination. Picking out the sushi I love at a nice-vibe Japanese restaurant and having a beer alongside it made an ordinary evening feel pretty special.
