A few days ago my partner and I took a day trip to Gyeongju, and we stopped by Dongyang Baekban, known as a Korean food spot on Hwangridan-gil. The restaurant has a cozy, old-fashioned atmosphere and serves neat, well-put-together Korean dishes, so I wanted to introduce it as a great pick for a Gyeongju date course or a family dinner!

Located on Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju, Dongyang Baekban is a Korean restaurant that uses seasonal ingredients for healthy home-style cooking. Turns out Gyeongju is the main branch, with other locations in department stores and Starfield Myeongji, which made me even more curious about the taste!

It's just one block in from the main Hwangridan-gil street, so it's quiet, and since it's a renovated old house turned into a restaurant with a lot of character, it felt even more welcoming.

## Two tables per room: how quiet is the old-house setting?

Walking through the small courtyard, each room has just two tables, making it a great spot for a quiet meal.

It felt like stepping into an old grandmother's house, but the space was decorated with charming little objects and warm lighting throughout, so just sitting there made me feel completely at ease.

Rather than an elaborately built hanok, this felt like a place where you could sit, talk, and eat comfortably, which I liked even more.

What's unusual here is that instead of plain rice, you can order caviar rice, pollack roe rice, cheongyang chili rice, gamtae (seaweed) rice, yukhoe rice, egg rice, or gondre rice depending on your taste — I loved that option!

There were also various side dishes like Korean beef mulhoe, perilla oil yukjeon, grilled fish, and seasoned crab. Since it was dinner time, we went with the hearty five-color vegetable jjimdak along with a bowl of rice and a pollack roe rice bowl.

## Five-color vegetable jjimdak and pollack roe rice: how spicy?

Before the jjimdak arrived, the rice and side dishes came out first — four kinds of Korean side dishes plus seaweed flakes to mix into the jjimdak.

The pollack roe rice bowl was piled high with chopped scallions and pollack roe on top of the rice — just mixing it together gave it a real depth of savory flavor.

The five-color vegetable jjimdak came out already partially cooked, so it was easy to just simmer it down a bit more to your taste. From the photos I'd expected a sweet soy-based jjimdak loaded with vegetables, but the sauce was actually slightly spicy — and I liked that even better.

The jjimdak was made with boneless chicken, so you could just scoop it up with the vegetables — really easy to eat, and the seasoning had soaked deeply into the meat, making it perfect with rice. The vegetables included lotus root, corn, potato, onion, and broccoli, among many others — my partner and I both left the meal really satisfied.

No jjimdak is complete without glass noodles, and this one was packed with well-seasoned glass noodles and dumpling dough bits (sujebi) — it tasted like a rich dakdoritang.

Eating the jjimdak together with rice was already great, but mixing about half of it with seaweed flakes, the jjimdak sauce, and rice made it a real delicacy haha. The seasoning itself was so good that it also worked really well as a warm side dish for drinks.
