## In short

Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is a takeout-only bakery in Yeonnam-dong, a 466m walk from Exit 3 of Hongik Univ. Station in Seodaemun, Seoul. The checkout line was full of foreign customers front and back, and after trying samples the staff cut on the spot, the writer picked maple bread, sweet potato bread, cappuccino bread and sweet pumpkin ciabatta. At Mandong Jegwa the nutty flavour and aroma of the bread itself mattered more than the fillings, making it one bakery stop that did not disappoint.

## Why is there a queue at Mandong Jegwa, a Yeonnam-dong bakery?

There are plenty of bakery cafés around Hongdae in Yeonnam-dong, but this place has so many foreign customers alongside Korean ones that you actually queue up to pay — welcome to the bakery pilgrimage stop, "Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch"!

## Takeout only, bread only: how small is the Mandong Jegwa shop?

Even before stepping inside Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch, foreigners at the entrance were already walking out with bread, snapping photos to prove they'd been there — a true bakery pilgrimage spot!! It's known as a Yeonnam-dong bakery and Hongdae favorite (and really, they only sell bread), so Korean customers keep streaming in nonstop too. The actual bread display space is smaller than it looks from outside, and everything runs strictly as takeout, to go — that's Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch!

![Bread neatly arranged on display at Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/mandong-bakery-yeonnam-takeout-breads/mandong-bakery-yeonnam-takeout-breads-06-y3yd1-900.webp)

Bread lined up neatly on display... I'm a total bread lover, so the moment I saw so many varieties I got a little excited. Haha, I was so thrilled and nervous about what to choose...

When I was little, the man who lived downstairs ran a natural-yeast bakery. He'd give me bread and say I was cute, and when there was extra bread left over he'd bring me more, so as an elementary schooler I basically lived on bread. That bakery uncle's natural-yeast bread became a huge hit and he ended up building his own building and moving away... (I hope he's doing well and staying healthy~~)

## Fresh-cut samples at Mandong Jegwa — awkward when it's crowded

One new thing: a staff member at Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch cut bread fresh on the spot to offer as samples. Maybe pre-cut pieces on a plate look bad or dry out, so they cut it fresh instead? They were kind about it, but with the shop packed full of customers and barely room to move, having samples offered this way felt a bit awkward. Still, every single bread I tried for the first time was delicious. Maybe it's a strategy to turn the memory of the crowd into a memory of good taste?

Foreign customers filled the line in front of and behind me, making me wonder just how far this Yeonnam-dong bakery/Hongdae favorite reputation had spread around the world. Even walking out after paying, foreigners were everywhere~~ The staff ringing up orders at Mandong Jegwa probably speak more English than Korean!!

I'd been waiting in line to take a photo here, and just then no one was around, so I got my own shot too! Haha

## Which breads to pick after the samples at Mandong Jegwa

At Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch, the Yeonnam-dong bakery and Hongdae favorite, these are the breads I tried as samples and picked on the recommendation of a young guy in his 20s working there: maple, sweet potato bread, cappuccino bread, and sweet pumpkin ciabatta (in the same order as the photo).

### Sweet potato bread: the flour and the baking do the work

Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam's sweet potato bread is packed with sweet potato and has a lovely sweetness, but what stood out most was how good the bread itself tasted — either the flour was excellent or the baking technique was top-notch. The nutty flavor and aroma of the bread hit my nose and kept me eating without stopping. The sweet soboro-like crumble on top and the slight crunchy texture brought out the bread's flavor and made it feel like a premium, delicious loaf.

### Sweet pumpkin ciabatta: enough to share between two

Just picking up this one loaf, the sweet pumpkin ciabatta felt heavy and substantial. It had a bit of a pizza-like vibe, with cream cheese, sweet pumpkin, and vegetables all mixed in with the bread — eating the whole thing on my own left me pretty full. For travelers getting peckish, splitting one sweet pumpkin ciabatta between two people with some coffee, and holding out until the next meal, sounds like a good plan.

## Is Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch worth the trip to Yeonnam-dong?

Among all the bakery-pilgrimage spots I've tried, Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is one that didn't disappoint me. They bring out the flavor not just through fillings but through the flour and bread itself, so calling it a Yeonnam-dong bakery and Hongdae favorite isn't an exaggeration at all!! If you're ever in Yeonnam-dong, Hongik University, or Changcheon-dong, I recommend stopping by at least once to try the bread at Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch~
